TOKYO MAJIN #1 - - Special Review

Whoa! Slow down there, hot shot!

Yikes! This pilot is all over the place. I kept checking the episode number to make sure I wasn’t actually watching episode #12, because the plotting of this seriously had the sort of busyness I’d expect from the mid-point of a show - - not the beginning. Look, I’m all for starting things in media res and hitting high gear as soon as possible, but you’ve got to give your characters at least some introduction.

Perhaps this show’s just taking for granted that I’m familiar with all the tropes its playing with or the shows its alluding to. In the chaos, I picked up on premise that I was quite interested in - - anti-social high school delinquents kicking the crap out of ghouls and ghosts. That’d make this seem like an edgier, older-skewing YU YU HAKUSHO, and perhaps that’s exactly the intention. Perhaps this is riffing on a whole host of other shows, and I’m just not catching the references?

Again, I’m kind of at a loss over what to comment on here. A lot of cool shit happened, but I was never quite clear on how it was all connecting together. I really hate to be the lame-o asking for everybody to slow down and offer explanations, but this really seemed like some sugar-pumped kid cannonballing into a ball pit before he’s said “Hi” to anybody at the birthday party. Certainly, I can appreciate the enthusiasm and the youthful haste - - but you’ve still got to take two minutes to get few thing squared before you get to the fun stuff.

If anything, this pilot goes to show that there's excess in any positive quality of storytelling. A quickly-paced, jugular-grabbing opener can very easily feel rushed and overstuffed if the creative people get too carried away.

Watch this episode, "Moment of the Demonic Encounter" here and decide for yourself.

Tried twice now to get into this series.Animations prety good.Just feels like a dues ex machina set up coming.i dont mind plots where we get front loaded with action an subplots but then get more info as we go along. But i requirs a bit of want to get to that part.

Defect here is me not wanting to go further or them for not makeing me want more.Hopefuly 3rd try is a charm :/

Yeah, this is one of those shows that is trying to be like the more popular series. Also an example of being too front loaded and not being paced out. This is the reason why I complain to you Tom about dropping shows too quickly is because there're more shows that front load too much.

This is one of those shows that broke me on the powering through aspect. I was confused but interested, then after a few more episodes I was seriously skimming. I don't remember much about the show so that sums up my opinion of it.

As I mentioned above, I am on the side of people who believe that bad writing at the beginning is not worth good writing at the end.

Um well seems im theonly one so far who actually watched the whole thing soo..yes i too was a bit confused at the start. It skips ahead for some unknown reason and then the next episodes come back where it really should have started from. everyones introduction and how they got the power.

Um cool fights the story however just a tad bit hmm how do i put this..not well thought out? its a little confusing with the characters they just throw in sometimes. But overall i thought it was a pretty decent anime. didnt care for the ending however.
