Tokyo Votes to Erase Children From Anime Later This Month

This could go down.

 Good bye!
 Good bye!
Remember a week and some days ago when I told you about a proposed legislation that might remove or censor any character that looks under the age of 18 and is the cause of lust? Well, it looks as if the Tokyo legislators are taking it a step forward and actually voting on the 19th of March to get this made into a law. If it makes it out of the committee, then it will be voted on by the entire assembly on the 30th; and if it passes then it could take effect as early as October 1.

In response to this law, the “nonexistent youths” of today are rejoicing, stating that finally they can live a normal life within their manga and anime universes without the worry of random sex scenes or the daily bath with brother. “I am just glad that someone is finally thinking about our fictional welfare, and not things like plummeting birth rate or North mother flipping Korea.” said one such loli. Though the cast of Strike Witches does not appear to be celebrating, for their entire existence might be erased from history.

We can do nothing more than wait for March 19 to arrive.

Wow, that's...actually pretty big news for Japan.

Assuming it gets passed, not that many things get passed into law there.

The way I interpreted ANN's article on the topic and being able to get a translation on the source they got the news from, it looks like it's only Tokyo Prefecture that this legislation would effect if passed into law.

Here's a link to the blog article translated into English via Google.

yes all of otaku will move faraway from tokyo
Dreamon March 9, 2010 at 7:29 p.m.
@cfatalis:  Which would no doubt cripple Akihabara financially if the otaku fanbase steer clear of Tokyo. XD
ganchanon March 9, 2010 at 7:39 p.m.
I guess that means there will never be another series like...oh...Azumanga Daioh.  I can't think of ANY of the female characters on that show that hasn't got somebody who lusts after them.  Except maybe, MAYBE, Kimura's daughter.

What are the odds of this law actually passing this in to law? I don't know  much about jappanies politics but I imagine it will be hard to pass a law on fictional characters and that will restrict an industry that is a good chuck of the economy.

HUZAH! SOME ONE FINALLY AGREES WITH ME ABOUT SOMETHING!

Think about it this way.

Doesn't Pass: nothing changes but people are a little more reasonable.

Passes: people are crazy, however they will actually have to make different shows instead of the same old shit.
crusader8463on March 9, 2010 at 10:54 p.m.
@darkcyder: While it is true that i would to see a lot less moe school kid crap getting made, but the part about this that pisses me off is what it says about one of my all time favorite Anime. Under this law they are saying that Please Teacher!, which i believe to be one of if not the greatest and most moving love stories i have ever had the please of watching, is wrong and that it should never have been made. That's the part about this that gets me pissed off.

I'm really liberal but damn I find the sexualisation of little girls sick so I'm not complaining.

Got to say. I think that since this law has gone this far. It may actually pass. I can't see why their law makers would actually vote no against it. How do you explain that to your voters saying no on something like this?

Just under the age of 18 is pretty much the hallmark of many anime and manga series. A lot involve characters who are in highschool. It's really the target market. Just look at Code Geass. Those character's didn't start out 18 and a lot of fan service scenes were made of Kallen and C.C. Not to forget Nina's famous Table Love scene. What about characters who only look underage but are older?

Then you have the problem of how you define "lustful". A lot of different things are seen as lustful to different people. Sort of like when laws are made involving indecency. Who is deciding what is indecent?

Something like this could probably hurt a major portion of the economy in anime publication. A lot of animes are often based on manga. What if a manga creator wants to make such a character? Are people want to buy the anime is that character is no longer present or is suddenly blurred out every time they are on camera?
RockmanBionicson March 9, 2010 at 11:36 p.m.
I'm all for it, just because it would be fun to see what the effects of it are going to be. Wouldn't be that funny in the long run I suppose but hey, live is all about doing cool stuff that you'll regret later.

i just don't get why they seem to think they need to go through so much to protect people from pixels on a screen. I do question that even if it passes, who decides if a character looks under 18 and under what criteria? I'd laugh if there were some stereotypical older Japanese woman that looks to be in high school on that panel.

Honestly, when you think about it, such a ban could really put a hit on Tokyo financially. Suddenly banning half of the anime market wouldn't go over well. At all.
