VIZ Shojo/Shonen Prices Reach Everyone Else's

Oh nooooes! VIZ is going to still be cheaper than almost everyone else but not by as much! What so ever shall we doooooooo!

CWR notes
that VIZ is raising the prices for Shonen Jump and Shojo Beat tankobon from the ~$7.99-$8.99 range to $9.99. Considering that the last two books I bought were $12.99 (VIZ Signature's 20th Century Boys volume 2) and $10.99 (My Heavenly Hockey Club volume 7), and since even TOKYOPOP has mostly moved beyond its former $9.99 MSRPs, I honestly can't be very surprised or upset.

That said, CWR also got comment from VIZ on the matter: “VIZ Media made the decision to stay consistent with the pricing in the marketplace for this industry, which in some cases might be a slight increase from previous years.”

One interesting note though: CWR says that Shonen Jump titles were $7.99, and Shojo Beat titles were $8.99-- presumably to try and make up for what is probably a smaller readership in most cases. Now they'll be priced the same at $9.99, even though the readership for Shojo titles may get even smaller with the closure of Shojo Beat.

...On the other hand, perhaps the price has been levelled out specifically to make the shojo titles more competitive with the shonen ones to the reader standing at the bookstore with a big pile wondering which desired manga to actually buy.

What say you, Vice? Do you think this might even out the amount of Shonen Jump/Shojo Beat titles that you buy? And will it make you cut back on the number of either?

This sorta blows... Like... Being able to buy a manga for under 10 with tax worked so well. Alot of Shounen Jump titles just arent worth 10 dollars. The shoujo beat titles could be i guess...

:( That kinda sucks because I have started read manga and I have over a hundred dollars on volumes as it is. With an increase price, I will have to be even more selective of what I buy.

@Kuro: Ohohoho, I always forget that some of you guys still pay sales tax, unlike we Oregonians! <3

Same here. I was going on a manga spree, but thats going to have to stop now. Thankfully a number of the series i buy are near their end or come out every three months rather than every two

Viz had the same standard as any other manga in Canada. :O
