Watch & Learn: Death Note #11

I'm liable to snap over all this tension!

It's crazy that a suit's one of the best characters here, but that's just the case!
It's crazy that a suit's one of the best characters here, but that's just the case!

How is this show so consistently gripping? I'm in constant awe.  It’s like it just plucks white knuckle tension out of thin air. There’s like four or five scenes that’ll put you on the edge of your seat in this episode, alone.  Kira seemingly taking a TV station hostage…! That one task force member running to his doom…!! Chief Yagami suddenly smashing through the entrance in a van…!!!

Holy crap. I don’t even know what to say. I feel more than a little silly for being reluctant to watch this show in the first place. “It looks goth! The premise sounds silly!” I’m definitely eating my words, now.

You're gonna give yourself a heart attack, Chief! Oh wait...
You're gonna give yourself a heart attack, Chief! Oh wait...

Hands down, the best scene had to be when Chief Yagami’s walking out of the TV station to find a human barricade protecting him.  No lie, I was getting goosebumps watching that.  The notion of authorities refusing to negotiate with terrorists is sort of a stock line in these kind of stories, but this was one of the rare examples where you actually feel it. You’re really stirred by the police’s defiance of Kira. Actually, I’d say Chief Yagami’s definitely one of my favorite characters in this show. He’s putting himself on the line, enduring humiliating probes into his private life, giving himself heart attacks from stress and acting in the face of overwhelming danger to fight for this system he believes in. And his heroism (and his tragedy, really) is doubled by the fact that it’s son who he’s fighting against this whole time.  The apple (pun intended) has fallen far from the tree, sadly.

Just powerful stuff.

There’s just something… mythic about this small task force going against this impossible, elemental force, like they’re taking on death itself.  And there's something coldly compelling about how they're  limited mainly by the number of bodies they have.

And there’s a second Kira now? That’s the girl from the opener! I was wondering who she was.

Man, I don’t think my head can handle all these twists and turns. Keep it coming.

I remember needing to actually take a few minutes away from the computer after I had watched 9, 10 and 11 all in the one hour-ish block. It's just so intense; one episode a day is really all that should be recommended by physicians.

I've finished 16 at the moment and trust me, fella; the twists and grip-me-by-the-balls moments are relatively light at the moment.

EDIT: Hey, I managed to get a first comment for what might have been the first time in my life. Mostly for a lack of caring to try.

This show surprised me much in the same way that Battlestar Galatatica remake did. It was like a great war time drama that just happened to be set in space.
I didn't have high expectations, but I found it gripping. I loved the L character more and more, and I was hating Light more and more. Watching him torment and murder innocent people. Just the fact that I know how much I hate him is a testament to the quality of the writing.

I remember an interview with John Larroquette where he was talking about his role in the film adaptation of Richie Rich. He said he knew he did his job right as a villain when he walked out of the movie theater and some kid kicked him in the shin. (I remember the craziest $#@&.)

This episode really pointed out something interesting that sometimes a person will just have a heart attack. Still, it comes at what could be the worst possible time for Light, then another Kira. This could be great for Light, but it also means somehow someone just might happen to have the same ability.
Greek mythology teaches us what happens when there is more then one "god". lol

I was one of the people that was against the show when it first started as well. I thought Death Note was some symbolism for a goth fantasy show. Fortunately, after I watched the first episode and realized what the series was really about, I was hooked.

I know I commented on one of your posts that the show didn't really seem goth to me (other than the Death God designs), but that was after I watched an episode.

It slows down quite a bit and gets away from everything that made the show good soon so don't worry.

I hated Light since episode #7, when he wacked that FBI agent's fiance. Not only was it unneccessarily cruel, but dumb. It drew even more attention to him. Then, there's the episode where he's hugging Misa while considering killing her. The fact that he dragged his father through all that crap didn't surprise me. It pained me to see it, but it didn't surprise me.

@FoxxFireArt:
Yeah, I'm with you. To me, L and Ryuk made that show. Rem was almost motherly. Even annoying Misa was likable. But Light Yagami is pure scum. Damn, I hated him.
