Watch & Learn: Death Note Episode #20

Is L just a lonely young man?

 Ha... just imagine the calamity that would ensue if these two actually dated.
 Ha... just imagine the calamity that would ensue if these two actually dated.

Just when I thought this show had pulled as many rabbits out of the hat as it could…

DEATH NOTE has nu metal intro and outros, now? Is this DVD set reading my mind or something? I didn’t have any problems with the emo songs they were using for, but I’m a metalhead, so this is like getting peanut butter with my chocolate (in an L-style mouse!)

Gee… I’ve heard J-pop, J-rap, even Japanese hair metal before… but never Japanese nu metal before.  I suppose there really is every conceivable kind of sub-genre out there.

 Are you just the loneliest master detective in the world, L?
 Are you just the loneliest master detective in the world, L?

You know, considering how much more “agro” things show just got, I’m glad this show still isn’t afraid to be silly at times (even though I know Gasero and Contra differed with me about Matsuda.) I’m talking specifically about the part where all three of these kids grabs hands and dance in a circle, but there are really too many examples to get into. L, Light and Misa’s banter is a gas - - they’re excellent foils for eachother (especially when they’re having foot fights.)  There's actually some serious character clues underlining all the comedy, too. For example, the part where Misa kisses L's cheek…

He says, “I think I could fall for you,” like a starstruck puppy.

Then she says, “Let’s not go that far,” before moving the conversation along.

Funny, of course, but it also opens the question of whether L’s actually fallen for any girl before. His background’s just so mysterious, you can’t even say how old he is. He could the same age as Light; he could  be young or older. You can’t be sure.  I definitely do get the impression that he's been so consumed with solving these grand cases that he’s never had time for, well, having a life (girlfriends included.)

You can watch this episode, “Makeshift,” for yourself on Hulu here, and read my comments about the previous episode here. Watch the episode, form your own opinion and comments! Whether you agree or disagree with me, I want to hear what you have to say! Like I've said, I'll keep watching this show through to the end, and maybe even watch some of the live-action movies, as long as we keep a discussion going. SO LET YOUR VOICE BE HEARD BELOW!

KEEP WATCHING!! I love this trip down memory lane. It's been forever since I've watched DN, and it reminds me of the days when I first watched it.

@ZachTheAnimeGeek:  They're dropping F-bombs? In Japanese?

@Tom_Pinchuk:
In the opening. They could have dubbed it wrong but thats what it said

I remember when this episode started and the new music came in.  I was really happy that they had changed it.

Up to this point Light has killed hundreds of people, he considers himself to be a god, he's killed innocent police officers without thinking twice and sent a widow to her grave and didn't flinch.  Soft alternative emo rock doesn't really suit a character like that.  Light is a real deal grade A psychopath and the music really got that point across.  He'll kill people and watch them die while a big grin is on his face like he's a 5-year old with a 3-scoop ice cream cone.

Seeing him screaming manically while the singer was screaming and distorted guitars were blaring was perfect.  This intro was one of the only anime intros that I always watched rather than fast forwarding.

Have you ever noticed that most master detective characters are normally single. Sherlock Holmes, Hercule Poirot, and L. Batman has had some ladies on and off, but none have ever stuck. Well, I guess you could loosely define "sticking". Considering a child was produced with one of them.

My favorite lines in this episode would have to be,

Misa - "I would never dream about living in a world without Light."
L - "Yes, that would be dark."

"I really think so......"
I'm sorry, I couldn't help myself. Reading that line reminded me of the song by the band The Vapors.
Technically they are dropping F-bombs in English. That line in the song "ningen" mean "human". It can be heard in the chorus.

" Hey hey ah ningen sucker ah nigen ningen F--?
Hey hey ah ningen sucker ah nigen ningen F--? "

I kind of had mixed feelings about this new opening. The imagery was pretty cool. It was a tad spoiler-ish, but in such a way that you couldn't know what it was until after it happens.
I just couldn't stand the beginning and very end of the cat-strangling screaming.

This episode had a good bit of psychological banter as well. Though brief, L and Light try and feel each other out to understand their plans and thoughts (ending in yet another near-fight).

@FoxxFireArt:
I really liked that line as well.

Also here we see how even with all the task force has been through they cannot agree on how to go about catching Kira and arresting others who are responsible.

I'm thinking that Death Note, Bleach, and even Naruto could now use a Quest Set of their own.

In my opinion, this is the height of the anime since events after these next few episodes go downhill from here. After a certain event that will come soon, I stopped watching DN.

The Nu music wasn't bad. But the original intro and ending themes captured the feel of the series more. In the later episodes, things get too epic. It starts to lose the more interpersonal feel that made the series great. Nonetheless, it's worth seeing all the way through to the end. And the ending is actually really good. Regardless of your feelings toward certain characters, it's heart-wrenching to watch.

"TIME TO DIIIIIIIIIIIIE!!!!!!!"

I hated that second opening. Took me away from the series a little bit, especially since I loved the first opening...still listen to that one on my playlist.

When the Matsuda and this episode arrived it became too obvious that the author was exploring the relationships between the characters. Light and Misa had no Death Note memories and things were going kinda slow, but having a third Kira made it interesting because Light was helping L track him

You have a weird view of what constitutes Emo. and Nu Metal. That's clearly Black Metal. And why wouldn't Japan have metal? It's an entire country. It has all genre of music.

Are you drunk?  In what fucking way are Maximum The Hormone Black Metal?   They are not Norwegian.  They never burned down a church.  They are not Norwegian.  They  have a female band member, and real black metal artists have no regard for women (DON'T YOU DARE FUCKING CRADLE OF FILTH ME, FAIL, SMACK!!!!).  They are not Norwegian.  Then I can get into the fact that their album's trademark funk-groove has more in common with Red Hot Chili Peppers than it does Gorgoroth.  DID I MENTION THEY ARE NOT NORWEGIAN?!

Yeah, hate to make you look like a chump in front of your friends but you brought it on yourself.  Grab a napkin hommie, you got served.

@lilmikeegee:  Where do the difference lie?
No_name_here staff on June 17, 2010 at 2:16 p.m.
@sickVisionz:  It does seem to fit a change in town for the series. Things are getting more intense, now.

@Wales: I don't know... everybody keeps warning me that this series is going to get bad soon, but I've still been enjoying it.
No_name_here staff on June 17, 2010 at 2:30 p.m.
@FoxxFireArt:  Cat-strangling screaming. Ha good way to describe. There are few frontman who pull off aggressive vocals well enough. I don't know about the whole "Whatup people?!" shrieking at the end.

Yeah, it is noticeable that Batman hasn't had a steady girl like Superman has. Wasn't Holme's old flame that Adler chick?

The world without light quip was great too. Too many good parts to get into!
Waleson June 17, 2010 at 3:30 p.m.
@Tom_Pinchuk: Don't get me wrong, its a great series. Its just certainevents that transpire really made me step away from it. And when the word bad is used, its not in the "this is so stupid, lets do something else" its more of a "I can't believe this has happened" bad. Its a good feeling but at the same time it hinders you.
