Watch & Learn: FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST BROTHERHOOD #56

C'mon... Buccaneer should bite it.

 Sorry, dude...
 Sorry, dude...

Maybe this is bloodthirsty to say, but I think this show’s been playing it too soft on these characters. Oh sure, we’ve just seen Bradley shred through almost all the Briggs soldiers but, c’mon, you know he should’ve wasted Buccaneer, too. It’s the same thing that happened with Heinkel. The bad guys rough him up real bad, stab him a few times in sensitive spots and, in this case, even rip one of his limbs off… and the guy’s still going. Considering just how big the cast has gotten (when’s the last time we saw Winry, huh?) you’d figure the idea would be for at least some of them to fill a body count.

Glad to see Greedling show his smartass once again. I was wondering when that other shoe was going to drop. I really can’t call who’s going to win this fight but, judging by the intro, I suspect it’s going to have to be a team effort to take Wrath down. What exactly does his Ultimate Eye do, though? Does it speed up his perception or some-such?

Getting back to why I’m glad Greed is back… his involvement in this reminds me a bit of the role the Furies served in Greek mythology. Basically, they were a third party, neither good nor evil, who intervened in the affairs of gods and mortal to get revenge - - even, sometimes, when the wronged didn’t care anymore. They’d just keep showing up, even after a revenge cycle had run its course and they were basically everybody’s enemies. Does that seem maybe a little similar to this guy?

The prologue scene with Hohenheim seems to finally suggest that he’s responsible for Alkahestry and his confrontation with Father introduces some downright intriguing sci-fantasy concepts.  The whole notion that Hohenheim's triumphing over Father in some regard because he's actually taken the time over all these years to talk to every soul inside him individually... that's really brilliant. Maybe it's the purest solution to the oft-suggested notion of group identity vis a vis the Philisopher's Stones.

And hey, doesn't  Father’s true form look a lot like the deity Ed talked to past the Door of Truth?!?!

Silly Tom, that's just how anime and manga work. Unless the manga is 100% serious and realistic characters can take a hell of a beating and still show up the next episode.

Just ask Bleach and their infinite blood supply.

Bradley taking on a tank, Greed almost playing the hero, and Old Man Fu's grandfather-rage make this episode pretty awesome.  Seriously, Bradley mentions his abilities are going downhill, and how he is past his prime, and if he is that ridiculous, then I'd be scared to see what prime Bradley would have done.

@rubberluffy: Do you think he says that to make his enemies off guard?

Well if I remember correctly when Wrath first encountered Greed as he was talking about how old he is Greed looked away and Wrath came charging and chopped off his hand...

I think he might be serious about that, anyway just how much money does BONES have?  That tank scene was amazing.

This is my second attempt at posting a comment here. Had nasty winds and I lost power as I was finishing up my comment last night.

Really, Bradley is a literal ubermensch. The power as Wrath is enhanced perception. That's why it was given to him. What's the point of having the eyes to see all of this if the body can't use the information. His body is also different than the other Homunculi since he was designed to age. It's only natural that he wouldn't be as sharp as he was so many decades ago.

A series such as this can't have someone not dying. This is the big finale push of heroes versus villains. There are going to be loses on both sides. The preview of the next episode even implies a death.

I noticed something as I was writing a review for Fullmetal Alchemist Volume 10 for Anime Vice. Arakawa's artwork reminds me some of Joe MAD's (Battle Chasers/X-Men).

Good lord, you're right! The inking even looks like Tim Townsend's!

@Tom_Pinchuk:
You see the level of insight I can bring to these series by being so deep in both comics and manga? As an artist, I grew up studying many different styles from the U.S. and Japan. Tim Townsend is a pretty nice guy. I've never met him personally, but he often replies to people on deviantArt. Not many artists do.  Especially those of his caliber. Though, Fred Perry (Gold Digger/Sherlock Ninja) is still my artistic idol.

After you're done with the anime, you might want to check into the manga of Fullmetal Alchemist. The FMA: Brotherhood follows the manga pretty well, but the anime version leaves out and changes very minor details. The chibi reaction shots also work better on paper than animated. It's just too bad the editing and translation done by VIZ is so poor. They often make mistakes in names that it makes them look like amateurs.

Dig Deeper into Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is the second anime series based on Hiromu Arakawa's original manga. Edward Elric with his brother Alphonse failed to resurrect their mother. Now, they travel across the country with their alchemy to restore their bodies as they hunt for the mythical Philosophers Stone and correct their mistake.
