Tuesday is Toyday: Fantasy Warrior Women

This week: warriors in fluffy skirts.

Today I'm going to focus on two figures that popped up that bear some interesting thematic similarities, in spite of their vast differences. The first is Alter's 1/8-scale Saber Lily, featuring Fate/Stay Night's Saber decked out in silvery gear.
I'm reeeeally not a fan of the series, but it's a gorgeous sculpt, with a soft understated face to match the extravagant attire. I'm also impressed by the sword and scabbard, which are pretty intricately detailed. It looks like the kind of figure you'd shell out a hundred or so for, but it's actually the relatively inexpensive price of ¥7800, about $81 USD.

And then there's Nanoha Exceed Mode, also from Alter, a 1/7-scale featuring Nanoha striking a presumably deadly pose. Like Saber, she has some impressive duds, even if they're not quite as detailed and they're a little bit more over-the-top. I am impressed with the sculpt of the hair, though, and I dig that she's on a clear-plastic stand with extra boosts for her feet so it looks like she's flying. Or standing on crystal. Either way.
Nanoha clocks in at ¥12,800, about $132 USD, so between that and the fact that Fate/Stay Night seems a bit more popular than Nanoha here, I'm guessing most of you would buy the swordswoman over the magical girl. Still, they're both nice figures for collectors with the means.

Thoughts/feelings/rants/flames/opinions? Would you buy 'em or burn 'em?

I'd buy them both. I prefer the GSC Saber Lily. I like her face better and everything overall with GSC version. Saber's smile in the Alter version is completely un-Saber-like. It makes it look like she LOVES battling when she doesn't, she only does it out of necessity.

Btw: Nanoha figures are always overpriced to heck.

There was an awesome Saber figurine coming out a while ago but it was...expensive and I didn't have the money. Now the preorders for it are all gone at Play-Asia.

I'm not repeating the same mistake again, rather I intend to make a completely new one by spending a bunch of cash at this. It' s a bit more affordable to.

While I'm at it, does anyone know another good place to order these things from besides Play-Asia (that ships internationally)? They're great and all but don't always carry everything I want. (by which I mean Kamen Rider related stuff)

@RockmanBionics: Hobby Stock (http://www.1999.co.jp/eng) is a good place :)

The Saber figure is really beautiful. Did you notice the detailing of her bare back? That's pretty amazing. Places to buy figures? Without knowing how good they are or not, there is hobbyfan dot com and toyslogic dot com that are both fun to virtual window shop at.

Yea, Hobby Search is a good place. HLJ is another one (hlj.com).
I already tapped out for GSC's Saber, so I think Alter kind of got beat on that one (although this Saber is just as good IMO, regardless of how you feel about her facial expression).

Same for Nanoha, for that matter. Those expensive Fate kits are expensive :(

That Saber Figure is awesome, but as always all I can do is window shop because I'm poor:(

@omo: HLJ always seems to be out of stock faster. I like 1999 because they don't sell out as fast...because they share stock with what they're selling in Japan, I think.

I like Saber's expression though. It's very gentle.

I really like that Saber. It's a really nice outfit.

Saber look amazing

@lanaswift: 1999 has ghetto user interface and e-commerce portal though. Whatever suits your boat really. I'm just slightly biased because I've met some of the HLJ guys and have done more business that way.

Don't forget 1999 is EMS only meaning you will pay more for shipping than you would from HLJ. I've ordered from both places, and they are both good, I just prefer the cheaper shipping over the minor point-based discounts. That said, HLJ usually doesn't open the pre-orders for stuff until it gets closer to the release date. On topic, I actually like the Alter version of Saber better than the Good Smile one, but I don't really have the space / spare funds for either one.

@Void_Wizard: I just like the fact that she's SMILING in this one... all the other Saber figures that look good enough for me to care to buy are all of her serious side (exception being the Holiday one from Ataraxia)

Though I'd get the GSC one in a heartbeat if I could afford it atm. It's so awesome I can only describe it as hot...

EMS is much safer then any other shipping method(it is the only one that includes tracking) to pick any other method is akin to setting yourself up for a disaster of tremendous proportions. So no HLJ and 1999 have the same shipping price if the intelligent person chooses EMS and not another dodgy shipping method.

Edit: Lol wtf I double quoted...
lanaswifton June 16, 2009 at 8:33 p.m.
@omo: I don't mind HLJ, but I've never had trouble with 1999 either. At least they're both better than ToysLogic.
