Tons of new licenses announced at this year's Otakon

New goodies from FUNimation, Bandai, ANiplex and more

If you attended Otakon this weekend in Baltimore (along with the 28,000 other people) , you know it was a total fan festival of cosplay, shopping, live concerts and more, all geared for the otaku brain. However, if you were paying attention and made it to a few key industry panels, you likely heard about some pretty major licensing announcements as quite a few were made. I managed to make it to a few, and I have some exciting new announcements for you!

From Bandai, we can look forward to Girl Who Leapt Through Space, My-Otome 0 ~S.ifr~, and A Record of the Strange Tales of the Bakumatsu Era: Code Geass. FUNimation will be bringing us Strike Witches 2, Girls Bravo, Hetalia World Series, Shukufuku no Campanella Summer Wars, Okami-san to Shichinin no Takama-tachi (shortened to Okamisan for US release) in the way of series and also a few movies too: Evangelion 2.0: You Can (Not) Advance, Ginmaku Hetalia Access Powers: Paint it White [Shiroku Nure!].

Aniplex also announced Durarara!! and a full English voice cast coming in January of next year.

Which of these are you all geared up to buy? I think Durarara!! is a must for me, as it was easily one of my favorite shows of this year.

I'll take all of what Bandai's offering, and perhaps Durarara! I kept telling myself that I would only buy My-Otome Zwei if I could get ~S.ifr~ along with it, and not a moment sooner.

(Why, yes, I AM a Mai-HiME fan...what gave you that idea?)

FUNimation is already streaming the dubbed version of Hetalia, and I was not impressed. But Girl Bravo and Durarara!! look to be winners. Is it just me, or are things leaning more towards fluffy? I have to wonder, also, which ones channels like AS and AnimeNetwork will pick up.

Bandai - All I care about was the announcement of Stephanie Sheh as Yui and Cristina Vee as Mio.
Funimation - Strike witches 2, All seasons and movie(WTF) of Hetalia, Okamisan (a bit), and
Evangelion 2.0: You Can (Not) Advance! Good job Funi.
Aniplex - English voice cast for Durarara!! looks good.

I'm anticipating great things from the Evangelion movie.  My expectations for the rest of announced shows are pretty low though.

Durarara! Cool!
I want to watch the Evangelion movies... how many are out so far?

@YuiAsakawa: You went to Otakon? did you take any pictures?
InfiniteGeasson Aug. 3, 2010 at 10:13 a.m.
I got excited for the announcement of Cristina Vee as Mio for the K-On dub. I think that's a pretty good choice for the character. I don't know much about anything else, so I can't really comment on it.

I'm definitely going to be picking up Durarara.

This...this show is on my to watch list and I will be watching it after I knock out several other shows.

Okamisan is my buy from this list as I already have Girls Bravo. Shukufuku is meh right now as I have no idea where the story is going.

You missed the best one: Summer Wars from Funimation

I want to know more about  A Record of the Strange Tales of the Bakumatsu Era: Code Geass.

Uh, I thought Girls Bravo was licensed years ago? They even dubbed the whole two seasons and released them to DVD.

Is that Code Geass series the one that hasn't been released yet, or some other series?
choujin1on Aug. 3, 2010 at 1:58 p.m.
I'll have to wait and see on most of them, since I'm unfamiliar with them, but Durarara!! and Eva 2.0 will be on my "to buy list".
CrazyCanuckon Aug. 3, 2010 at 2:03 p.m.
Did you hear that?.... yeah that..... It's my savings account shaking in fear
GenkiShonenon Aug. 3, 2010 at 3 p.m.
Personally I'm excited that Funimation licensed  Strike Witches 2.
MetalGearFlaccidon Aug. 3, 2010 at 3:03 p.m.
Can someone tell me why Funimation hasn't even tried to license the rest of Higurashi? Even though I watched the series before in illegitimate channels, I gladly bought it on DVD when it came out. I don't want to have to resort to piracy when it come to Kai and Rei, but that's the only option they are giving me right now.

And don't even get me started on my desire for Umineko to be licensed.

This this this. I'm so excited about Summer Wars. That and Eva 2.22 were two of the things I was most hoping to see licensed, so I completely fangirled-out this weekend. I'll probably get the Hetalia stuff as well since I seem to have a weakness for bishonen-style history.
tainteddonuton Aug. 3, 2010 at 5:20 p.m.
Bandai hasn't had anything that interested me in a very long time. Sadly the trend still continues.

Funimation on the other hand will be getting my money for Evangelion 2.0 and Summer Wars when those come out. I picked up Girl Bravo on DVD long ago so I'll pass on Funi's rerelease.

I've been watching Durarara on Crunchyroll and I'm fairly certain I'll be picking it up when Aniplex releases it. Aniplex also announced they're releasing all of Read or Die (TV and OVA) in a blu-ray box set this year. Although I own it all on DVD, I'm tempted to double dip and get it again.

Yeah...can't believe you missed Summer Wars. -10 credibility and professionalism. The thing won a freakin' equiv. of an Academy Award in Japan last year.

Summer Wars, for those who haven't seen it...is amazing. Fantastic film for all audiences. Really relavent in today's time too. Definite buy for me. I could kinda care less about the rest.
