Tuesday is Toyday 02/10/09: Mega Hobby!

A collection of some of the coolest figures from the last week.

Japan is full of delicious figure festas, and the current of these events is Mega Hobby Expo, running this very day in Japan. So! Let's talk about a few Mega Hobby shots, shall we?

Danny Choo provides this delicious shot of
Gurren Lagann's Yoko in cowgirl attire. I'm not totally thrilled with her mouth, but the look of determination on her face is more than awesome enough to make up for it, if you ask me. The badass outfit doesn't hurt, either, amirite?

Then there's this new series of Idolmaster figures. Now, I don't mind the overall design of these cuties, but the execution seems pretty mediocre. And then, something seems a little maybe the heads are slightly disproportionate to the rest of the bodies. Especially the one pictured right here.

Yagyuu Juubei

Let's move into some original works, shall we? Alter has a new line of moe-fied versions of traditional Japanese swordsmen, such as Yagyuu Juubei (pictured here) and Sanada Yukimura. This concept isn't entirely unfamiliar to us-- after all, Yagyuu Juubei is the swordsman who eventually became the subject of Jubei-chan: Secret of the
Ranka Lee

Lovely Eyepatch. (God, that show was awesome.) The line is called Hyakka Ryoran.

But oh, we're not done yet! How about an angelic, pre-wardrobe malfunction Ranka Lee? I come down on the Sheryl Nome side of the Macross F debate in the general run of things, but I have to admit, I love her cute little wings. Even if, Did anyone consider telling Megahouse that Ranka's hair is green?

Doubtless we'll see tons more from Mega Hobby over the next day or so, so stay tuned and I'll keep posting the awesomest ones.

The Yoko is by far my favorite out of this bunch. Really awesome design.

And really, how'd they miss the green in Ranka's hair? Possible color variant?

Niko, it is a little greenish-tinted on one side...kind of odd, but maybe they're pretending it's a lighting thing within the fictional 'scene' she's in?

Future lighting that turns all green-haired people into blonds.

But I would prefer a Sheryl figure. I also liked her more than Ranka.

That Yoko figure is pretty awesome and the others I find the others to be bad(except Jubei), especially the Idolmaster one.

Sonata: That figure's not actually from the anime; it's a different design-- but the show and the figure use the same historic figure (who was a dude) to base the concept on. :)

Dig Deeper into Figures

A popular merchandise type in Japan is the "figure", which can be an action figure or a still figure, generally of an anime or manga character (although there are any number of original designs as well).
