The First Bebop Flick Scoop: No Origin

A few details on the Bebop flick are now available.

Okay, look, let me get this out of the way: iFMagazine misspells “Bebop.” Twice. Even though they've got the properly-spelled cover to Cowboy Bebop Remix right on the page. Don't say I didn't warn you.

For all that, though, the site has managed to get some words out of the producer of the live-action Bebop film, Erwin Stoff, who talks about the story of the film. So far? It's not the origin story.

Peter Craig is on board to pen the script, and Stoff is quick to note that the story will pick up with Spiegel already in action. “It’s not an origin story,” says Stoff. “We start with him, when he is in his present life already.”

...Which tells us very little, but it's something. Here's some more:

“First of all, we’re honoring the series,” says Stoff. “I don’t know how many people can say this, but the first thing we did was go over and meet with Watanabe. We started there. He will be the first guy to read a script when it’s done. We’ll discuss directors with him. As far as the cast goes, I can’t tell you who is going to play what, but I can’t imagine that we’re not going to have a totally multi-ethnic cast.”

Seems like a small flash of hope, But I just want too see who is directing and what the script will be.

Ok, but that still dose not tell us anything so may changes are made post-script. We are just going to have to wait and see.

It's probably good we won't get an origin story that means no highschool hijinks.

I see this as a good thing. While watching CowBe, I never felt I needed to know how Spike and Jet met, how Jet got the "Bebop" or what Spike's life was like pre-Julia. Would I like to have known? Sure. Absolutely. But that kind of information wasn't central to the series. That's what I liked about CowBe. I was thrown right into the mix, given a clue about the back-stories of the cast and allowed the fill in the blanks with my own rampant imagination.

With the live-action film, I imagine they'll use the "red eye" caper as a subplot to introduce the cast; much like episode #1. Then, they'll lead things into the Spike/Vicious/Julia storyline. If Stoff, Craig and [Director-To-Be-Named-Later] tread carefully, they'll could accomplish something worth watching.

Now, that "multi-ethnic" blurb raised my eyebrows. Does this mean Faye's Singaporean background will be considered during casting? That would be nice.

But what about Jet? Hmm, I always through he was bi-racial myself; much like our recenty sworn-in President. Frankly, I'd just like to see them cast well with actors capable of carrying Keanu Reeves through the film. Ethnicity isn't a "be all and end all" with me. But it would be a refreshing change of pace to see on screen.

We'll see when the time comes. I'm still kinda scared.

What? You mean there are people adapting films that actually sound like they know what they are doing enough that it gives me, the eternal pessimist, hope!?

Wow... maybe this won't be bad at all...

If Watanabe is on board from the get go then I think there is a chance that this movie will be decent.  My hope has increased slightly.  I am also intrigued at the "multi-ethnic" comment.  Who knows, they might surprise us all...
