Well, it’s a good thing that I properly braced myself for disappointment. This ending wasn’t frustrating, it didn’t get me angry, but it wasn’t satisfactory in any respect, or even conclusive. I’d hate to be anybody who was watching this while it was first airing. Righteous revenge isn’t taken, romance isn’t consummated, an ally dies in a rather pointless way and the heroes and the villains just go their separate with enough unfinished business as to leave almost everything unresolved.
Some critic, somewhere out there, is surely championing this as ambiguous and challenging. I say “Meh.”
If they were running out source material and needed a way to wrap things up quickly, would it have been so bad just let Clare finish Priscilla off? At least there would’ve been some “unity of action” there. It’s cases like this that really make me think that a live-action remake would actually benefit things. This series had so many awesome scenes and concepts and themes - - hell, the whole idea of Priscilla being in such denial that she still hates Yoma in this episode is just so ripe with potential - - and they're all just lying there like so many loose threads just begging to be tied together.
I’m leaving this series with two overriding thoughts...
- There’s a strong, undeniable mental image of Clare just dominating Raki in some nasty S&M sex. He’s got to be the most (charmingly) submissive “boy toy”ever depicted.
- I feel like the aforementioned theoretical LA remake would actually add this all up together. It’s almost just begging for it.
Odds are, we probably won’t get a sequel series to this, and I likely won’t be reading the manga, so why don’t you lunatics do me a favor and tell me how things spun out from the divergent point in the comic? While you’re at it, throw some questions about the series which I can address when I shoot a video on my final thoughts on the show some time over the next couple days. You know I'll answer them.
Oh and, incidentally, I looked over my predictions from episode #19 and it looks like I was basically right on three out of the four of them. So +500 XP points for me.
