Torture Porn! Get Yer Hot Torture Porn!

Don't say I didn't warn you!...

Does the thought of girls being stabbed, stuck with needles, chained to walls, and then set free to kick your ass appeal to you? Good news, then! FUNimation's latest acquisition is Mnemosyne no Musume-tachi, also known as RIN: Daughters of Mnemosyne.

Named for the Greek goddess Mnemosyne, goddess of memory and mother of the nine muses, the Xebec/Genco collaboration is a six-episode* TV special based on Hiroshi Ounogi and Chuuou Higashiguchi's light novels. The story revolves around a pair of (seemingly) young women who are actually immortals and who run a detective agency. Although the two-- leader Rin Asougi and the child-only-in-appearance Mimi –attempt to lead relatively normal lives, their cases always lead them back to their dark pasts and their unusually immortal existences.

It's a pretty cool show before you add in the gore, which is more than enough to potentially make or break the show for you (depending on whether you like sexually-charged torture in your anime or not). If you're not sure, it's well worth giving a shot...just don't bother if you've got a weak stomach.

* EDIT: Just heard back-- the original Japanese version was six double-length episodes, which have been split into 12 regular-length episodes for the release.

maybe funi are adding their own episodes :P, but seriously funi seem to be getting confident, usually us companies stay away from shit like this, in my experience anyway

Hmm...I dunno, Media Blasters has generally been willing to push the envelope, probably because they already sell a lot of actual hentai anyway. I always figured Mnemosyne would be picked up by them.

That said, FUNi did pick up Claymore and Shigurui, which are also both pretty violent.

oh ye i suppose media blasters, but up till this christmas funi was pretty clean as far as the genre's they picked up
giaon Feb. 20, 2009 at 4:14 p.m.
I dunno...DBZ was relatively rather violent at the time, even if they didn't release the uncut versions for a while. And then of course there's Witchblade, and they were involved in the creation of Afro Samurai...I think they're mostly just following the way anime in general and anime fans are going, more than the company itself is changing.

That picture makes the gal in the lower left hand corner have weird boob physics/placement.
It's the truth. Just saying.

RedRoses: Haha, yes, that's what I thought as soon as I saw it XD
Bertmastaon Feb. 20, 2009 at 4:17 p.m.
gore porn is a bit more extreme than previous funi titles tho i mean come on xD
giaon Feb. 20, 2009 at 4:31 p.m.
Well, it's not like it's out-and-out guro or anything-- it's not REALLY porn. I just meant it's gratuitous. ;)
Bertmastaon Feb. 20, 2009 at 4:32 p.m.
ok my bad, im not familiar with it anyway :P
Black_Roseon Feb. 20, 2009 at 4:38 p.m.
Ehh...not my thing
omoon Feb. 20, 2009 at 5:22 p.m.
Only the first episode has that...scene that makes me shiver. The rest isn't so bad.

But this is a very good 90s-style anime OAV made recently, if that's your thing. I will pick it up for sure.

The 12-episode thing is kind of odd. Why did they say it's 12 when they didn't have to?
giaon Feb. 20, 2009 at 6:38 p.m.
omo: I don't fully understand that either, unless the Japanese DVDs came out that way. And I don't know why they would do that, either.
