Tuesday Toyday: But Strike Witches is A-OK

Toyday Part Deux: Strike Witches.

Of course, figures of the things I love dearly like Lucky Star and Gurren Lagann's Yoko come out all wonky, but it when it comes to fanservice lolicon bait series Strike Witches, well, nothing's too good for our pantsless anthropomorphic cat-witch-girls, am I right?

I'm not actually as bitter about it as I sound, but I do find it mildly irksome that this is such a nicely done figure-- the pose, the sculpting, the face, the painting, all pitch-perfect –and yet Kagami gets a super-expensive shaft-job, out of Good Smile Company even! Sigh. I couldn't find a complaint with this Yoshika Miyafuji figure if I tried. The hands are elegant. The gun and mech legs are detailed but not overdone. The eyes are lively. Siiiiigh!

At ¥7800 (about $81 USD), Alter's figure will be not affordable but not end-your-life expensive either. She's due out this September.

@kratos1010:  good luck finding it on sale. It's probably gonna truck unless it gets sold domestically overseas.

Already got mine preordered. =3 The price of that Kagami figure is ridiculous, though.

Personally I think you're being too critical of the Kagami figure...I think the problem is it sort of fell into an uncanny valley of representing the character as a 3D figure, but the problem I think also has somewhat to do with just how simple her character design is by comparison. There's not a lot of detail in her base design, so it's hard to judge (hell, half the time they don't even render her nose in the show).

This figure is extremely well done as well, although, I think what helps put it apart is just how unique a design and how much more deep the details are of the character to compare to.

I figure look great, I give out that but I'm not a fan of Strike Witches.

It's a nice figure, but it doesn't appeal to me too much seeing as I'm not the biggest Strike Witches fan. Good luck explaining to people what you're doing with that figure on your desk.

Heero: At risk of moving the conversation to the wrong thread-- I don't think it's just a matter of Kagami's design being less detailed that naturally results in figures not looking good. For example, I love this Kagami figure, which matches the KyoAni designs AND looks fantastic on its own. (Also this, this, and even this, by comparison.)

The other Kagami figure has an odd facial expression-- one that isn't matched by the way the face is shaped, when someone closes one eye they lift their cheek slightly at a minimum. Go ahead, try winking an eye or just closing one eye and not feeling your cheek lift at all. But the other figure doesn't show that at all, it literally could be the same face with both eyes open. I think the hands are too chunky (by contrast, the figure I linked above has "cartoony" fingers that don't look pudgy), which I think is another thing that's bothering me.

She actually has good trigger discipline. I approve.

Dig Deeper into Strike Witches

Based on Fumikane Shimade's "Mecha Musume" illustrations, the series revolves around moe girls who are anthropomorphic WWII-era planes.
