SWORD ART ONLINE Hollow Points -- Review

VICE PIT. What's it like playing the game within a game... within a game?

Vapovile moderator on Aug. 26, 2014 at 2:33 p.m.

I would love to fire up the game on my Vita and weigh in as well (since I am a big gamer as well)...but I really don't want to purchase anything from SAO. I personally find the series to be WAAAAY overrated and other than the visuals, it's pretty terrible in all aspects. Other than one or two moments in the series, I felt that there was literally NOTHING in the game to challenge the almighty Kirito who was a beta tester, and thus way better than all you "normal" players. There's absolutely no struggle in the series, and the relationships completely fall flat. Seriously, EVERY female in the series loves Kirito, including his "sister", but it was established that he is destined to be with Asuna! So why even have all these girls, a harem only works if you don't know which girl he is going to choose at the end!

There are other problems I have with the show, but I'll leave it at this for now. I don't know how well the actual game is, but from your descriptions of how text-heavy it is, it really sounds like just a replaying of the anime. But I'll check out your full review Mike, perhaps they fixed some problems with the series.

1st JRPGs have always always been top heavy on text. A game about a anime about a mmorpg should not be surprising its top heavy on text.

2nd Kirito is not the cheater type. Dumb not to notice women interested in him but not the cheater type.

3rd yes SAO is in the gene of MMORPGs that get " real" as Tom puts it. But it is its own series just like Log Horizon is its own series. Being in a gene does not make it the same thing.

4th Tom would have dated himself if he said " Gameboy" as well. Some might go wth is that to. One of the 1st in our area to have a Atari , an I owned a Commodore 64. So Ya have at least one viewer who can date himself older than that.

5 SAO world/ game mechinics is more complex than World of Warcraft. Also played Everquest for 11 years an its probably more complex than the SAO as well. SAO did not capture the mmorpg mechanics as story elements per say they were barely building blocks an a health bar reminder.

6th the part about their bodies while stuck in the game is answered in the anime.

I think the woman with the red hair to forge your weapon is actually Lisbeth. She has pink hair.

While SAO isn't the best anime, it has done well being popular and milking the franchise. I still watch the show to kill time.

I agree with Mike. The game is just like OVAs and films. It's for the fans. It's too bad that the game forgot to catch folks who didn't watch the anime but was curious about the game. Anime games don't do well is because they have 2 fronts: be faithful to the fans or catch the new people while promoting the game and anime.

The game also has a SIM element in it. Utilizing that harem element. Letting players date the girls or Klein. They are airing Gun Gale Online arc on Crunchyroll. With the anime, it's more like a girl per arc.

  • SAO - Asuna
  • ALFheim - Suguha/Leafa
  • Gun Gale Online - Sinon
