I look at a show like this and wonder if it’s stretching my suspension of disbelief farther than all the instances of mecha and mind control in CODE GEASS. Look, maybe a lot of you had different experiences in high school than I did, but having one hot girl aggressively volunteer to be your wing woman and push you, insistently, into a relationship with your crush would’ve been a situation tantamount to, I don’t know, finding a special tape that’d make you ace every single assignment without trying. Feasible? Perhaps. Desirable? Definitely. Likely? Nah.
Also, even though pretty boys get away with a lot of behavior that would leave others labeled as creepy, I can’t help but be amused over how nobody brings up how… voyeuristic it is for young master Makoto to have a spy picture of sweet Ms. Kotonoha set as the wall paper on his phone. Urban legend or no, you’d figure Sekai’s more likely response to seeing that would be “Oh, that’s kind-of weird.” Of course, she likes him, and that really explains away everything. I was going to say that a single girl with this much interest in the business of her single classmate (stress, not her friend) probably has a thing for him… but then the big twist at the end proved me right.
Incidentally, I actually found out some spoilers while looking for more information about this online (like that ever happens!) So… Makoto’s girl craziness leads him to become a sex addict? HILLARIOUS. This felt like a Japanese ARCHIE, but considering how the game it’s based on supposedly presents scenarios that always lead to erotic outcomes, I guess it’s the more gritty, realistic circumstance of Riverdale’s Japanese sister city.
SCHOOL DAYS answers my slight longing for a more down-to-Earth anime show to watch but… breaking it down, I find the lead guy in CLANNAD to be more appealing than this guy. Same amount of angst, but there’s a few more gimmicks thrown in to spice the ol’ interest. Also, there's less threat of skeevy sex addiction.
