Such are the circumstances of my evenings.
To convey what was trickier to bring up during the cocktail party… it’s hard to actually review anything related to DBZ with a straight face. I grew up on it, and so did a lot of you, and we all know that DBZ is in a world class of endearing ridiculousness. One of you lunatics described it best as the prime example of anime “preposterone," and my mind balks at imagining a better treatment the mega-series could receive for a box set. This is the gold-plated limo, friends.
I’m not one for explaining myself, but the backstory of this video puts our shenanigans in a more amusing context. When I got the box set in the mail from Funimation, several of my friends perked up when they saw it on my desk. “Episodes 210-250? That must have Boo in it, right?” They all asked the same question with the kind of excitement usually reserved for the Savage/Warrior match at SUMMERSLAM ’92. I don't know if kids today roll their eyes about DBZ like they do for the "cartoon era" of wrestling I love so much, but I crack to pieces whenever anybody just mentions names like Frieza and Cell.
So check out the ordering info for the set here. It isn't tightened or touched-up the way KAI is, but if you want your DBZ unfiltered, this is pure. Pure unto to the point of an entire episode being devoted to the Z fighters simply entering a tournament; so pure that the Japanese audio track has the warm sound quality of a wax record. Pure as Goku's fighting spirit.

Mayhaps the Ballz of the Dragon are sacred after all? A matter of opinion, I say. But what I more often enjoy saying? KAMEHAMEHA!
wait wut? Nigel pass the tea... the tea I say!
But what I want to know is: what were you guys really drinking?

Booze! Real Booze!
It's Buu, not Boo. I only point that out because you filed this article under the Boo page Tom, which I've deleted since it had nothing on it.
I'd enjoy these videos more if they filled the screen and had audio coming out of both speakers, but it was pretty funny. Though if you wanted it to be really entertaining, you guys should have got completely wasted and then filmed yourselves actually watching the box set. That would have been gold.
It's good to know FUNimation is still releasing Dragon Ball Z for those who want the original anime in it's entirety. I still think Kai is great though and has the best dub work I've ever heard. It's a real shame Kai doesn't cover the Buu saga.
Goddamn I love this video.
Reciting Goku's spirit bomb soliloquy in the form of a drinking toast? Friggin' ingenious.
I still don't understand the difference between those orange dvd sets I bought and these new ones.
I'm not buying this show again, dammit!
@csl316: It's definitely confusing at first, but if you want a detailed explanation of why, check out this awesome review over at Dizenshuu: http://www.daizex.com/general/reviews/dragonbox_dbz_1.shtml
There's a video cropping and re-mastering issue with the previous orange "brick" box-sets (forced 16:9 on 4:3 footage; poor "HD" filtering), but if you don't know about it already then it's probably not a problem for you. Enjoy the sets you have!
Basically, the Dragon Boxes (Z versions and otherwise) are DVD sets catered to the "hardcore" sub fans of the original Japanese version of the show (not to say anything bad about dub fans). There's an English dub on there, but it's a secondary track with the Japanese music. It's for fans of the original broadcast - fans of Shunsuke Kikuchi's wonderful music and the original VAs - as it was broadcast in Japan. Hell, there's even original episode previews and breaks on there. The box-sets are almost identical to the legendary/rare/expensive Japanese Dragon Box DVD sets (from back in 2004), with wonderful packaging and cool extras in the form of hardcover mini "guide" books in the set.
As a massive fan of both subbed Dragon Ball and Z, I really hope FUNimation gets the correct print masters from TOEI for Dragon Ball and does Dragon Boxes for those too, as well as the multiple TV specials. The blue Dragon Ball season sets do at least have a Japanese track with no weird cropping, but I want the second version of "Makafushigi Adobenchā" from the latter half of Dragon Ball, damnit!
/honestlynotcrazy ;)
I was once a huge craze fan of DBZ, then I grew up... I still recall every dam thing though.... Out of everything I would like to remember, history, math, and etc, instead I can recall every detail of DBZ...
I admit I laughed watching the video. Good job.
My favorites are the cuts where the glasses suddenly switch in their hands.
Regarding the fight between Goku and Vegeta in this part of the story. Originally, Toriyama wanted that fight to be between Goku and Piccolo. He was convinced by his editors to switch it to Vegeta since the fans were dying for one last fight between them.
@Newten:
I find that it's often that I'll write an article and never seems to get linked to the proper profiles. That Nolan North article I wrote links to the original Naruto anime. It should really be linked to Naruto Shippuden and Nolan North's profile.

But... but... but they spell it "Boo" in the DRAGON BOX's booklet!
Tech issues is something we're working on. You may have just given us an idea for a new video, too. It'll be like a Japanese game show.
