Summer 2014 Anime Movies/OVAs Guide

What new movies are coming this season?

Welcome to this Summer 2014 Movie and OVA Guide! Most of these movies and OVAs are not available legally because the movies are still in Japan while the OVAs are bundled with the DVDs and Blu-Rays. This summer, we have a English theatrical release of Dragon Ball Z: Battle of the Gods. Consider this as a preview. For this season, I didn't make the OVA trailers due to running out of time. Plus, making OVAs as wiki pages is a bit tricky with our Wiki Policy. It can be part of the anime series or done separately as a single, stand alone title which mandates a movie wiki page.

Movies and OVAs are important because they serve as extra helpings for the fans who want more after finishing up an anime series. Hope you guys and gals enjoy the guide. Let us know what movies and specials you're looking for.

Credits: I used a few sources, Neregate, Anime News Network, and MyAnimelist, to compile the list. I thank BigHeart711 for creating an awesome banner.

I completely forgot about the Lupin movie. It's been a long time since I've seen anything Lupin so I will gladly watch that when it becomes available. I wasn't interested in the Fujiko Mine series at all.

Marshal Victoryon June 30, 2014 at 5:34 p.m.

Ghost in the Shell: Arise - Border:3 Ghost Tears seen this. An the plot summery is way off. Posted a correction on the trailer thread.

Also um Daimidaler: Prince vs. Penguin Empire ?!? Wait a show thats hated by people who love fan service thats mostly fan service an a penguin "tail" joke retold a thousand time, got a movie? Really? Just stunned by that. Ohh mini OVA ..still really?

@Lurkero: Then you odds are would not like this as its the same people who did The woman known as Fujiko Mine. Now the new Detective Conan vs Lupin the 3rd might be more what your looking for in the 70s threw 80s fun style.

takashichea moderator on June 30, 2014 at 5:57 p.m.

Oh, I thought the Summer Anime 2014 Guide would be posted first. That's okay. We have the main course tomorrow!

I'm looking forward to Noragami, Mushibugyo, and Attack on Titan OVAs. I'm interested in the Studio Ghibli film, When Marnie Was There. I watched every Ghibli film except The Wind Rises.

Thanks to Tom for posting this guide.

This is the correction @Marshal Victory: pointed out.

Motoko and Batou do not pose as lovers on vacation. Not even sure or how they got that. An the second sentence should read "Togusa investigates a murder of a detective who possessed a case with prosthetic legs originally manufactured by the Mermaid's Leg corporation."

I'll fix it once this article gets a forum attachment. Thanks Marshal.

Pretty much any anime series gets a special OVA bundled with its DVD/BD release even dirty penguin ecchi shows. I haven't seen a show that didn't have one. It's Anime Marketing 101, dear Marshal!

I haven't seen any Lupin movies yet. I loved the series when I first watched it back in middle school. Just never had a chance to fully watch and complete a series.

Marshal Victoryon June 30, 2014 at 6:08 p.m.

@takashichea: Ya replied with what i think is correct with out giving away the plot. I think its a translation thing.Because Wikipedia has it similary from the offical site in Japanese. So maybe a translation error. Or site not updated when that never happened or a translation error.

If Motoko and Batou posed as lovers that would be the chatter on alota forums. Because many fans of the series think hes the only cyborg for her etc etc.

What odds will ya give that Daimidaler: Prince vs. Penguin Empire mini ova goes full on henti? High 90s at least me thinks. An fans of the manga hate hate hate the anime. So the mini ova has to be more like the manga or some ones gona get a rude email!

takashichea moderator on June 30, 2014 at 6:20 p.m.

@Marshal Victory:

Aesthetica of a Rogue Hero OVAs and Vanquished Queens (OAV) went borderline hentai. Fairy Tail went all ecchi with their OVAs. OVAs are supposed to do that because they are like "fanservice" to fans who bought the DVDs and BDs.

Did you watch Noragami and Mushibugyo OVA yet?

Oh shoot, I forgot about Recently, My Sister is Unusual. That show is more disturbing and uncomfortable than Daimidaler: Prince vs. Penguin Empire.

Dream moderator on June 30, 2014 at 6:22 p.m.

Oh shoot, I forgot about Recently, My Sister is Unusual.

Don't remind me. -_-

takashichea moderator on June 30, 2014 at 6:33 p.m.

It was only bad in the first few episodes. It got more tamer I think. Oh, I forgot to mention in the OP. All DVDs and BDs of ecchi shows are all uncensored. Some of the titles, Nozo x Kimi and Paradise of Innocent, have some NSFW stuff in the manga. I had to swap out some images for some friendly ones.

takashichea moderator on June 30, 2014 at 6:36 p.m.

@Marshal Victory:

I fixed the Ghost in the Shell summary for you. Sorry, it took me a while.

Dream moderator on June 30, 2014 at 6:36 p.m.

@takashichea: I know. But still, said first few episodes were suffering to bare through. I already seen pics of what unedited versions of those moments are like in the video release.

takashichea moderator on June 30, 2014 at 6:43 p.m.

Yeah, it was. Reminds me of Aesthetica because both of them had a urination scene which made things so damn uncomfortable.

zaldaron June 30, 2014 at 6:45 p.m.

boy could paradise of innocence go badly quickly....the persona three movie follows the game more closely and by this I mean at alll....? Anyone know anything about the new ghost in the shell movie....possessing a prosthetic leg seems even a little ridiculous for ghost in the shell...

@Marshal Victory:

Did you watch Noragami and Mushibugyo OVA yet?

Not yet . Actually have not seen them up any where yet. Or I missed them when they was in the featured quee.

Thanks for the correction on Ghost in the Shell: Arise - Border:3 Ghost Tears plot summery that made no sense. Re watching it again atm. Oddly enuff that poster art for it is very subtle spoiler. Or rather for those who have watched the show a subtle very artistic foreshadow of what the story is. One could arugument its a cookie if it was a video game.Who ever did it had seen the movie an used a good use of illustration subtle enuff to be a in joke almost.

Sorry if my posts about it rambled to long to confuse things :/

I blame the steroids I'm on atm.

Marshal Victoryon June 30, 2014 at 8:26 p.m.

@zaldar: Watched it twice now. The Wikipedia an movie database plot summery are um not based on the movie. Probably either bad translation from the official site ,or cocaine is one hell of a drug.

Whats up atm is summery I came up with. The other one makes it sound like the guy that died just had one of those legs an almsot makes it sounds like it was attached. Ach that part I messed up Sorry @takashichea: It should be ..

"Motoko and Batou work as a team to try to stop a terrorist organization whose symbol is the Scrasath. Meanwhile, Togusa investigates a murder of a man who possessed a case with prosthetic legs manufactured by the Mermaid's Leg corporation."

The " case with prosthetic legs" part must have dropped from one of the copy pastes about this. As it is now from Meanwhile on is what the wikipedia says. Which makes it sound like the guy killed has a leg from these Mermaid's Leg. Its a case with two legs in it.

Probably of the 3 Arise episodes movies this one is probably my favorite. Probably. It sets up the team, has a very slick story with a good amount of fore shadowing. That on second watch shows a bit more complex tale than at 1st glance.

@takashichea: Um comments on the Recently, My Sister is Unusual ova seem to be of the mind it was tamer over all than the series.

Bigheart711on June 30, 2014 at 10:05 p.m.

Shamefully forgot about the Magi OVA. That and the second P3 Movie is what I'm looking forward to.

takashichea moderator on June 30, 2014 at 11:25 p.m.

When I searched for trailers and a default image of Paradise of Innocent, I was riddled with NSFW stuff. That and Nozo x Kimi are based on Seinen manga series.

@Marshal Victory:

No problem.

I didn't know you were a Magi fan. I still haven't dived into Persona franchise yet.

Bigheart711on July 1, 2014 at 7:46 a.m.

@takashichea: I was watching the Labyrinth of Magic season not too long ago and still am.

AgentFakkuon July 2, 2014 at 7:47 p.m.
daimidaler ftw
zaldaron July 3, 2014 at 8:38 p.m.

@takashichea: sooo why would a senien manga series though be about trickyness? (as given the plot analysis if there is NSFW stuff I assume it must be tricky which while not surprising given the title is still disappointing. *does a quick google image search* HOLFY FUCDHKGINS SHIFTGEGHEW.....mommy always said a girl should clean where she tickles or she will get sick......WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS SHIT GET IT OFF MY COMPUTER.....sigh...looks like I have found another series to hate because it makes people think all anime is perverted pedophilia crap....
