Watch & Learn: CODE GEASS #9

When did LeLouch join a frat?

 A sufferer of such indignities.
 A sufferer of such indignities.

At what point did LeLouch join a frat? Was it while I was grabbing some OJ from the fridge? The student council forcing him to get furry is pretty involved hazing for a high school (even if it is a private one.) I was tempted to say, “Ironic… he had the power to save the ones he loved, but not himself,” because this series is seriously pushing the whole secret identity dichotomy. If the big kids on campus pushed him any farther, I was half-expecting him to command them all to kill themselves. Although, that’s pretty much what I’m expecting him to do in every conflict situation, now - - and is that so wrong? I certainly figured he’d make those bullies do something a little worse to themselves instead of just walking away and forgetting about it.

If we want to talk about levels of confusion, though, I was definitely more confused about Kallen’s whole revelation with her mother. Were all those portions at her mansion supposed to be a flashback? Did she huff some Refrain off-screen? If not, than how did she just suddenly recognize her maid to be her mother after being in daily contact with her for years?

Memory’s a funny thing, I suppose. My own memories of DEATH NOTE keep getting invoked as the web of deception’s starting to cinch in on LeLouch. I mean, if that one Britannian pilot’s already starting to rationally explore the limits of her own unnatural amnesia (kind of like Light’s reasoning during his back-and-forth mind wipes,) how long can he keep his secret? He’s doing a horrible job at being discrete, right now.

Also, too bad I didn’t know about this Refrain stuff when I put together my top list of fictious drugs. It could be placed on the shelf between Nuke and Squid.

Watch this episode "Refrain" below, decide for yourself and then read my comments on the previous episode here.

Well Kallen does know that the Maid is her mother. She just ignores that fact to keep her safe.

I think you missed the point of that whole scene. She's always known that's her mother. She just realized the reason her mother was always there. Kallen believed that her mother was working there to stay close to the man that fathered her. She thought that her mother was so blindly in love with that man she would suffer all the emotional abuse to stay there.

It was only in that moment did Kallen finally realize that her mother suffered through all of that to stay close to her. It had nothing to do with her father.

You get a little more insight into her thoughts as Lelouch is watching her. Her mother gave up all her parental rights to her father in hopes Kallen could have a better life living as a Britannian. Descrimination against Japanese is the Britannnian's public policy.

Lelouch has a sort of Clark Kent moment i this episode. When he's talking to Kallen alone. He purposely says what he doesn't honestly think to see how she will react. He was testing her resolve. He also points out the rational choice when she was ready to burst into that fight. If she defended that guy, they would be back and make it impossible for him to work.

@metalsnakezero:
It had nothing to do with keeping her safe It was spite. Everyone knows who she is.

totally forgotten about this episode I think this was about when I dropped it because it was getting just a little to crazy.  Don't remember much about this one but will try to find time to rewatch it...may not happen for a bit though.

Every day has frat hazing with Milly Ashford!

But seriously, that bitch is crazy.

The next episode begins the Battle of Narita. And as i mentioned before, it's one of my favorite parts of the series, right up there with the finales and the China episodes.

I think the sub version would made it more clear for you about Kallen's situation. Sub>Dub.

I think I would have enjoyed the series a little bit more if Lelouch randomly used his powers on some people, just for fun.

Ah... that clears it up some. I still think it was presented a bit disjointedly in the episode, though.

The real question is... is he putting up with the hazing to maintain that meek secret identity, or is he just a pushover when it comes to girls (in... uh... non-combat situations)?

Heh.... well, it's not like it's going aware (unless Bandai likes to randomly drop streaming shows, too.)

Maybe so, but it wouldn't be as fun!

Lelouch sort of eluded to it before. When Lelouch and Nunnally were sent to Japan. They firt stayed at the Kururgi Shire of Suzaku's family. After the war broke out and they were thought to be dead, they moved to the Ashford Academy under a different family name.

The Ashford Family were very strong supporters of Lelouch and Nunnally's mother Marianne. After she was assassinated, they lost pretty much all their connection to status. They lost their nobility. The Ashford Family took Lelouch in with Nunnally to hide them. Out of respect for the family, he more follows the whims of Milly. When they moved to the school, Milly was the one who convinced her grandfather to have them both stay in the school's club house so he could tend to her handicap. Even their maid, Sayoko, was originally Milly's maid when she was growing up.

A lot of this information was told in the Audio Drama CDs that were released that fill in background. They were CDs that had songs performed by the voice actors and they did audio dramas that were performed by the actors in character. The first season Audio Dramas had canon material.

Basically, if you do something nice for Nunnally. You get a lot of leeway with Lelouch. Also, they did still have to tie him up to manage that.
