Watch & Learn: ASTAROTTE'S TOY #1

I hope you all realize what this is really about.

This was the least skeevy picture of the show that I could find online.
This was the least skeevy picture of the show that I could find online.

Oh, I get it!

This is just like CASPER THE FRIENDLY GHOST! That’s right, instead of a lil’ poltergeist who bucks tradition by wanting to befriend living people instead of scare them, we’ve got a young succubus who thinks stealing semen from human men is gross. Yes, let none of you lunatics be confused, that’s what Princess Astarotte’s minders are so blatantly alluding to. Succubi are demons from Kabbalistic traditions whose mythical behavior of taking fair guise and seducing dudes at night are thought to have been pre-science rationalizations of nocturnal emissions. You know, wet dreams. The fact that Astarotte’s name is clearly a cutesy take off of the demon Astaroth just goes along with all of that. Of course, this shows also randomly drops gobs (the best term for the situation, really) of Norse mythology on top of all that with Yggadasil, the world tree, and all the references to these pretty lil’ demons being descendants of Heimdall. You should totally recommend this to anybody who enjoyed THOR.

Audience classifications get so rigid in the realm of manga and anime, but I can’t really tell who this is intended for. It’s not as overtly ribald as PANTY & STOCKING, but I just can’t imagine a shojo show wHere the subject of spooge is hanging over plot point and dialog like a properly descended scrotum. It helps that it’s actually funny, of course. The visual vocabulary of slapstick in Japanese usually rubs me raw, but this was the first time I’ve watched a comedy show and thought, “Hey, this actually has some good timing.” Maybe we should just establish a new demographic of “arrested adolescents” and scoot this under that umbrella with every other piece of genre entertainment that uses the appearances of children’s programming to tackled adult topics.

Watch this episode "The Exclamation of Our Meeting" here and decide for yourself.

Actually, instead, you should think happy thoughts and hum this song until your minds are clean...

Wow you actually watched this and didn't go into a fit of rage...?  I'm impressed....in its defense it gets over the premise pretty fast and stays cute.  The field this plays to is one that likes cute moe things...I don't think we have a group like this in America outside anime....

I am actually enjoying it but I feel really dirty about it...

My curiosity made me watch a couple minutes of this, but my conscience made me stop. I'm starting to think there will never be another Japanese cartoon that interests me as much as the classic shonen.

Japanese animators have to know that not all of the audience likes seeing panties, jiggling breasts, and perverted themes in everything.

Didn't know you were going to give this one a shot, I'm impressed you giving everything a try.

It's actually a really cute and funny show and shouldn't be judged on it's premise. I was pleasantly surprised after checking it out.

The survey/sampling's going to be exhaustive, my friend.

I know you're trying to present this in as best a light as you can, the cute/funny story of a young dad trying to deal with a succubus who is trying to escape her own fate, but I keep thinking of Yahtzee's parable of the dick in pudding:

"It might still be good pudding and you can spend all afterrnon explaining that to people but no one's still going to eat it because YOU STUCK YOUR DICK IN IT!"

Justify it all you want, but I just can't get past the mostly pedophilic premise for this kind of show.

@Tom_Pinchuk: like Doc Haus said...I thought that would be the reaction.  However it is still cute and they really show very little and by the fifth episode it basically dissapears.  Still is there something creepy about people watching a show and enjoying it because of cuteness of ten year old characters...yes, but remember this is the country with a Jr. Idol industry...

Thanks for informing me what this show actually is. I have seen some trailers and such but didnt really get anything out of those.
I may check this out but im a little sceptical.

Semen classic is soooo much better than "new semen."

Forgive me for bumping this, I might try this series to see if it's better than Reverse harems based on visual novel games.

Daniel_Newton moderator is online on July 28, 2012 at 9:31 p.m.

@takashichea: Like I said before in the comments in this article (wow, this was posted over a year ago?) I found this to be a surprisingly good anime. The production quality is pretty high too, it might be one of the most visually appealing shows I've watched.

If you're expecting it to be a reverse harem though, you'll be disappointed. From what I can remember, the male lead character gets like... one rival. There are way more female characters.

@Daniel_Newton:

Like two guys gunning for a girl. I might have to fix the Reverse harem page if it's not one.

Daniel_Newton moderator is online on July 28, 2012 at 9:58 p.m.

@takashichea: Yeah, he gets one rival, and from what I can remember that was it. Astarotte is supposed to build up a male harem for herself but she's afraid of men, so it doesn't happen in the anime. I don't know about the manga but I doubt it ever happens in that either.

You should probably just watch a few episodes for yourself, I think it might still be available on Crunchyroll.

@Daniel_Newton:

Those innuendos, dude. When that pinked hair tells Astarotte to suck the life seed, I was like what??

I'm surprised that Rie Kugimiya voices Astarotte. I hear Happy's voice in Kagura of Gintama but not her. I guess I haven't watch a lot of shows with Rie Kugimiya's tsundere characters.

Daniel_Newton moderator is online on July 28, 2012 at 10:21 p.m.

@takashichea: It shouldn't be that surprising. Whenever you find a loli-tsundere character, it's probably voiced by Rie, and Astarotte definitely fits the loli-tsundere archetype. Rie Kugimiya is actually one of my favourite voice actresses, mostly because of her role as Louise in The Familiar of Zero.

Dig Deeper into Astarotte's Toy

The next soon-to-be-queen is a daughter of a succubus queen Astrarotte "Lotte" Ygvar, who just reached age of 10. As a tradition Lotte must build her own harem full of men. The problem is that she hates men.
