Watch & Learn: GUIN SAGA #1

Tekken’s King saves the Winter Brothers from Monty Python's Black Knights in Conan's Hyperborean age.

Yeah yeah... I&squot;m sure King is the copycat, here, but "Guin" still ain&squot;t exactly a manly name for a warrior. Even a Celt.

Well, trying this to watch this has given me a better appreciation for the streaming services I’ve taken for granted. Since there’s nothing wrong with my connection, I’ll chalk this episode’s spotty playback to the site hosting it. A lot of times, the audio would keep going even while the picture froze, and it was annoying enough I was seriously considering dropping this episode for the inconvenience.

I’ll give this show kudos for being unlike almost any other anime I’ve watched up until this point. The figures look more realistic (no gi-normous eyes,) there’s a much more painterly quality to the animation and the story’s hewn from the same stone as more traditional sword & sorcery. I can close my eyes and picture these characters drawn by Frank Frazetta. Of course, I can’t help but sum up the series of bizarre pop culture associations I found while watching this by saying the episode felt like TEKKEN’s King saving the Winter Brothers from Monty Python's Black Knights in CONAN’s Hyperborean age. While it was seriously bad ass for Guin to hit one of the bad guys so hard that his helmet actually ignited a tree, I was a little disappointed that he didn’t start breaking out the German suplexes and piledrivers for a good old octopus combo.

Streaming interruptions notwithstanding, I’d be interested in watching where this goes, but only if the number of on-the-nose “Who am I? Where am I from” monologues decrease something fierce. You’ve got to go through those for any amnesiac plot, I know, but good lord, that was some eye-roll nonsense. Also, I want to point this show out to anybody who thinks Shinji’s whiney, because the prince of Paris (?) was actually getting on my nerves with all his belly-aching.

Watch this episode "The Leopard Head Mask" here and decide for yourself.

Check out my thoughts on the other shows I've sampled below...

This is one of those anime that couldnt keep me interested past the first episode.

Also, I do not recommend High School of the Dead

Well this is my favorite anime of 2009 after of course Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (though it was hard to choose between them).

This anime becomes almost very much like Game of Thrones later on. Though the introduction of the other main characters comes on a slower pace and not on the first few episodes but we do see the world eventually from the POV of those characters.   A lot of war politics, action and such and for the hell of it, Daenerys and Viserys Targaryen (the white-haired siblings from Game of Thrones) reminded me a lot of the Parros (this is how you spell it) siblings. Down to the hair, the dynamic and personality they have (the weak princess and the strong and fearless prince). Also the whole “Who am I? Where am I from”  kinds drops later, only because he never have time asking himself that. Though it might come up a episode it never becomes irritating imo.

If you like zombies and can stand fan service...lots and lots of fan service.  So much fan service that it becomes actually rather funny I do recommend high school of the dead.  Very much a slice of odd life not much is explained but it doesn't have to be, show is about characters and character development though in a certainly not normal situation.

Oh and if you are still looking for other shows to sample I recommend fairy musketeers for something different.  It can be found over at crunchyroll here:
http://www.crunchyroll.com/fairy-musketeers

this is a show aimed at children in Japan so no service but it does some VERY interesting things with American fairy tales and ends on a much more bittersweet note than childrens cartoons in America.  Some interesting discussion along those lines I think could be had about it.

I wasn't feeling HIGH SCHOOL that well. I did like GIANT KILLING and CLANNAD a lot, though.

Huh... didn't notice that first, but it's hard to miss now that you point it out.

@zaldar: Also, can you do me a favor and post that Fairy Musketeers link into the talkback in this thread? It's easier for me to keep track that way.  http://www.animevice.com/news/pick-the-next-watch-learn/5168/

yes Fan service is code for T and A.  Though in anime it can mean oher things....check out lotte this season.

Actually that brings up another point.  Should we have you do a watch and learn on a show that is airing now?  C or Steins gate would be great for that..
