Topless Rei Beats Collarbone Yuki on Price of Art Cells

Full with talk of boobs and breasts

It looks kinda like this, but with blue hair and more boobs.
It looks kinda like this, but with blue hair and more boobs.
Isn't that just the way of things? Not only do real life women muscle their way through things with their breasts, but apparently the animated ones do too. Though they're a little outdated these days, the art cells for animated features are still a fun collectible for the serious fan.

Though, they can be a pot shot of value. Like, a zoomed cell on the back of Shinji's head won't be "worth" much, but get one from the topless Rei Ayanami scene and you're in business... apparently. The infamous "Shinji accidently fondles Rei in a towel" scene had a cell which sold for ¥403,000 (roughly $4,500.)

Comparing and contrasting

The news of this sale comes hot on the recent Yuki collarbone cell (pictured above) from the Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya. While it fetched a trivial 356,000 ($3,900,) at least there I read character. The cell comes from a what looks to be a gripping moment where the similarly cold Yuki shows a very uncharacteristic, large facial expression. What does the Rei panel have? A left boob angled into an emotionless shot? Not like I'm the buyer who drops thousands of dollars on such things, but shesh.

Besides, from what I hear the right one is better.

 $500?
 $500?
 $6,000?
 $6,000?
The same film (the Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya) also produced another semi-scandalous cell, of Haruhi in the process of stripping. However, this sexualized sequence didn't skyrocket the value, as fans found themselves only willing to drop ¥45,500 ($490.) On the other hand, Fate Tesserosa from Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha garnered the top prize, at 532,000 Yen! Despite being nothing more than an innocuously smile, these thumbnails of animation cost someone $5,800.

Well, I'm know I'm one of them, but us fans are anything but logical.

uh...can't you just pause it on that frame on your computer, do a printscreen and print it?

There's always someone out there that, for some reason, finds it worth the time and money to collect such things.

But really, $5800? I can only dream of all of the DVDs, manga and games that much will buy. D:

And I thought spending more than a hundred bucks for a figure was too much. Otaku always push the envelope on collectibles.

Wow with the Fate Tesserossa and Rei cells I would have almost enough cash for tuition and rent for next year. :O

I can see paying a lot for cell if you're going to hang it in your house as like, a legit work of art.  And if the cell actually LOOKS like a work of art - that Rei cell is pretty lame.  The Yuki one is definitely a lot more dynamic, though I don't think I'd want to display anything quite so rapey publicly in my home or office (I know that's not what's actually happening in the scene, given that those are Kyon's hands, but come on).

And yeah, if you're not going to hang it, screencaps are cheap as free!

Alternatively, you can buy those cheap LCD picture frames (several of them) and mount those, digitally displaying said photos.

Kyon wakes up one morning and suddenly finds himself in a world where the SOS Brigade doesn't exist. Haruhi is gone, and neither Mikuru or Nagato recognize him.
