TOKYOPOP Pops Up Manga Prices

It looks like TOKYOPOP's new years resolution is to bump up their manga prices.

Fruits Basket

The new year is coming, and with the new year occasionally come new prices. A sharp-eyed Anime on DVD forum member spotted that some of Tpop's manga titles are going up in price by a buck, from $9.99 to $10.99.

Now, it's hard to get too upset: Tpop has held out the $9.99 price for longer than many publishers; Del Rey, Yen, Go! Comi, Media Blasters, and most of the others have been in the $10.99-12.99 range. VIZ, of course, manages to keep some titles as low as $7.95-- or in the case of the wordless Gon, $5.99. And not all of Tokyopop's titles are going up; as far as I can tell, Fruits Basket #22 (due out March 17 2009) is going to stay at $9.99.

Unless they have decided to put the color inserts in the mangas, if not, then what is the reason for the price increase?  The faltering American and Global economy?  I have purchased the mangas with the color inserts yet  it doesn't change the overall presentation of the book.  The only thing that changed was the pricing from $9.99 to $12.99.

That really saddens me.

Well this means I can use my 30% off coupon on any item over $10 at borders.

I'm a little surprised to see anybody raising prices given the current state of the U.S. economy, but I suppose $10.99 is still fairly competitive.
I don't really have much of a personal issue with it... Fruits Basket is the last Tokyopop title I'm collecting.

OK so talking about price changing... I was on amazon.com and i saw that the new Tsubasa : Those with wings book by Natsuki Takaya is $14.99!!!! O_o  Its coming out in march.. and i say thats a huge price change from other tokyopop books!... ok.. yeah it does have 380 pages but still... i think it sucks that if i wanna buy that book since im a huge fan, im going to be forking over alomost $20 since the tax in my county is 10%!      T.T

jcmex84—"Tsubasa: Those with wings" books are basically two volumes of the Japanese manga published in one volume in English. If you think of it as buying what would normally be two volumes of manga ($20 plus tax) for $15, it's more like a 25% discount off the "normal" price.  So it's actually a good deal.  The $15 price is pretty standard for the two-in-one volumes TP has been releasing lately, like Tsuda Masami's one-shot collection Castle of Dreams, which was also two separate books when released in Japan.
The thing I'm confused with about this price change is that, as far as I can see on amazon, the change isn't consistent: for example, Love Attack 6 is priced at 10.99, but the following volume, Love Attack 7, still says 9.99.  Unless they're still in the process of updating all the prices...
