Anime/Manga News, Stories and Updates

Just got a press release from Section23 Films, which has announced that they're releasing Gintama on DVD! For those unfamiliar, Gintama is a long ongoing and very quirky shounen comedy/action series. VIZ Media has been putting out the manga for some time, but the anime has remained unlicensed, even though it's really quite huge in Japan-- perhaps VIZ "A-List!" Media didn't think the aforementioned quirkiness would do well with mainstream audiences? (They're probably not wrong.)

Anyway, Section23 is going to release Gintama starting this April 27th-- 13 episodes for an MSRP of $39.99. There is no specific word about dubs, so I am inclined to assume that it will be sub-only.

Also due out in April are Hidamari Sketch x365 Complete Collection, Asatte no Houkou (newly titled Living for the Day After Tomorrow) Complete Collection, live-action Space Rangers Complete Collection, Le Portrait de Petite Cossette (yummy horror movie), and live-action Venus Ranger.

Press release!

Can't say I'd buy this seeing as how you can watch it on Crunchyroll for free.  I only see this selling unless there's a Dub on it.  But its cool that its been licensed finally.  Hopefully Shugo Chara and Reborn are next.

I am not a big stream fan (mostly because my ISP loves limiting their band with, I really need to change over....) so I will defiantly will be buying this!

I want to say something, but Rover's comment so perfectly responds to Oneeyedjacks' that I'm not quite sure what to say.

I hope this studio will eventually start releasing dubs, but i won't hold my breath

and i'm sure it's still better then the 5 to 6 years it took to get Sgt. Frog

Well if Section 23 is going to start dubbing anime (again), this would be a good title to do it.

must ... not ... make joke... about kintama.

I'm going to assume sub-only, too. Now, if someone could license Shugo Chara, I'd be an extra happy camper.

Do you think the Crunchyroll stream will still be up once this goes to DVD? And are the initial episodes still up there? I haven't even started watching it yet.

@WillyFourEyes: Yeah-- Shugo Chara! first and second season only, please. Or if the third season is a must, maybe some kind of play through like FUNimation's DBZ marathon mode-- cut out all that live-action and CG stuff. It's cute, but not really very interesting -_-;

I take it Petite Cossette was a license rescue from Geneon considering they had rights to the OAV before. I have the Geneon DVD release of it in my collection as I'm typing now.

I can see Gintama not doing well with mainstream audiences. The show is full of references to anime that many fans wouldn't even know about, it's slow to start off and the humour can be pretty odd at times. I don't think a show where the main characters spend over five minutes sitting around a table talking would do well with the people buying Naruto or Bleach and the fact that Gintama can resemble a typical shounen series if you don't look closer can scare other fans.  It's too bad, because Gintama is a fantastic series.

I'll be blind buying Gintama ... since I personally don't like Crunchyroll or any streaming to be honest. Can't beat DVD quality.  Really excited.

Also, I'm pretty excited for Hidamari Sketch x365 too. Hope the new season comes out on DVD later this year. That'd be awesome.

Jeez.... normally I don't say this about companies but I really kind of want Section 23 to die off. I'm tired of them snagging licenses for good shows and not doing anything worthwhile with them, be it a dub, online streaming, bluray, SOMETHING! They only seem to get in the way and stop other companies from getting the licenses thereby ensuring that they never will get any of the aforementioned things.

There's a lot of people that have a sentimental attachment to the company, but they also have the best pair of rose colored glasses when it comes to their past conduct as ADV Films.  I'd like to see them fail because they mismanaged themselves into near oblivion the first time.  Alas, like Wall St.  they got bailed out and will only continue their past conduct instead of learning from their mistakes.

I'm such a sucker for loaning out anime/manga though. I pretty much buy them to be able to have them for groups.

We started doing group watching parties for Skip Beat when were airing that on site. Granted, there was no alternative, but routing the signal from a PC to the computer just doesn't have the same "group" appeal. Preferable for 1 though.

@metalsnakezero:
Yeah, I assumed that was what you had in your blog post the other day.

@HeeroYuy: @HSaabedra: FWIW, a lot of Section23's shows are going up on The Anime Network, which streams most of them online (and now on iPhones) eventually, such as Clannad After Story and Special A.

Granted, they're not AS available as Hulu/Crunchyroll shows-- most of them have a couple of episodes available for free to registered users and the rest only to paying users, and the streams aren't quite as smooth, either, so I'm not arguing with your point, just making a technical clarification :)
