Tales from Yaoi-Con: DMP Snatches a Tyrant

Yaoi publisher Digital Manga Publishing rescues some titles!

There are certain titles that, when mentioned in the yaoi world, set off sparks. One of them is Under Grand Hotel, also known as the Great Unlicensable. (It's a prison story, and it's not the wispy romance that so many BL titles are, as you might imagine.)

Another? The Tyrant Falls in Love, a veeery popular title about a homophobe scientist whose assistant falls for him. Created by Hinako Takanaga-- known for quite a lot of BL titles, including Little Butterfly, Liberty Liberty!, the title is actually a continuation of her four-volume work Challengers.

Takanaga has jumped around from licensee to licensee-- 801 Media and DMP, Blu, and Drama Queen have all published works by Takanaga-sensei. But Challengers was licensed by Drama Queen, and so was Tyrant...until this weekend. Drama Queen announced the license quite some time back, but unfortunately fell into trouble not long thereafter. Earlier this month they made some movements towards a return, but it's clear that they have lost the license, because DMP announced that they will be releasing the title in English over the weekend at Yaoi-Con.

  • It wasn't DMP's only new pickup-- in fact, they also rescued the popular ongoing manga Kizuna, by Kodaka Kazuma, which had been licensed by Central Park Media's BeBeautiful. And there were plenty of new titles, too:
  • A Bloody Kiss Tonight by Makoto Tateno
  • Cafe Latte Rhapsody by Toko Kawai
  • Double Cast by Ellie Mamahara
  • Endless Comfort by Sakura Sakuya
  • No Touching At All by Kou Yoneda
  • Stay Close To Me by Yaya Sakuragi
  • Your Love Sickness by Kiku Hiyate

No word from Kuri about new licenses from TOKYOPOP's Blu or Media Blasters, making me think it was a pretty quiet Yaoi-Con in terms of licenses. Most of the titles listed here are from popular mangaka that DMP has published works by before, so the only real surprise is Tyrant and Kizuna, at least in my opinion...but we'll see if anything more pops up!

DMP got lots of goodies! I have to look everything up on Baka-Updates, though, because I can never reconcile the English titles with the Japanese titles I'm familiar with. (Yes, I know my manga titles by rote, rather than understanding.)

I finally have something to look forward to - Kizuna and another Makoto Tateno title.
