The UN's Committee on Elimination of Discrimination issued a report yesterday talking about how while Japan has made great strides in many ways, they remain slow on women's rights. THe report also featured severla pieces of advice, one of which was to enforce a legal ban on video games featuring rape and sexual violence.
We've talked about this many times, of course, and you all know that my personal stance is that it would be both ineffective and intrusive on peoples' rights, so I won't go back into the details. In the report's back-and-forth, several experts expressed concern about pornographic games, although neither the Asahi's report nor the one posted on the UN's site suggests any blanket bans on hentai or porn games overall.
Japan's delegation had these things to say, according to the report:
"Regarding pornography, the child pornography law was being strengthened. Animated pornography was not covered under that law."
"[The delegation] agreed that the problem of video games and the civic codes were of great concern and were now the subject of public discussion. They stressed that the advice and guidance of the Committee would be used for further progress in all areas."
So no cause for panic just yet-- I can't imagine Japan wanting to place a legal ban on the materials, since Japan's EOCS organization has placed a ban on the games that will limit their availability in stores. But if anything develops, you guys'll hear about it.
