The Daily Shin Buun 12/19/08

The Daily Shin Buun (literally "New Buzz;' "shinbun" is also the Japanese word for newspaper) is a collection of bits and pieces of news we've gathered throughout the day.

Things are ramping up for the holidays, and I'm distracted trying to make sure I have presents for everyone on my list. Man, I'm never going to finish in time...

Canaan
Canaan
Anime:
  • Keen-eyed users over at AnimeSuki spotted that the anime adaptation of the popular game 428 (by Fate/Stay Night creators Type-Moon) is finally moving forward. The new anime will actually be called Canaan and its official website has opened up already.
  • Interestingly, the OVA based on the manga Denpa Teki na Kanojo (“Eletro-Magnetic Girlfriend”) will be released as a bonus along with the third volume of the manga Kurenai. Huh.
  • Meanwhile Nebs tipped me off to FUNimation's online VOD site, which now features over 500 episodes, and in many cases entire series available on a download-to-own basis. If I recall correctly the files DO have DRM.
  • If that's not enough anime for you, or just not the right title, VIZ has uploaded the final five episodes of Naruto's first season (i.e. the ones leading up to Shippuuden). You can get 'em on the official Naruto site.
  • Aaand Dwight Whorley, a man convicted of receiving child pornography of both the photographic and anime kind, had his sentence upheld by a federal judge. His lawyer says they'll keep pushing on to the Supreme Court if necessary. This is so depressing.

Manga:

  • Ever-vigilant Kuri notes that troubled yaoi publisher Drama Queen has announced yet another delay in what has been one of the most highly-anticipated yaoi releases ever, The Tyrant Falls in Love. I hope they can pull it together...
  • Speaking of ever-vigilant, Muhyojo announces that the newest spinoff manga for Fist of the North Star will feature the character Jagi, a manipulative man with a disfigured head and a grudge against Kenshiro.
  • ANN has word that Mayu Shinjou is going to finally get around to continue her previously two-part miniseries manga Ayakashi no Koi Emaki starting in January.
    Broccoli
    Broccoli
  • Broccoli may be shutting down, but that doesn't mean they're slowing down-- they have a final costume of Chitose from Galaxy Angel for sale, as well as about 45 Juvenile Orion goodie boxes. They're only supposed to be for the fan club, so I recommend joining their mailing list for details on that. They're also giving away free goodies to some of the users who comment on this post talking about all of the Broccoli books they've owned, favorite Broccoli series, and anything else to show why you're a fan of the company.
  • Finally, G-Man and I talked a bit about comics and manga, particularly a few manga titles that are being developed into western comics. Check out the video here.

Aya-tan!
Aya-tan!
Music:
  • Hashihime has some details about when The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya seiyuu Aya Hirano's Riot Tour will appear in your town. By which I mean, when you can import the DVD from Japan. It's hitting streets there on February 25. And yes, it does appear that they have a photo of her licking her dog. (Who do you think you are, Aya, Shoko-tan?)

Games:

  • The recently-popular anime Kuroshitsuji, about a demonically perfect butler (which is totally different from a demon gay baker) is getting a new DS game courtesy of Square Enix. Now, Squenix doesn't necessarily have a reputation for awesome games based on its manga/anime franchises (*cough cough* Fullmetal Alchemist RPGs), but the adventure game will feature mini-games like dishwashing...which at least says to me that they're actually thinking about what the show's about.
  • And speaking of licensed games, if you're sitting on the edge of your seat waiting for the Afro Samurai game, Kotaku has some pretty promising video footage for you.

Cons:

Whew, I think that's everything. And damn, that was a lot, too! Don't worry, I'm not planning on letting them get this long very often.

You say Broccoli is giving away free stuff, but when I sent them an email back when they were offering stuff to anime clubs, just like they requested, no response.
Bertmastaon Dec. 20, 2008 at 1:53 a.m.
the naruto episodes are alright for people in the US, unlike me stuck in the UK with no access to them >(
giaon Dec. 20, 2008 at 8:54 a.m.
Niko: Well, at the moment they're trying to get rid of all their inventory, so you could try again.

Sorry, Bertmasta. :/ Licensing is so amazingly difficult. I'm so glad I don't have deal with anything like that @.o

The Dramaqueen on-going publishing "drama" is predictable and ridiculous.  They shouldn't even be anticipating release dates because they do not have the books yet!  I am not anticipating nothing from DQ since I have already lost my patience with them.  I have moved on to better things since then.
shizukion Dec. 20, 2008 at 10:30 a.m.
Niko: Right now I'm concentrating on sending large packages to libraries (I explained it in my follow up post), and small packages to individuals who have previously bought Broccoli Books manga.

I'll get to anime clubs by Wednesday.
BTW, anime clubs with school mailing addresses are grouped w/ libraries b/c they also qualify for USPS library mail.

Ruby: Agreed. I have a lot of sympathy for the employees-- they're wonderful people and I absolutely adore them and they really love BL, so I absolutely wish them the best...but for now, I'm not expecting anything.

WOOO!! More stuff by Type Moon! Heero is happy.
