Watch & Learn: Death Note Episode #21

Probably the most morbidly-bizarre date ever committed to film.

 Aren't they just so cute together?
 Aren't they just so cute together?

Well, that had to be the most bizarre date ever committed to film (or animation cel.) Most times, it’s sex or money that’s either held up or put out. Between Misa and this new Kira, it’s nigh-omnipotent death god powers.  And as far as “dogging” goes, I don’t know how smart it was to try seducing Misa while parked right in the middle of a bridge with busy traffic. That’s really just asking for a public indecency citation.

Then again, maybe that isn’t illegal in Japan.

 Do you figure Rem would've kept watching if things actually got hot and heavy?
 Do you figure Rem would've kept watching if things actually got hot and heavy?

I’m going to call it - - Rem’s going to bite it for being in love with Misa. He/she’s been going well above and beyond the usual human/shinigami relationship to protect this girl. Unless there’s a twist (and there probably will be) he/she’s going to perish just like that ragdoll Frankenstein shinigami. And she’s just got to be just the most beautiful girl, huh? Just by being her normal, impish self, she’s gotten this ruthless businessman Higuchi and no less than two gods of death to start acting stupid on her account. And speaking of her “special friendship” with Rem… how messed up is that stalkers are such a normal part of her life that her first assumption when a giant skeletal demon suddenly appears in the mirror is that it’s probably an obsessed fan? Even when all her Kira-related memories are wiped, it’s clear that she’s still tremendously damaged. I suppose having your parents murdered and then avenged by a pop culture “Kali” will put anybody out of touch.

 Anybody else think of the "Cherry Pie" music video when they see his teeth get like this?

On a lighter note (not a death note,) I enjoyed all the comic relief in this episode. This stiff bodyguard having to play the role of an enthusiastic manager (and overacting like an amateur,) L pulling out a "director's megaphone" to dog on Misa's own acting and Watari wheeling out an entire buffet tray of treats for L. The master detective’s just got an insatiable sweet tooth.  Heh… seeing as how apples have such a hold on Ryuk (and I’m sure that’s going to come up again whenever he returns,) it’d really be hilarious if tasty snacks spell L’s downfall at some point. Why is Light going through all this trouble to figure out his name the hard way when he can just offer a twinkie in exchange for it?

You can watch this episode, “Performance,” for yourself on Hulu here, and read my comments about the previous episode here. Watch this episode and let me know what you think, yourself. Let's keep the comments and discussing going. I want to hear what you lunatics have to say!

It was a good episode, I found the guy especially creepy but that's how I think I'm supposed to feel. And yeah, Rem goes above and beyond the act of duty for Misa, I thought it was sweet, though Misa seems oblivious to a certain extent to what all Rem does for her.

@Catolf:  She seems oblivious of a lot of things.

@ninjadude853:  Gotcha. There seemed to be some dispute before.

L is a remarkable character in this episode. For someone who normally shows such little emotion on his face. He has a lot of personality in his behavior. I like how he tries to coach a pop idol to try and act.

You have to love how Rem says Misa would never be interested in this scum, but Rem already knows her obsession with Kira.

It's something I see in a lot of women. Though in Misa's case I think it more has to do with not being too bright. She is almost the Harley Quinn of Death Note.
How many times have you ever known a nice and attractive girl who will date a complete jerk?

From a sociological and psychological standpoint I find it fascinating. How many times can a person beat their head against a wall before they figure out the obvious answer about why their head hurts?

@Tom_Pinchuk:  Yeah.

YES! I've totally related her to Harley Quinn, in her choices in men. I didn't think anyone one else thought about it like that.

@Catolf:
Well, he's absolutely and totally devoted to Light despite how he treats her and uses her. Still will forgive anything for him. That's Harley Quinn.

I forgot what the reason was for Rem to be fascinated with Misa. It did get kinda creepy as things went on though. I don't ever think I clearly understood the connection. The writer telegraphed Rem's feelings pretty hard around these episodes though.

@Gasero: Rem's kind of a stalker for her, isn't she?
sotyfan16on June 18, 2010 at 12:36 a.m.

@Tom_Pinchuk:
Like I said, Light is a genious who has an ultimate master plan and it's stated by Rem. Higuchi is pawn who was already a bad man so why not make him Kira to save your own skin? Everything will start moving quickly; especially now that Misa can see Rem again and could ruin everything.

Dig Deeper into Death Note

A shounen franchise of enormous popularity, Death Note started with Tsugumi Ohba's manga, illustrated by the popular artist Takeshi Obata. The series is essentially an extended police chase thriller, but with added twists, including the existence of Shinigami (death gods) who can control the death of humans.
