The Top Ten Gifts on Every Otaku’s List

Ten things we all beg for, but will probably never get.

10. Berserk Second Season/Ending/Two More Arms for Kentaro Miura

Something needs to happen with Berserk or I’ll explode. What I would love more than anything would be a second season to the original anime. Yes, they kind of shot themselves in the foot by emitting things like the Skull Knight, but I’m sure they can sort of write him in and make it work; it can’t be too hard. If we can’t do that, perhaps if we give Kentaro Miura an extra pair of arms he would be able to draw faster, and release more chapters to Berserk, so that we can finally get an ending.

9. Don’t Wait For the Big Three to End, Give Us Another Amazing Shonen Show

I have realized after a while now that Shonen Jump has not put out another amazing long, drawn out Shonen Story that will last until the end of the decade; and it’s not this decade that I’m talking about. Naruto, One Piece, and Bleach have stood alone on their high pedestal for a while now. Just like any super sentai team, there needs to be a new ranger to throw off the balance and make things interesting again.

So what would I like Shonen Jump to do next? Well ninjas, pirates, shinigami, gangsters, and spirit detectives are spoken for, so what else can they do? Knights would be pretty cool, Lumberjacks, or some kind of adult Pokemon type of thing, that would rock!

8. Erase Dragon Ball GT, Make Another Season

Might look something like this, but with more hair
Might look something like this, but with more hair
What I believe we would all love more than any present under the Christmas tree would be if Toriyama would just one day get up and erase the presence of GT from cannon by creating another Dragon Ball series. Good bye small Goku, good bye useless trunks, gohan, and goten, and hello Goku super saiyan 8 fighting the Anti-Spiral. The only thing we would miss would be Vegeta with a mustache.

7. Better Video Games

Anime is great, no doubt about it. But their video games on the other hand are usually not Game of the Year, or Game of the Month for that matter. Anime can have better video games, that’s the funny part; the only thing that is holding them back is the idea that the video game developers can make a game only just good enough for it to sell, and not make it everything it could be.

Squaresoft, are you afraid that the next Final Fantasy story might not be all that? (Word on the street is that it sucks) Well, just just take Hunter X Hunter’s story, and it will make millions. Seriously, why hasn’t Shonen Jump made some kind of Super Shonen Jump Wars video game yet?

6. No More Filler

Sorry Bount that!
Sorry Bount that!
In five hundred years when future man looks back at our generation, they will see it was the filler that killed Naruto. “Scholars say Naruto was looking great, until it the never-ending season of filler.” they would say. “It utterly destroyed all momentum the series was building. Some state it was the saddest event to happen within the century.”

Don’t get me wrong, some filler is good, and some of it is actually great! Like the current Bleach filler for example. Now I understand why filler exists, if there were no filler, all anime would have to air after the anime has finished, which would be rage inducing for series that take years to end. Though on the other hand, the end of fillers would be orgasmic.

5. Transform Classic Western Movies into Anime

Imagine waking up Christmas morning, turning on the computer and finding out that Gainax will be making an anime adaption of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, imagine how amazing that would be, and how hard you would be playing the air guitar. Yes, Japan doesn’t care about us, we all know making things from the west are frowned upon, but still it wouldn’t be the first time. If they can make an anime based off of Witchblade and it does ok, then an anime based off of Blade Runner would sell millions.

4. Giant Robot Statues Everywhere

The life-sized Gundam statue was a step in the right direction, and so was Tetsujin 28-go, but wouldn’t it be awesome if every city in Japan decided that they too had to construct a giant robot? If Japan wants to attract tourists, what better way than to create a super awesome tour consisting of visiting the Gunbuster statue, the Mazinger statue, the Getter Robo statue, the Gurren Lagann statue, the Optimus Prime statue, and the Voltes V statue. A giant robot for every corner, a giant robot for every street--the giant robot project will save Japan!

3. Give Anime it’s Own Sovereign Nation

Having a giant robot on every street is great and everything, but wouldn’t it be cool if anime had it’s own sovereign nation? Build an island, put all the animation companies on it, throw in a bunch of museums, some anime churches, it’s own convention hall and there you go. Think about it, anime is sort of like a religion, and if the vatican can get its own country, then why not anime? A completely self sufficient society that holds its own conventions, its own concerts, has its own merchandise--how can this not work?

2. Resurrect the Classics

MORE!
MORE!
Some say that remakes are the cancer that is killing anime today, because nothing is original anymore. That may be true, but it would also do the anime world good for them to bring back more Giant Robo, more JoJo anime, remake Legend of the Galactic Heroes; as the saying goes, don’t fix what’s not broken. There are tons of franchises that anime companies can return to, either making a sequel to said franchise, or just remaking it with super snazzy special effects. Nothing says Christmas better than Cowboy Bebop 2.

1. Pay Animators More

The best Christmas present you can get is the present you give to another. In ten or so years, who knows what the anime industry is going to look like; it might be smaller, it might not even exist at all. Why? Because when it comes down to it, animators in Japan get paid as much as a person who works at McDonalds, it’s pathetic. Would giving each animator a raise, increase the overall quality of anime and raise sales? I don’t know, what I do know is that before we get any of these gifts, I want the animators to get paid more first; they deserve it.
darkcyderon Dec. 25, 2009 at 1:47 p.m.
Closest thing to any of those that we get is Jump Super Stars / Jump Ultimate Stars.

But I agree.
wwfunderakeron Dec. 25, 2009 at 2:14 p.m.
I agree with paying animators and manga writers more, they deserve it.

GrandMarshalon Dec. 25, 2009 at 3:29 p.m.
i would live in that nation
RockmanBionicson Dec. 25, 2009 at 5:27 p.m.
I especially condone #9,#8,#6 and #4.

Now what do I personally want that is next to impossible? I want the next Persona game's shtick to be not crushing cards in your hands or shooting yourself in the head (which really, you can't top.), but the persona users using transformation devices to become something like a sentai team. The personas themselves would be mechas, naturally.

Actually, now that I think about it, that doesn't sound completely improbable.
GodLen staff on Dec. 25, 2009 at 6:28 p.m.
@RockmanBionics: Do the impossible, ect ect
Slimon Dec. 25, 2009 at 7:36 p.m.
If the Anime video games were better we'd have more Haruhi Suzumiya.

This can also go both ways. Anime made from a video game storyline. Just look at any anime starring COS-MOS.

#10 would be a treat and some folks are still giddy over the rumors circulating over the possibility of Studio 4C doing an OAV adaptation of the manga's later arcs.

#9- I haven't follow shounen anime craze titles in years and I don't plan on doing so anytime soon unless they actually end instead of running for hundreds of episodes where they eventually become stale.

#8- Don't go giving Funimation, Toei and/or Akira Toriyama any more ideas for another DB series.

#7- For those that have G4 on their satellite or cable, you may know that the critics of X-Play have a strong hatred for anime-based video games since crazed anime fans on their forums request for the games to be reviewed and most of the time, the critics find the games to suck resulting in backlash from said crazed fanbase.

#6- Filler's especially an issue with shounen anime titles. It's what killed the ratings for Rurouni Kenshin's TV anime adaptation when it first aired in Japan.

#5- I imagine Monty Python and the Holy Grail would look even more nutty if the Japanese took a crack at animating it. XD

#4- Good for mecha anime fans, bad for the cities who have to spend so much money to build, maintain and eventually take down said life-size giant robot statues.

#3- Ummmm.... I'm fine just living my life day by day. No need to move to a country completely focused on what I consider to be a normal hobby.

#2- If it's any classic anime title that lacked a clear ending in its original TV run, then by all means I would see it. Case examples: Rurouni Kenshin's Jinchuu arc, His and Her Circumstances, Fruits Basket, Great Teacher Onizuka.

#1- They deserve it. The low-paying conditions are gonna drive away potential future animated talent if they don't get reasonably paid well for it. And with no new talent, anime will be lucky to still be around 10 years from now.
Alexison Dec. 25, 2009 at 11:28 p.m.
Now I understand why filler exists, if there were no filler, all anime would have to air after the anime has finished

This one has  an almost Moebuis like twist that leaves me a bit cross-eyed. But it does make an interesting point about how to begin when finished. Maybe there's some hidden deepness to it that simply escapes me or I haven't dug deep enough. I'll have to think about it some more :)

But that was a good list otherwise. I'd love more decade-long shounen shows, and I'd even be happy if somehow the stupid ants story arc of HxH ends at last and maybe even gets animated (and here's an excellent example of hiw a show can get no fillers!) an move on to something better.
Sigueon Dec. 25, 2009 at 11:32 p.m.
Gunbuster 3 this year, please.
JJOR64on Dec. 26, 2009 at 12:15 a.m.
I would love to see Goku go Super Saiyen 8.  His hair should be a mile long at that level.
John_Martoneon Dec. 26, 2009 at 1:19 p.m.
You know, I expected to come in here and be like "I don't agree with a number of those things" and yet... I want every single one of them...
Addfwynon Dec. 26, 2009 at 10:18 p.m.
#10 Berserk...not really my thing, sorry.

#9 Good shows?  I am an advocate of good shows.

#8  No, no more Dragonball.  No more anything by Toriyama unless Square is hiring him to do another Chrono game.

#7.  Jump Super Stars and Jump Ultimate Stars are really fun games I find, not like super deep or involved, but really fun.
Also, just as a sidenote, I am enjoying FFXIII so far, I wouldn't say the story sucks.  Not gonna knock FFT off the pedestal of Final Fantasy stories, but it's good.

#6 I am actually for series finishing and just...ending.  I don't want filler, but I don't want series that never end.  I LIKE my series to have a set beginning and end, that are often over after 1 or 2 seasons.  So sure, end filler and just end anima earlier.

#5 Fine with this one as long as they are done well, and aren't just direct ports.  Innovation is key.

#4 Do not like mecha, mecha need to go away.

#3 You mean...Japan?

#2 I'm not sure about this one, I like new and innovative as long as it is done well.  I see too much media that just keeps trying to revive the classics, and it gets old.  Keep them classic, and make new things instead, even as an homage to the classics.

#1  Agreed fully, conditions in Japan are rough enough without the 'labour of love only please' wages they get.
Thageon Dec. 27, 2009 at 12:43 a.m.
Let's make #3 a reality. We can start accepting donations, right now~

And other than #1, the others are no, just no... A McGyver anime sounds cool, but, nah... It just doesn't...
N15PCAon Dec. 27, 2009 at 12:17 p.m.

Amen to number 6 and 1 on your list.  Some shows are just to long.  Sometimes it works (Masion Ikkoku) and most of the time it falls flat on it's face. (Bleach)

I also think some animes are just to short.  I could also like to see more Black Lagoon, Claymore and Berserk episodes.

I seen so many news reports about how little Animators get paid.  My brother getts paid more and he works at Wal-mart!
BobCaton Dec. 27, 2009 at 1:07 p.m.
#1 will not happen, we're in an economic depression and employers know it.    Yes, they deserve a raise, but the bosses won't give it.
Kuma_From_Argentinaon Dec. 29, 2009 at 2:46 a.m.
Give Kentaro Miura the arms of an hecatorquintos... then we could have a ending...
Dethfish77on Dec. 29, 2009 at 9:34 a.m.
Naruto: The Broken Bond was a pretty good anime based video game.

And I completely agree with #1, It sucks that animators get paid such little money. I want to be watching new anime 10 years from now, damn it!
