Watch & Learn: Death Note Episode #22

Why can't L and Light just be friends?

 He even looks pretty dense in the manga.
 He even looks pretty dense in the manga.

I don’t know if Matsuda is quite naïve enough to be classified as the “holy fool” literary archetype, but he’s certainly got that elusive combination of nobility and stupidity (with one perhaps feeding the other.) I mean, he might not be the sharpest tool in the shack, but you’ve got to respect him for agreeing to go on TV with the understanding that it might spell his doom. That takes guts, if not smarts.

It’s fun to watch Higuchi sweat like this, but why go through all that rigmarole to deny him a name? If they’re taping him anyway, why not just not give him a new fake one and watch him write it in the Death Note? Or did I miss something and they’ve only got those specific offices under surveillance, so he has to be there? It certainly puts our good boy Matsuda in even more danger, though.   iguchi’s packing heat - -  there’s a good chance he’s just going to charge in there and gun him down.

 They might've even been * GASP * lovers in another world. Ha ha ha...

Some of you keep referring to some fearsome shift in this series. If it's this arc, I really have to disagree, because I’ve been thoroughly enjoying this bizarre premise flip that’s had Light join the team. Goes to show how circumstances and context can make allies or enemies out of anybody.  I guess it begs the question as to which identity is the real Light, though. Did the Death Note corrupt him, or just unleash latent tendencies he’d always harbored? Could L have become Kira if he’d found the Death Note, instead? Definitely some interesting notions to chew on.

I do find it fascinating how Light’s investigating himself so earnestly from this third person perspective; how he’s even theorizing about what conditions might have allowed him to be Kira and then forget about it. Light’s such a rationalist, he’s almost outfoxing his own amnesia.

And, man… L’s so close to figuring this whole mystery out. I wonder if the missing link is him factoring the Shinigami x-factor in to this deduction? I mean, he’s freaked out about the mere mention of them, he’s seen the hair flip… the gods of death have to be on his mind.

You can watch this episode, “Guidance,” for yourself on Hulu here, and read my comments about the previous episode here. Keep commenting! Give me your interpretation! Call me out on anything I'm getting wrong! This comments lives on discussion. I feeds on talkback messages like a vampire feeds on blood... SO FEED ME!

LE GASP lovers..

I liked the turn of event's, Light seemed so innocent, and eager to help L, they could have been really good friends. I do think that the Death Note corrupted him, but then it beg's the question 'When you give someone absolute power you see who they REALLY are." kind of thing.

Light's quest is to stop all crime, to make the world a safer place, a truly innocent ideal that I think became twisted over time. I think the light you see here is actually Light, eager to help stop crime, without the corruption of the Death Note he can be himself. Some people can't be trusted with power, even really good ideas will become corrupted in the end.

It is difficult to tell if it was the Death Note that made Light act in such a way. His personality without the Death Note memories is so radically different that it doesn't even reflect the way he behaved in the first episode when he first got the Death Note. I didn't really think about that until now.

@Catolf:
I agree to a point to what you are saying but  in ep 21 Light said noticed how criminals were being killed was close to what his method would be.

I have to say that Light was slightly corrupted by the Death Note but getting the Death Note was merely a way to speed up his agenda (that originally consisted of not killing innocent people). It's getting hotter as the story reaches a peak in the action.

@sotyfan16:  I think if Light had never got the Death Note he may have went on the be a lawyer or something dealing with people, possible a prosecutor with an agenda. A man who got things done! Thats how I see it.

@Catolf:  It sort of reminds me that conventional wisdom about how nobody's every changed by wealth or success, they just get to be who they really are. It's interesting how Light is starting to sympathize with Kira, here too.

It's pretty damn funny how they organized it all to be like a flubbed news report where the "secret" witness is accidentally revealed.

" It’s fun to watch Higuchi sweat like this, but why go through all that rigmarole to deny him a name? If they’re taping him anyway, why not just not give him a new fake one and watch him write it in the Death Note? "

Remember, at this point no one in the Task Force know exactly how Kira kills. They don't know what a Death Note is yet. You know it as part of the audience, but it hasn't been revealed to the cast as a whole. How would you make a fake of something you've never seen before?

I was impressed with how knowledgeable Rem is about how the police can track others through phone records and how diligently they are backed up by various parties.

I'm of the mind that Light is just like that. A lot of people may talk big or hide their inner deviance, but how many people would actually do something deviant if they thought they could get away with it? The classic Superego and Id dichotomy. Look how Higuchi uses the Death Note. He used it to manipulate stock prices in his favor. Only killing criminals as a cover. He was even frustrated he had to do it at all. He's using it for personal wealth and desire. Light was using it to try and make himself a god.

You know, screen shots are kind of limited on the site right now. If you ever need screen shots for your reviews here for certain episodes. Just tell me the moments you'd like and I can make some. I'm already working on screen shots for One Piece.

@Gasero: You think he was a little more smug in the first episode?
sotyfan16on June 18, 2010 at 4:07 p.m.
@Catolf:
I concur with you on that. Who knows, maybe he would have eventually teamed up with L.

@FoxxFireArt:  I just might take you up on the screenshot offer. We'll see.

Their whole plan to capture Higuchi is elegant in its stupidity, in a way, isn't it?

@Tom_Pinchuk:
If you are watching it on Hulu. It would be as simple as telling me the time code of those moments. If I can help. Don't be afraid to ask. I've noticed you've seem to be searching for images during these articles

The simplicity of it all is what makes it work. It's the "best laid plans" have have their flaws. The more moving parts. The more likelihood something could go terribly wrong.

 thats such a good one.. Death Note a great anime series.

No no, the "fearsome shift" isn't here yet. But it's coming soon.

I basically stopped watching after that. Except for the final episode, that was pretty satisfying.
