Time Again To Pick The Next Watch & Learn And Submit Questions For Videos

I'm not kidding!

I'm just dying to watch what happens next. Are you?
I'm just dying to watch what happens next. Are you?

I’ve got to think of a proper name to identify these little community-minded updates about my features. Some users have asked me to put these in a flashier place since they usually tend to get lost in the feed, so I’m grouping everything here in a handy and concise post.

Anyway, with CLAYMORE finished and TIGER & BUNNY and MUSHI-SHI very nearly approaching completion, it’s time once again to pick some new series for WATCH & LEARN. Of the pilots I’ve recently reviewed, here are the videos on the ones I’m most interested in continuing…

I’m also tempted to include SACRED SEVEN since it's currently airing on Hulu and hasn’t finished yet . I feel it’s important to strike a balance between new, currently-unfolding series and finished ones that fans have already formed strong opinions about, and I did very much enjoy the immediacy of viewing TIGER & BUNNY without any preconceptions. Thus, I’ll keep this talkback open to suggestions of new, legally-streaming anime shows. While we’re at it, if there are any shorter series (around 10 episodes or less) you want me to watch, go on and suggest those, too. After watching long form series for so long, I do feel like taking a break with some briefer ones.

It’d really be too complicated to wait until I got all the titles and then set up a poll, so I’m just going to leave the talkback open to all votes and suggestions. It may amount to some messy chaos, but I’ll sort through it all, I guarantee.

For the other matter of business, these are the shows currently on the docket for video review.

Offer up any questions you’d like me to address. I still have all your previous Q's in mind, but don't let that stop you from tossing some new ones up. As you've seen, I will answer them.

For a shorter series, I'll throw up Afro Samurai again. Never seen any of the shows you mentioned except for Sacred Seven. It's alright. I'll be interested in hearing your thoughts on Yu-Yu-Hakusho though.

FoxxFireArt moderator on Sept. 22, 2011 at 12:54 p.m.

Soul Eater is back on both HULU and Youtube from FUNimation. I haven't seen any of the series listed, but the only one I'm really even semi-interested in is Baka and Test. I'm certainly all for Okamisan.

Yu-Yu Hakusho is incredibly long. I couldn't really get into Tiger & Bunny, because HULU was having issues with subtitles not appearing during conversations. I tried the first episode, and haven't gone back to it since.

I would still like to see some of the Shonen Trilogy (One Piece/BLEACH/Naruto) series added to this. If just one story arc. Not involving any of these series is almost like Comic Vine not talking about what's going on in Batman or X-Men.

As far as questions. It's hard to think of any questions to ask about shows I've never watched.

buhssuhton Sept. 22, 2011 at 1:35 p.m.

For Yu Yu Hakusho, do you think the whole was something that was only good in 90's or do you think it has something to hook new people from today?

Also have you noticed how the show just drop the whole "spirit detective" and went shonen route of tournament fight?

Makoto_Mizuhara_Sakamotoon Sept. 22, 2011 at 2:29 p.m.

How about this- you only did one episode of Slayers a while back... granted it was JUST the first one, but only the one. PLUS, with Defense of the Ancients 2 on the horizon, it'd be good to take a look at the series that featured the inspiration for one of the more over-powered characters in-game, don'tcha think?

metalsnakezeroon Sept. 22, 2011 at 2:50 p.m.

I don't recommend Sacred seven, it is mostly a train wreak. Casshern sins and Ge-rei-zero i would like you to do from the list. as for something that isn't on the list, Eden of the east. i know the first episode turn you off a bit but trust me just keep watching. the only problem with the series is that you'll need to watch the eleven episodes and the two movies in-order to understand it, which is a bit of a pain. however, it makes great use of its screen time and helps drive the meaning of the show.

Also Usagi Drop (Bunny Drop). Give it a first episode look and see how you like it.

So my question is, from the shows that you dropped watching do you conceded them to be bad or just not interesting to you and only to those who are in to the series?

I just wanted to clear something about it with you, thats all.

I want you to do Baka & Test

gla55jAwon Sept. 22, 2011 at 3:44 p.m.

It's been a while since I've had time to watch any anime (and come to AV for that matter). Last night I was just about to start Mushi-shi seeing that it is on Netflix, but I ultimately decided to finally put in my Eden of the East Blu Ray and started that (interesting so far). Good to know that when I'm ready for Mushi-shi I can go back to the Watch and Learn on it.

That being said, I'd be into going back into Peach Maker Kurogane. I watched it a few years back because I read that it had another version Saito Hajime in it and I wanted to see how he was different from the Rurouni Kenshin version. From what I can remember I enjoyed it.

Speaking of Rurouni Kenshin, Tom, have you seen Rurouni Kenshin (Samurai X): Trust & Betrayal? It's a 4 episode prequel OVA of Rurouni Kenshin and the Director's Cut makes it one film. It is amazing and I'd be interested in seeing what you thought.

Baka and Test is sort of a strange case- as it gets better and better- circling deeper and deeper down into the sea of social stigma's, military strategy, romantic comedy, and idiocy.

At the same time- I'm not sure entirely what the goal of this article series is- to drill into that core subject matter - the material - or to draw greater conclusions and concepts- spreading wider and wider into different topics.

Moribito is an excellent series that is free on youtube and hulu. Deserves way more popularity than it got.

It holds up really well if only for the stellar dub and surprisingly well-aged action. It has a sort of grit to it that few shows can match

Ga Rei Zero and Baka and Test are the ones you want. First is a very good show I didn't seem coming. Second is just plain hilarious!
Darokion Sept. 22, 2011 at 9:23 p.m.

I keep thinking I need to see Ga Rei Zero, watching along should be pretty fun. I really liked Baka and Test, but haven't hard the requisite break to jump into the second season that's finishing up right now. I think I saw the first season of B&T is also on Netflix streaming for those that have that option too.

Dunchadon Sept. 22, 2011 at 11:26 p.m.

@Tom_Pinchuk:

Honestly, I can't recommend any of those. I checked Hulu again quickly to see if there was anything good available - did you ever go back to Samurai Champloo? I think you watched the pilot a long while back, but I can't remember if you ever watched more of it. Seems like it's fully available on Hulu subbed and it's definitely one of those shows everyone should watch.

sotyfan16on Sept. 23, 2011 at 4:22 a.m.

Baka and Test and Ga Rei Zero are both shorter series. I think you'd like them, though you've already said so. I'm watching Baka and Test on Instant Watch right now (literally) and having fun with it. But for other series to check out, how about Sekirei, Needless, Witchblade, Speed Grapher, Okamisan, and Rainbow. Only two of them are half-length but they are all interesting their own way and all available on Hulu. I have a Dunce Cap for Witchblade and Sekirei (these links are to them, not the shows like the ones above).

yllekkramon Sept. 23, 2011 at 10:28 a.m.

I second the recommendation for Eureka Seven. It's a bit long, at 50 episodes, but I think it makes good use of that time. It's available on Crunchyroll.
