Watch & Learn: FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST BROTHERHOOD #37

So much evil lurking under such cute eyes.

 The most evil kids since the McCauly Culkin movie THE GOOD SON. Ha ha ha...

Well, I genuinely did not expect there to be that much more to cute lil’ Selim, nor for the last sin to be revealed like. They’ve all been hiding in plain sight, haven’t they? I figured the shadow waves with the teeth and the eyes were going to be some manifestation of Gluttony’s gut, but I was just a bit off, wasn’t I? It is pretty amusing to have such a sinister reveal behind him followed by that cute SNL-style photoshoot bumper of him with the gravelly voiced announcer “FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST.”

Kimblee actually is quite the gentlemen villain, playing with Winry’s trust like that. The team's very clever about the little touches like his Sunday suit and his dandy scarf, and the way he casually sips coffee in the cold. You'd never guess there was a wolf lurking under that sheep skin. At the same time, Winry’s just “entrapped” him the same way that Bradley’s entrapped Ed in this war of manners, hasn't she?

It’s been a while since that first episode with the false prophet, but what does a philosopher’s stone do if it doesn’t turn you into a homunculus? Does it just amplify your alchemy? Kimblee has to eat the thing. And if his real mission is, indeed, to find May, then that furthers my thinking that the homunculi use alkahestry as one of their secrets.

To use an metaphor appropriate to automail maintenance, they’re ratcheting up the romance between Ed and Winr, aren’t they? Things are going to be even more complicated now that she’s tagging along, intentionally putting herself in danger. I’ll give this show credit for making her willful and proactive enough to not be a damsel in distress, but still not excessively dangerous as to make everybody on this show an asskicker.

Watch this episode, “The First Homunculis,” below and decide for yourself, then read my comments on the previous episode here.

Pretty sure it was mentioned back in episode 3, but Philosopher Stones allow you to bypass Equivalent Exchange, and perhaps that is how they also power the Homunculi.  So in a way, they are an amplifier of alchemical skill.  Kimblee just keeps his in his stomach because 1) he's creepy and 2) he was hiding it all those years in prison, so why stop?

And Pride's reveal in the manga is way creepier looking.

This is roughly the part of the story I came into the manga. Right when Selim was revealed as Pride. It was my first true brick shating moment of FMA.

Alright everyone gather around the fireplace because it's time for ZombiePie's story time:

This takes me all the way back to middle school(or high school ?, I don't remember so well) where the internet was still young and GeoCities was still a thing. So I find out that one of my friends was a moderator for a Full Metal Alchemist fansite when the show was still on the air. So convincing myself that I had diplomatic immunity I got the hankering to troll. So after finding out that there was a Battle thread discussing who was the most powerful character in the Full Metal universe (the correct answer is Pvt. Pyle). So I created an account called "Francis Bacon" and whenever someone described an attack in the anime I used the Scientific Method to prove it physically impossible. I then created a John Dolton account an began explaining the atomic theory and how it prohibits alchemy...in every single thread. So I got all of the way to Albert Einstein and Niels Bohr and general relativity and quantum mechanics before they disabled my accounts. The next day I checked the site and there was this thread on the battle forums that was this massive apology about how they didn't quickly deal with a troll attack. In fact when I went to school the next day and after prompting my friend he described said troll as "an asshole, douche, ect." I never told my friend that it was me.

@zombiepie: ironically you are now a mod that prevents such trolls, at least at GB
zaldaron Dec. 19, 2010 at 4:09 p.m.
@zombiepie: ROFLLMAO My girlfriend actually came into the room to ask me if I was ok when I was reading this.  As a chemistry teacher I find this even more hilarious.  Though if you got all the way to quantum mechanics people could have eventually started to use that against you (as pretty much anything is possible in quantum mechanics).  Still we just need to find that friend of yours now and surpstisly drop him a link to this thread...

@Tom
You will never know how hard it was not to spoil this for you when you were talking about how giving bradly a son made him more normal.  God there should be a quest the don't spoil it quest worth like two levels of exp for this.

Oh and we need to find a name for the guild that is going to attack the anime monster so you can move up from almost an otaku.  I actually have a great Gandalf costume I can use...I am offering to tape myself here fighting and then send you the video to use as you see fit...

@buhssuht:  Hey, everyone is out of control when it comes to the internet when they are a teenager. That's why 4-chan exists.
@zaldar: I was amazingly still in character so with my Einstein and Bohr account I recreated the Copenhagen interpretation debates on a thread discussing who the most powerful homunculi (?) was.

I should state that I don't actually watch Full Metal Alchemist I just grew up with the Shawn Elliot school of griefing:

Ah right... I forgot about that. But if he had that,  why did he stay in prison. Just to cool his heels?

If you think about it, brick shating is the most impressive act of alchemy.

Probably he figured he'd get out eventually.  Kimblee is a strange guy, he didn't even care about going to prison when he killed those officers, so long as he kept the stone.  And his hands were bound specifically so he couldn't use his alchemical tattoos easily.

Ah another build-up episode to more action and "betrayal". Kind of funny how even the thought of love makes Ed go nuts but that just shows he feels something for Winry. And Winry flatout saying she loves Ed was a surprising touch.

Child monsters are the most fucked up thing in the entertainment industry.

I'm curious about how well Winry's new automail for Ed will work out.

@zombiepie:
Getting into some complex stuff explaining the unlikelihood of the precursor to chemistry. Funny story though but I have to say that while you have stated you will never talk about anime on here it seems you kind of broke your stance.
