Watch & Learn: GUNSLINGER GIRL #1

I say no to little girls with automatic weapons.

Hey! You're not supposed to play with that!
Hey! You're not supposed to play with that!

“The girl has a mechanical body. However, she is still an adolescent child.”

Now, that is poetry, man!  Forget all about “His love is real, but he is not” or “Love never dies” because that right there is how you properly capture an audience’s attention with a tagline.

Sheesh… I try to keep an open mind when I’m watching these shows - -I  try to keep it all relative - - but I’m going to just going to come out and say that I definitely won’t be watching any more episodes of GUNSLINGER GIRL. Stellar animation notwithstanding, it's bad. I had enough trouble trying to get to the end of this first episode. I dislike it for the same reasons I ended up disliking REQUIEM FOR A PHANTOM: it’s serious unto the point of dull. Considering how both shows were international espionage thrillers about young, emotionally-blank girls who are incredibly deadly with realistically-rendered pistols and whoalso  happen do most of their killing while quiet Mediterranean music plays… I’m starting to suspect that this a clearly-defined sub-genre in anime. If it is, then I’ve identified one segment I’m deeply disinterested in. ==TEASER ==

Who knows what it says about our current pop cultural zeitgeist, but child assassins have been a pretty popular subject of late. KICK-ASS, HANNA, et cetera, et cetera. I don’t have any moral objections to the premise like Roger Ebert does, it just seems especially stupid when there isn’t even a little self-awareness or tongue in cheek. I’m not saying GUNSLINGER GIRL had to be a spoof, but it says something when the coolest part in the episode comes when the one goon tries to tip the cabinet on the girl and she just casually pushes it away. It definitely could’ve used more of those moments.

By the way, is it just me, or does the theme song like it was performed by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs?

Watch this episode "Fratello" below and decide for yourself.

im really sad you wont be watching any more Gunslinger Girl episodes. your loss.
this series is not about cybernetic girls who can kill you in a finch. thats just part of the setting.
this series is about girls, who know they are not normal, and never will be again, coping with the emotions of a preteen/teen girl. its more about the relation each have with their fratello. the action parts are just the cherry on top. you really should give this one a chance.

I'm glad you won't be watching more of this. I watched the first few episodes and it went nowhere for me. I also dislike the blank assassin subgenre because I feel unattached to the characters and I have motivation to neither like nor dislike them.

And then when they try to bum rush the viewer with a dark past or conflicted emotions as if I am supposed to suddenly care. I'm too far past that cliche.

Also, adolescent girls? I found it hard to take grown men getting beat by them seriously.

Is the entire series as depressing as the first episode?

I was hoping you would watch this so it would be easier for me to rewatch the first season and finally get to the OVAs and the second season. But I guess not. The animation is pretty good and I have no problem with the premise or story. However, when I watched the first season for the first time, I fell asleep a lot because things just kinda drug on and I got bored.

I'm also sad that you don't like Phantom. You didn't even get to the best episodes or the "Oh shit!" ending.

In hindsight Madhouse didn't do a good job.
It really feels like they couldn't imbue the girls with the innocence that they have in the Manga and second series.

I couldn't go beyond the first two or three episodes because of the wet works in this thing. It was just a little too much for me.

wow....I'm sad this is the kind of deep philosophical show that I like.  Also sad you will not be watching more of this.  From what I have heard and from this first episode this is a perfect show for watch and learn.  Ah well your loss, I will probably watch these.

why does that little girl have an AUG?

I was happy this was super serious to be quite honest. Most shows like this aren't of a serious nature so I felt it was refreshing. I didn't find it particularly tear jerking though. But I wouldn't say that's a bad thing.
