Tuesday Toyday: Even Good Smile Company Hath Forsaken Me

Seriously, what's up lately?

It seems like figures that just feel “off” to me have been cropping up all over the place lately, and I can't figure out why. When I saw a Good Smile Company listing in my RSS reader a few minutes ago, I perked up immediately: GSC always puts out a good figure. Right?

...Right?

But either I'm just in a negative mindset or something is “off” with this Kagami Hiiragi from Lucky Star, in her PE uniform. The face seems a little off-- the only reason her eye looks closed is that it's drawn as such but you can't see it in the face shape, it could just as easily have been painted open. The hands and arms look a little too pudgy. Her slightly-open mouth looks a little odd...all of these little nitpicky things that I might have forgiven on their own add up to kind of a big mess of “meh.”

And here's the kicker-- the pricetag is ¥12,800, or $133 USD. Seriously!? If this was a $20 figure I might be able to justify how odd it looks, but $133?!

Is that just me? What do you think of this Kagami? They got the hair down good, I'll give them that!

I think she is overpriced and a fairly good looking figure. 1/4th scale would be the reason for the high price...

I really don't see what you think looks wrong on it Gia.... personally I think it looks dead-on. It looks just like Kyoani's rendering style of her to me.

And as for the price, look closely. If I'm not mistaken that's real cloth (granted that doesn't totally excuse the price tag, but it makes it a little more reasonable considering that's about how much the doll figures of the same size cost)

It Kagami, there no question, it got the vide and everything. But but the $133 USD, damn.

I'm not suggesting it doesn't look like Kagami, just that it doesn't look *good* @_@;

That said, Heero: I'm guessing it's probably cheaper to put cloth clothes on a figure than it is to hire a sculptor who's good with clothes. Making clothing look good in PVC or any plastic is *hard*.

I think Kagami looks pretty nice... but at over $130, she needs to look perfect.
HeeroYuyon May 19, 2009 at 5:23 p.m.
@gia: It may be cheaper to design them that way initially, but to assemble that and produce it I'd imagine makes the mass production much more expensive in the overall. All of a sudden you have to have to have more pieces for the mold so that it fits together without damaging the cloth, and then you have to have an entirely separate machine make the cloth clothing instead of just having one or two mold pieces. Of course, I have no clue exactly how the process works, but this is my hypothesis behind it.

And I think I see what you mean now (in response to your other comment), the cheek does look a bit weird, though hands in animation and figures never bothered me much unless they were absolutely horribly off.

Dig Deeper into Figures

A popular merchandise type in Japan is the "figure", which can be an action figure or a still figure, generally of an anime or manga character (although there are any number of original designs as well).
