You know, this didn’t make me laugh as much as I did for the first episode, but can’t get over how… surreal it is to see the format of something like TINY TOONS used to tackle such ribald topics. The first part ends with one of the girls servicing an entire football team (at least that’s what I inferred) and the second’s about the two of them scouring the globe to find and destroy every existing copy of a sex tape. Even if I wasn’t quite guffawing at each gag (this is another show that would surely play better with a dub,) I was still... awed by the madcap commitment to run hog wild with such salacious situations.
I was thinking about covering this for the week-and-a-half leading up until Comic Con. It’s a half-length series (although still, strangely, longer than [C] – CONTROL,) so it’d seem like it would fit neatly into the time frame. However, if MUSHI-SHI and its self-contained episodes didn’t make for good ongoing discussion in this column, then PANTY & STOCKING and its one-off short shorts would be even worse. I can easily picture each post being about how lewd, and yet charming, each episode... but in different words.
And, alas, I’m such a fan of Gainax brand of madcap. Actually, if there is some gristle to chew on, it’s in how I’m recognizing the specific M.O.’s of each anime production house the deeper I get into this. And I’m not just talking about the Gainax bounce. One of you lunatics described Gainax’s output as being like that of an art student prone to mood swings. I’m definitely seeing how that works: I can just picture some imaginary creative type’s temperamental pendulum swinging between the extremes of this and EVANGELION.
