Was KILL LA KILL Actually Any Good?

THE VICE PIT. With a few months of hindsight, Sam and Tom have very different takes on Trigger's bold series.

It started with promise, but turned repetetive, boring and unfunny pretty quickly. It had too many of the cliches that I hate in it.

I really enjoyed KILL LA KILL. I would say it's my favorite series of last year. While I liked ATTACK ON TITAN, it just doesn't have the same rewatch value of KILL LA KILL. I watch at least one episode after my workouts on Netflix. The action and the art are incredible in so many scenes.

A lot of people seem to miss that this series is an action-based parody of the high school experience. Every arc of the plot had a school theme. You had the school clubs, the sports cultural festival, the classic trip to the Kansai region, there is a one month break in the Japanese school year, and a one month time skip in the story. Japanese school uniforms are based on military uniforms. Trigger just took that and made them combat uniforms.

What I especially like is that they told what is an action-shonen story using two female leads. Neither were overtly girly and both were strong in their own way. Normally, you'd see this sort of story with male characters. Trigger completely avoided doing any half-assed romance for both Ryuko or Sastuki. They weren't ever fighting over some boy in a petty rivalry, as you'd more often see in other series with female leads. They were on their own quests. Ryuko looking for the answers about her father's death, and Sastuki plotting to betray her mother.

Sure, the series has a lot of fan service (or T&A), but it does nearly as much on the guys as it does on the women. One of the points that turned me around on Satsuki is her speech on how she doesn't care about the morality of the masses or how much of her body is exposed. It was her ambitions that are pure.

I thought I was going to hate Satsuki as I went into the series, but she became my favorite. She's powerful, clever, and it was interesting how we learn more about her character through the flashbacks of the Elite Four. All the while she was plotting her revenge for her father and baby sister. That's rather justifiable. The flashbacks made perfect sense to me. We see why the Elite Four came to her side. They show what it was about Sastuki that drew them to her.

Both Ryuko and Satsuki start and end the series as different people. They grew through the events of the story. That's one of the signs of a good story.

People thought the idea of Life Fibers being an alien organism is bizarre, but how it that any stranger than spiral energy from GURREN LAGANN? I thought it was clever the way they took the phrase "the clothes make the man" and made it literal. Humans are pretty much the only organism on the planet that wears clothes. Why is that? Why is that Western culture is so uncomfortable with nudity? My lord, Janet Jackson flashes a nipple at the Super Bowl, people lose their bloody minds over it, and the FCC changes the rules of what can be aired on TV. Who cares if Trigger's explanation is so wild? Does anyone have a better explanation for how a set of clothes can talk?

A lot of the complaints I often read about KILL LA KILL more often sound like people who are looking for reasons to hate it. Going so far as to question the physics behind sight gags, such as Mako catching cash. Others would say that the series has concepts they don't explain, but the dialog overtly explains it. That just tells me they weren't even paying attention to the dialog.

Well it sure was an interesting back and forth we all had here about it. I made my own review and went to toe with people on here but hey it was all good conversation and discussion

Good to see you back Sam...bringing that Ying to Tom's Yang....

Maybe not enough time has passed for Tom on this yet :P but are we gonna have a vid on Hunter x Hunter from both of you sometime down the line....again i would like to hear Sam's thoughts if he caught up to it as much as Tom did with the Chimera Ant Arc being over now

Lol, Wait a minute, dose you this mean you guys are secretly brothers!?, I still think Kill La Kill was a pretty good time for the most part, It's no Jo Jo, but then again what is?, It was sloppy in parts and the plot was hardly thought out, But it had style and charisma in spades, more importantly it's unlike any thing I've seen before,

I enjoyed Kill la Kill much more than Jojo, although I watched Jojo after the series had mostly wrapped up.

As was mentioned, I don't think a message is necessary for a show to be entertaining. It is okay for entertainment to be entertainment. It was hilarious, the characters were engaging and the confrontation ranged from intense to full out laughter.

And one point that I always seem to disagree with most others is this: You can be funny AND have a point at the same time. In fact, most times I actually prefer that. A series that can make me both laugh and put me at the edge of my seat would be held in higher regard than one that can only do one or the other.

I still love the series. Trigger did struggle to carve an identity for itself with the series after splitting from Gainax. Based on from what Sick and the others said, Trigger is more explosive and loose with its animation over story while Gainax had a better execution with story and surrealism in FLCL.

I enjoy there are discussion on its messages: making fun of fan service by oversexualizing guys and women, the red string theory, and parodying school life etc.

The series start off strong. Sure, it went overtop and with a bang, but it was getting a bit stale and repetitive a bit. It was evident that the story in Kill la Kill was weaker than its parts. This anime is not for everyone. You enjoy it more if you don't take it seriously.

@SpectroRaphael:

It was a coming of age story for Ryuko as I recall our arguments of Kill la Kill vs Gurren Lagann.
