The New York Times Adds Best-Selling Manga List

Manga is mainstream enough for the New York Times...but still not the same thing as comics.

1. Naruto 2. Naruto 3. Naruto 4 Naruto...
1. Naruto 2. Naruto 3. Naruto 4 Naruto...
In an attempt to seem “hip” and “with it,” the New York Times has added three new best-seller lists to its weekly repertoire: one for hardcover, one for paperback, and one for manga, which tends to also be paperback, so I wonder if we might see it on that second list too? Let's see!

...Hmm, nope. Looks like manga only appears on the manga list, thus furthering the agenda of elitist comic and manga fans who insist that the two are separate and unequal, even if they disagree on which is better. Sigh!

The first four entries of the top 10 list for this week are Naruto 38, 40, 39, and 41, in that order, followed by MPD-Psycho 5 to round out the top half-- veeeeery interesting. And I love MPD-Psycho.

Similarly, the latter half are four Naruto volumes (37, 35, 36, and 34), and the final entry on the list is Eden volume 11. Isn't that the one that Dark Horse editor Carl Horn always says doesn't sell as well as it should?

So, a very interesting list. Only two companies are represented this week, VIZ and Dark Horse, and only three separate series...although it's unsurprising that titles like MPD-Psycho and Eden, which may appeal to western comics fans more than your average manga, might sell pretty well. And of course, everything gets a little screwy when VIZ releases so many Naruto volumes a month-- I'll have to keep an eye out on this.

While the New York Times figures out a plan to keep themeless reverent in the upcoming post modern stone age, The Animation industry has taken back its channels for the most part and has pretty much stated it will (the TV side) just die out just like the rest of the country.  The thing is by the time any new blood comes into the industry there would be no Huluwood, no machinery and the masses too scared and blood soaked to even take art as art...

I don't find it necessary to have a list dedicated solely to manga. Hardcover and softcover graphic novels, maybe, but I'd much prefer manga were in the same category since it's all just sequential art in book form.
