The Anime of Each Generation?

What shows hooked otaku in their teens, 20's and 30's? The answers might actually surprise you.

I'm 28 and the Anime that really got me into being a fan was The Slayers. So, I'm kind of in the middle of 20's and 30's, Slayers will always have a special place in my heart (right next to Sniper Island)

I think the reason why Pokemon isn't on the list because Digimon Adventure was better done :)

Cowboy Bebop put me on to anime in my late teens but Naruto, Fullmetal Alchemist, and Evangelion really put the battery in my back in my 20s.

I'm an unusual case since I was living outside of the states and came to the US when I was around 10. I'm a 1990's person and in my early 20's. I didn't get into anime until my college years once I had internet and discover Anime Vice. I seen anime once in one year of middle school, but I didn't know it was anime.

The anime I seen first back in middle school were Dragon Ball, Sailor Moon, Pokemon, Yu Yu Hakusho, Tenchi Muyo, Inuyasha (was on Adult Swim), and Digimon. On Kids Wb and Fox Kids, it was One Piece, Pokemon, Digimon, and Cardcaptor Sakura. I didn't know these guys were anime. I called them cartoons.

I would say Inuyasha got me in because it gave me a different feel than those American washed anime I watched on Toonami, Kids WB, and Fox Kids. Inuyasha had the Japanese culture to it. I finally finish the series this summer, Anime Summer Marathon 2014: Inuyasha.

Is Attack on Titan, the Cowboy Bebop? I just think Attack on Titan was the most hyped show along with Kill la Kill. I don't know if new anime fans watch that as their first anime.

Toonami was my main hookup for anime during my teens as I got exposed to Dragon Ball Z, the Gundam franchise and Tenchi Muyo. Adult Swim came along later with their offerings like Cowboy Bebop and Trigun that added to my interests.

Being in my 20s and pushing to be 30 next year, my current anime interests that continually get my attention are the Fate and Monogatari franchises. Otherwise throughout that decade of my life, I've been into various titles that caught my interest in one form or another.

Digimon is the first anime i took note of, along with Pokemon, though i didn't actually know it was anime. Dragon ball z has to be the first show that got me hyped for anime back in the late 1990s/early 2000s, even though i didn't watch till a few years ago. the first real anime i watched fully and which made me realize i wanted to watch more of these strange cartoons was samurai X, around 1998.

Then Yugioh: The pyramid of Light (the movie) and subsequent games officially inducted me into the arena of otaku. At that time i knew what i was watching was anime and that it wasn't like the western cartoons i used to see on cartoon network.

I remember encountering an anime about ninjas that somewhat turned me off anime for a while; i don't remember what it was called but it was violent, with all sorts of deformed characters, and some villain that looked like a rock.

Like Takashichea, i didn't start fully watching anime till college; before that samurai x was showing on normal TV and once it ended, that was it. then someone gave me a DVD of the Yugioh movie, and when i watched it, that was it. Before that i would catch DBZ ads on cartoon network, the cartoon block ending one hour before the actual dragon ball episodes aired. The internet in college allowed me to truly discover anime, and eventually naruto, bleach and blood+, the anime i first watched during my first ever month of access to anime.

In terms of anime series...long running ones. DragonballZ, Ranma & Rurouni Kenshin really pushed me into the anime craze

Shorter shows like Bebop, Outlaw Star & Trigun were also watched but the longer ones got me more invested and kept me wanting more anime

I was 18 but Sailor Moon was the show that got me into anime really. I went from novice fan picking up a few titles here and there to wanting to know about anime more. Sailor Moon made me want to know more about show and more about anime. Almost 20 years later I go to cons and I have a huge anime and manga collection. In so I have been able to learn of many things like TGWTG, Twitch, Blip. If someone hadn't mentioned during a panel at AnimeNext that bad Titanic animated movie and never shown clips I never would have went looking for clips and stuff on it. Finding Critic's review of it and eventually found TGWTG. Which through that I found twitch and blip. All cause I caught last episode of Sailor Moon in syndication. Yeah that was when the show had been on at like insane times like 6 am but it was on like right after school at that point where I lived.

I was one of the guys into the Pokemon craze, but mine was mainly on the cards and the movies and back then, I was also into Sailor Moon and DragonBall Z. However, what really got me into anime was a few shows that ended up getting me out of my depression from being homeless when I was entering high school. All of them being rather unexpected. (Super Gals!, Red Garden, Excel Saga and Revolutionary Girl Utena.) However, checking out Cardcaptor Sakura and Blood + were the reasons why I stayed hooked into anime later onwards. Now, I'm in my early 20's and I'm still a fan since I ran into a lot more quality shows then back when I was obsessed with multiple anime series in my teens. Don't panic though. I got out of the "obsession" part around my Junior years in high school.

@Dream: Same with me, Toonami was what started my love for anime. I first started to watch Yu yu hakusho, then one of the Gundams that i don't remember right, then DBZ with my brother and then Trigun. I really enjoyed watching them, and i was only like 4 or 5 when i got into it, but then came Pokemon and i was just like nuts for it back then. Later in 2005, i saw on TV that Adult Swim announces the new comeing Anime Blood+. i saw it all, loved it. Started to watch anime like never before.
