Watch & Learn: PANTY & STOCKING #2

So ribald, so lewd, so salacious...

+5XP to the animator for putting a close-up of Stocking licking that frosty while they're talking about the poop demon from last episode.

You know, this didn’t make me laugh as much as I did for the first episode, but can’t get over how… surreal it is to see the format of something like TINY TOONS used to tackle such ribald topics. The first part ends with one of the girls servicing an entire football team (at least that’s what I inferred) and the second’s about the two of them scouring the globe to find and destroy every existing copy of a sex tape. Even if I wasn’t quite guffawing at each gag (this is another show that would surely play better with a dub,) I was still... awed by the madcap commitment to run hog wild with such salacious situations.

I was thinking about covering this for the week-and-a-half leading up until Comic Con. It’s a half-length series (although still, strangely, longer than [C] – CONTROL,) so it’d seem like it would fit neatly into the time frame. However, if MUSHI-SHI and its self-contained episodes didn’t make for good ongoing discussion in this column, then PANTY & STOCKING and its one-off short shorts would be even worse. I can easily picture each post being about how lewd, and yet charming, each episode... but in different words.

And, alas, I’m such a fan of Gainax brand of madcap. Actually, if there is some gristle to chew on, it’s in how I’m recognizing the specific M.O.’s of each anime production house the deeper I get into this. And I’m not just talking about the Gainax bounce. One of you lunatics described Gainax’s output as being like that of an art student prone to mood swings. I’m definitely seeing how that works: I can just picture some imaginary creative type’s temperamental pendulum swinging between the extremes of this and EVANGELION.

@tophat666: I'm tempted to delete that "first".

Anyways, will you be finishing this series Tom? CR just announced that they will be removing it from their catalog come Saturday and there's no telling when Funi will put it on Hulu.

That's terrible news, Tom needs to see this series through to the end!

@sickVisionz: Really?  I know I knock it for being "Powerpuff Girls Gone Wild", but I think people should still watch the series at least once through to see what Gainax did with that formula.  It shows that Gainax goes 100% in everything they do, from gigantic robots in space to "edgy" zombie shows.

Anyway, I always feel a bit sad whenever a series is taken off streaming sites.  I was especially surprised when I couldn't find Ergo Proxy on FUNimation's YT channel.
sickVisionz moderator on July 12, 2011 at 7 p.m.

It was supposed to be gone 30 days after the final episode aired, which was in 2010, so it's been on borrowed time for a while now. It sucks that it's gone but on a bright note, the reason that it's gone is because Funimation licensed it and plans on a physical release at some point in 2012.

Personally i can see this as a show that would be ruined by an english dub, if only because no one could replicate the voices properly.
Rexicon July 12, 2011 at 7:05 p.m.
while im disappointed you wont be finishing mushi shi, at least your watching this now.

Awesome!

My only knock is that my favorite character in this series doesn't appear until episode 6.

@eyz:

This is a crazy, wild, Effin' show that you might enjoy if you don't have a problem with a lot of graphic sex jokes.

Also, do you think Ethan would approve of one week bans for jackasses that post "first" in articles???

@sickVisionz:

Crap. I'm glad I watched my favorite episodes earlier today.

I'm trying to check FUNimation's official P&S website, but it's not wanting to load for me. I checked HULU, but they all say "Watch at Crunchyroll".

ug the spamers are back and you choose THIS show??  After having seen the first episode of steins gate and how good it was?  Do not expect a sensible ending here this is gainax after all.  This show puts on a top everything I don't like about Japanese humor.  Massivly juvenile (I don't like the juvenile movies here in America and the Japanese ones are worse), pointless, and random.  Not a show I have any interest in watching I may read about it though but no interest in watching this at all.
Daniel_Newton moderator on July 13, 2011 at 1:17 p.m.

@zaldar: Hey no need to bash Tom's anime choice, a bunch of us recommended it and the first episode caught his attention, and regardless of your personal opinion of it Panty & Stocking is a popular show.

I'd have to respectfully disagree with you there. I'm pretty sure a dub would ruin this show, especially when the characters swear loudly in bad English. That wouldn't be the same in a dub.

sickVisionz moderator on July 13, 2011 at 4:07 p.m.

@Newten: I don't know if it would ruin it but I think this would be a hard show to dub. It's a comedy so a lot of bad things about dubs (odd voices, strange speech patterns/writing to match lip movement, lack of ability to make a dramatic scene not laughable or over the top hokey) would probably be a benefit and add to the comedy value, I think this one would be hard to get right on a level of genuinely good voice acting. Especially if they pull talent exclusively from Funi's pool of voice actors.

I actually think a dub would be great, ALA Shin-Chan. A lot of the jokes would undoubtedly change, but a good dub and this show is tailor-made for adult swim.

bleh I have a right to say when I think a show is terrible and not worth a watch and learn (given the learn part I did think we were going for some sort of intellectual content here).  This show is silly and pointless and everything I dislike about Japanese comedy.  It is really only a step above bo bo bo bo bo.  Which is perhaps one of the stupidest shows of all time.
TopographicOceanon July 13, 2011 at 11:32 p.m.
After watching a few episodes of this show, and thoroughly enjoying them I might add, I felt this was a bit of a deliberate take on the often absurd humour of recent Western movies like the Hangover and such. I'm eager to check out more of this actually. If (when? is it already licensed?) it gets a Western release, I think it will be a purchase from what I've seen.
Daniel_Newton moderator on July 13, 2011 at 11:52 p.m.

@zaldar: Looks like Tom's covering Steins Gate as well, problem solved!

I really need to catch on this. Only partially watched the first ep. but really liked the few I saw.

There's still idiots posting "first"?? You need to set an example by banning 'em, at least for a short period of time.

@Newten:   YUP YUP me be happy!  Will leave you all to your crazy sex show now ;)

well of course they would change it up because theres too many people who dont want other people to watch a good show like this and use morals as an excuse to block it
