Watch & Learn: Death Note Episode #28

So this is what you all warned me about.

C'mon, the fro IS the man.
C'mon, the fro IS the man.

Oh no! A loss greater than L’s death! The fro is gone! What is Aizawa without his puff of  frizzy hair?

A lot of you warned me about this current (and final?) arc of DEATH NOTE. While I’m still enjoying the show, there are definitely some "trouble spots."  First, isn’t it some ludicrous overkill for Mello’s gang to use a rocket to get the Death Note away from the bunker? Did the goon in the gimp mask stash the book in the war head? And speaking of him, heh... I get the sense that he didn’t need to wear that particular mask to conceal his face, but he wanted to. Maybe it’s my imagination, but the animation quality seems little dodgy in parts, too. Was the clip montage last episode a sign that this show might be running out of budget at this point? Does that kind of thing happen a lot in anime?

 You're such a thug, Mello.
 You're such a thug, Mello.

The voice acting in this dub has been stellar across the board up until this point, with Brad Swaille and Alessandro Julliani being the absolute stand-outs as Light and L. Once again, I’d love to see or hear more work from these guys And that makes Mello's voice actor just stick out a lot more. Maybe it fits the character as being a second-rate punk, but the voice he’s using sounds more like a cartoonish jock than an evil mastermind. I have been liking Near’s voice actor, though. The cadence is evocative of L's, but still unique unto itself.  And I really liked that  visual metaphor where the one dice takes his whole castle down just as one tiny mistake allows Kira to kill almost all of the task force.

Oh, and what a bizarre cliffhanger…

“Well, that sucks.”

An odd button line, to say the least. I wonder if the skeleton on the throne is the "old man" Ryuk was worried about ticking off earlier.

Keep doing these, they're very enjoyable!

To my knowledge the show wasn't running out of money. I remember the quality of animation being pretty good right up until the end. Maybe it was just this episode *shrug*.

Also in regards to my comment about the show being 'down to earth', i didn't really mean things like the  Shinigami. I meant more things akin to the rocket thing you mentioned in this episode.

Brad Swaille
Alessandro Juliani

That way you can see everything they've been in, I'm impressed that these two got by me in more than a few things. Brad via Nightcrawler in X men Evolution and Alessandro as Gambit. The one I remember Brad in most recent is Gundam 00 as Setsuna F Seiei or as Gundam Wing's Pilot Quatre Raberba Winner (which is what I remember most cause it was my first Gundam anime I watched way back when I first started watching anime ^^

This really shows the drastic different between Near and Mello. It shows you just how middle of the road L is when you see how aggressive he could of been.
I find it interesting that how Near is so young. He always seems much more confident then L about the statements he makes. If you listen to L's words carefully. He would often phrase things in a more hypothetical way, but have a almost suggestive tone to them. Very passive aggressive. More like a person who is asking a directed question.

This series at times makes the Japanese police look like the Key Stone Cops. Like when Chief Yagami was approached by one of Mello's gang, and Aizawa wanted to arrest him right away and he's talking with his hand to his ear. It's like he's screaming, "Mr. Kidnapper, how far should I follow so as not to be spotted?!".

Using the rocket is a bit James Bond villain. It's just the best tool for that job. A rocket couldn't be tracked fast enough to know wear it lands. Anything else would be slow enough to track.

Notice that Light was completely willing to kill his own sister to get his way. A complete innocent who has caused no harm to anyone. He's not out for justice. The only reason he doesn't do it is because he couldn't explain away her death. He's about C.Y.A.
Not to mention shouting down Misa for just trying to assist. Slapping away a drink she was offering him. Yet another example of this relationship following the same pattern of the Battered Wife Syndrome. She's not a person to him. She's a tool.

I do agree about that mask. It was awful fetishist for the design.

It was incredibly beautiful imagery using the dice. It doesn't even seem heavy handed since we watch him building it the whole episode. This is the kind of thing that works well in animation, but not to much in comic form.

This is probably the most ridiculous it gets.  There's a couple of really good Mello episodes though.  I think all 2 or 3 them are back to back starting with the next one.

And I really liked that  visual metaphor where the one dice takes his whole castle down just as one tiny mistake allows Kira to kill almost all of the task force.

Didn't Mello kill the task force?

The story kinda slows down for these few episodes before ramping up the tension again when Light has to be Kira and L while facing off against Mello and Near.

The odd thing is that I don't even remember the rocket. It must have been something I didn't like and blocked off from my mind

Where is the hulu link? I kinda need that to watch it and i cant find it.
zaldaron June 25, 2010 at 10:52 p.m.
Oh yes this is where it was made perfectly clear light was not a good guy though I had made that decision a long time ago.  I do wish they had kept it more vague where he could have been made it more a do you believe in the death penalty thing.  Still very good show and I love mello and near though I know many people don't.

Has misa done her song yet?  Still waiting to hear how you like that ;).

To explain what I am talking about and answer your last questions she is in a maid outfit I think walking down the street is near the end think the song is something like "what are you going to do when kira comes for you?" though I expect the line is better than that.  Yes the shinigami are supernatural but sill doesn't feel like horror to me.  It never scared me really.

@FoxxFireArt: Hmmm... now that you point it out, Near does seem a lot more cocksure than L.

What's C.Y.A. - - choose your alibi?

@sickVisionz:  The SPK? I thought it was Kira? Or did he was using the Death Note? There's so many complications to the death note ownership, I feel like I'm trapped in a net of shoelaces.

@ZachTheAnimeGeek: It's up there now, killer.

@zaldar:  Well I suppose they can only keep the moral ambiguity up for so long. We're already, what, more than nine hours into this?

I tend to do well in analyzing speech patterns and tone to examine personality. One of the reasons why I'm often so critical of dubs if I don't feel the tone in the voice is being accurately reflected in the expressions on the screen. I find it distracting. Death Note done a good job with the dubs. That's rare.

C.Y.A. (Cover Your Ass). I'm sure you've heard it. Sometimes It's also called C.Y.O.A. (Cover Your Own Ass)
sickVisionz moderator on June 26, 2010 at 7:01 p.m.
@Tom_Pinchuk: When Near's people are suiciding I thought that they show Mello snapping off his candy bar and then a guy in a white suit (you can only see his wrist and hand) writing names in a book that I assumed was the Death Note.  I assumed that person was with Mello since Light would have had to change into a white suit and change out of one in-between losing note and getting a call from Near.

If that wasn't Mello's doing then I lose a lot of interest in him as a character.  I always thought of him as a rogue who wants to piss off Near and avenge L and you couldn't always tell which thing was motivating him the most.

@Catolf:
I would like to remind you he also voiced Rock in Black Lagoon. I felt you got a better sense of depth in Rock with his voice as there were intense moments and somber moments.

Light most certainly did not kill the SPK memebers. Indeed it seemed that Light was not above killing his sister but I stick to what I said for one of the previous episodes that he would not stoop to killing his family. Light was damn close to doing it I'll give you that but his moral decisions have boundaries (which you would think would be his downfall by now given who is still alive). Another thing with this episode is how you can tell that LIght misses having L around as a 3 year reign has caused him to get rusty enough to be played by children.

Lol thanks :P

the song by the way was at the end of episode 25.  I'll check there to see if you mentioned it.  A you tube version with the sexy misa can be found here.
