Watch & Learn: CODE GEASS #16

C'mon... this is ridiculous.

I thought she was blind?
I thought she was blind?

C’mon... seriously?! Mao got absolutely lit up by an entire squad of police last episode and he’s already back and scheming? Did everybody start loading their guns with Skittles after Clovis’ murder? CC got shot like eight times last episode, too, and she shook it off like the classic “minor flesh wound.” I haven’t seen bullets this useless since SIN CITY. It’s not enough that they don’t actually much damage, they’re also apparently slower than mayflies. Suzaku can suddenly dodge a machine gun’s spray now, too? And he can run up walls and jump through windows, as well, so I’ll have to assume he downloaded some combat training programs from a MATRIX operator in between episodes.

Am I the only one who thought this episode was utterly ridiculous? A friend of mine called CODE GEASS one of his guilty pleasure and I’ve really been seeing why lately. It’s so overwrought (even for anime,) its plot holes are getting wider and deeper, many of its twists are utterly ridiculous when you step back and look at them... yet you’re compelled to keep watching like you should be with any soap opera.

Maybe the only thing I’m not going to give a full “Get Out of Jail” card to is the convincingness of Nunnally’s voice actress. It’s drawn me out since the beginning, but I’ve been holding off on saying so. She sounds like the schtick-y “little girl” voice some improv actor would put for a skit on WHO’S LINE IS IT, ANYWAY? So many otherwise intense scenes become unintentional hilarious when she speaks - - “It’s a trap, LeLouch!” I feel like we could have a legitimate drinking here.

All that said, I’m just dying to see what happens next.

Watch this episode “Nunnally Held Hostage” below, decide for yourself and then read my comments on the previous episode here.

Yeah, Nunnally's voice actor is probably the only one in the entire dub i don't think did a very good job, especially compared to the Japanese Seiyu.

And about those plot holes... bring it on Tom. If you (or anyone else reading this) says something to me about a plot hole, i will fill it. I don't' care what it is, i will fill it. The only plot hole i can't fill is Suzaku's superhuman attributes, like the aforementioned bullet dodging. The creators were going to have an explanation for that in r2, but the whole creative process was a really hectic so they couldn't find the time. But anything other than that, i WILL FILL.

Oh, and C.C. survived the bullet wounds because she has a slow acting healing factor. She was shot in the Head in the first episode remember? She's immortal.

EDIT: VERY IMPORTANT MESSAGE FOR THOSE WHO HAVE SEEN THE END OF THE SHOW.

Ridiculous? You want ridiculous? How about the Safety Dance? That's pretty ridiculous:

The show was fairly ridiculous from the get-go, so Suzaku's magical ability to dodge bullets didn't really bother me.

Oh it gets ridiculous eh huh.  That it does.  This kind of stuff is only the beginning of the ridiculous.  Just wait a few episodes..

Looks like Tom has caught on faster than I thought he would. This is about where my eyebrows started to raise while watching Geass. I still liked watching it though.

I really agree that Mao living through all of that is utterly silly. I told you that this part of the story sort of took the plot off it's direction. Still, it was needed. This showed us the cost of overusing the Geass. That it could eventually go out of control. Thankfully, this side story is over and it's back to the main plot.

Not to mention, Mao surviving all those gunshots is going to contradict something later. Suzaku and Lelouch were designed as opposites. While Lelouch is brilliant, he's physically weak. Suzaku isn't nearly as smart, but physically suppose to be the peak. He often seems to defy the laws of physics. The way he spins as he kicks earned him the nickname from series fans, "Spinzaku".

Nunnally and Lelouch's voice actors are two of the reasons why I suggest the Japanese version. Nunnally just sounds annoying in English and Lelouch loses his feel.

@lurkero: I started thinking oddly about this series back when I first got a glimpse at Cornelia's collar.  The moment I saw Suzuka kick a freaking automated turret off the ceiling, however, was the point where I treated this show as a joke in a sense.  It never stops getting weirder, and the plotholes never get smaller.  It's as if one of the writers looked at the footage and said, "This show just got weird, and we can never go back, can we?"  Then everyone else agreed and continued to shape the show in this episode's image.

Also, I've always wondered where C.C. keeps getting her outfits.  Within the past three episodes, she's gone through 3 already.  Is Lelouch letting her put them on his card, or something?

If he has the power to dodge bullets, does he have the power to mend a broken heart, too?

Please, nobody comment on the clearly spoilerific fanart he posted at the top. Let's just let him forget about that.

I'll be sure to get back to you on this.
