Watch & Learn: SEKIREI #1

Give me a T! Give me an A! What's that spell?! FAN SERVICE!!!

Carefully targeted to your demographic's expected desires.
Carefully targeted to your demographic's expected desires.

I haven’t gotten on the TWILIGHT hate train, myself. Sure, the portions I’ve caught while flipping through channels on cable have looked as utterly ridiculous as I've been told to expect, but I think it’s unfair to rag on something so clearly unintended for your particular “demo.” Lord knows, I’ve enjoyed plenty of “guy movies,” metal and pro wrestling that nobody without a Y chromosome will ever be expected to enjoy. I’m also not somebody who sees much use in lavishing the amount of effort the Twi-Haters use in voicing their disapproval of the Twi-Hards. You only get so much so much leisure time in a week, why not fixate it entirely on things that you, you know, you enjoy?

Then again, I haven’t been ever forced to marathon the movies by a girlfriend. That might change my attitude considerably...

All the same, I won’t hesitate to come down on this SEKIREI thing because, unlike TWILIGHT, its attempts at fantasy are, indeed, "targeted at my demo." Or at least one I’ve been a part of. Look, there’s a whole chunk of fantasy that’s dedicated to fulfilling the fantasies of young, lonely, often geeky guys. You’ll have a kid fretting about how things aren’t going his way - - especially on the ladies side - - and then… POOF! A gorgeous genie girl literally falls into his life and turns his world upside down because she’s so inexplicably infatuated with him.

I suppose it’s the other side of the kind of wish that TWILIGHT grabs at. There’s nothing fundamentally wrong with it but, at least something like WEIRD SCIENCE has some plot and some humor so it isn’t just about that sex fantasy. SEKIREI has almost nothing else going for it except big boobies (and at least you can see the nipples because it’s an adult show!) I think the ire about the "manic pixie dream girl" is unwarranted a lot of the time but, good lord, this girl's otherworldly mix of naive innocence and sexual aggression is impossible to believe.

I'll leave it to somebody smarter to put it in some big essay about gender roles in pop culture. Myself, I just thought it was dumb.

Watch this episode "Sekirei" below and decide for yourself.

I'll pass. Not a big fan of fanservice.

candylanceon Oct. 22, 2011 at 8:17 a.m.

It's a good anime series. I enjoyed watching it.

Odd the Weird Science nod Tom because In anime many would have sprained thumbs .This shows like pokemon ecchi but harem -ish .More comedy than not. Those who dont like fan service should just say they dont like this kind of fan service.Because odds are some type of fan service they have watched an liked. After all anime is a mine field of boob jokes an nose bleeds.

This show tends to take the whole fanservice thing to the extreme. It does almost what Heaven's Lost Property does, but in a more extreme manor (especially with the breasts part, since HLP focused equally on breasts and Tomoki's panty obsession). I personally feel that once you get past the extreme amounts of fanservice in Sekirei, that it makes for a somewhat enjoyable show.

Maybe since I read ecchi/harem mangas and watch ecchi/harem-themed anime series on a regular basis that I have become used to the usual fanservice. I would not recommend this series to people who dislike a abundance of fanservice in their anime shows.

I'm surprised you got past the intro to this one

CapeBarneson Oct. 22, 2011 at 12:58 p.m.

I'll say this: there are worse harem/ecchi shows out there.

Catolfon Oct. 22, 2011 at 1:28 p.m.

I rather liked the few episodes I saw of Sekirei, another Ecchi I liked was Ladies vs Butlers as well... and my disturbing relationship with Seikon no Qwaser. hurhurhur~

I saw a fight scene from this and thought it was cool but then I read the story and it seemed like yet another big titty girl and high school kid partner up for super powers type of show. I realized then that just watching fight animation clips on YouTube would probably be more entertaining then forcing myself to sit down for 10+ 24 minute episodes.

Pathetic

@Tom_Pinchuk: Sekirei are essentially "Pokemon with tits." That's all you really need to know about this series. It only appeals to people like this guy:

(I think the world just got a little more queer)

The only thing good about this series was the sparring sequence ep 4 at 6:00...and it last only 4 seconds

asian_prideon Oct. 22, 2011 at 8:40 p.m.

Tom, I really hope this is the first and last episode you see of this fucking show. Ugh.

Despite the fan service, I had fun watching this show.

sotyfan16on Oct. 23, 2011 at 2:11 a.m.

This is another show I love watching. And apparently, another one that everyone hates for the sake of hating harems. Grow some balls people!

Again, Tom, I have to go against all the shit you're talking. You're being such a downer on this show and continue to not even give a chance to the series you didn't even show the opportunity to. I am so disappointed in those commenting on this article. People think that just because the guy immediately seems like a loser and the girls have big tits that the show is the same old harem deal.

You fuckers couldn't have been more wrong. If you just get past the showing of the other shows then you will see big-breasted girls working on modesty, sharing, kindness, etc. You will also see girls who wonder the effect of 'the game' on humans and see some people making good of the world. Otherwise, this world doesn't stand a chance in the polar ice caps compared to the weak outside cross around those in need of warmth and shelter.

The story of Sekirei is entertaining and enjoyable. Stories otherwise provide false witness.

Been watching this on Netflix. Yeah, obviously theres tons of fanservice but beyond that its sort of a enjoyable show especially if your watching it via a streaming service like netflix and don't pay 30$ for the damn bluray.

I will argue that the original manga does a better job of showing this, but the series does a decent job of it and is enjoyable to me nonetheless. I haven't seen the second season yet, however, so I can't say if it improves or not in this regard. But this W&L has reminded me I need to actually sit down and watch the second season now...

sotyfan16on Oct. 23, 2011 at 3:10 a.m.

@TopographicOcean:

The second season tones down on the fanservice a bit (not a lot but enough to notice) and picks up more in the story department. I'm working on reading the manga and I know there is more detail in it than the anime. I hope for a 3rd season that picks up even more of it because it is a rare sight nowadays for a harem series to have a good story and it's a shame so many just throw them by the wayside.

PenguinDuston Oct. 23, 2011 at 3:26 a.m.

Well a lot of "magical girlfriend" shows are about "POOF! A gorgeous genie girl..." It's a sub-genre to romantic comedies usually but can also be more action orientated such as Kurokami. I'm not sure what the very first one was, but one of the earliest was Urusei Yatsura by female manga author Rumiko Takahashi. In that one, hot alien girl, Lum lost an intergalactic competition to perpetually rejected Earthling, Ataru and fell for him thereafter. It's not logical but why bother with that? It's a ridiculous slapstick comedy that frequently drifts into folklore territory. Is it a male fantasy? Absolutely, just as I Dream of Jeanie, Splash, or anything with Summer Glau. Sekirei is like all of them but with some tournament and harem aspects added to the mix. I really enjoyed the series and season 2 is even better (and since it's a stickler for you, less fanservice). I believe it's actually one of the better from this subset of genres and I've seen my fair share.
