Spring 2013 Anime - - What's Good?

More pilots! DEVIL SURVIVOR! SAMURAI BRIDE! THE SEVERING CRIME EDGE! MY TEEN ROMANTIC COMEDY SNAFU! How many turds do you have wade through this season to find something good?

Read this Anime Novice's reviews of four other new Spring pilots here, if you care to...

For this next sampling of Spring pilots, I chose four shows based on title alone: THE SEVERING CRIME EDGE, DEVIL SURVIVOR 2: THE ANIMATION, SAMURAI BRIDE, and MY TEEN ROMANTIC COMEDY SNAFU. Three sounded genuinely interesting, and one sounded just plain terrible (I’ll let you guess which one that is).

Of this quartet, only one rose above and beyond. Which one? Well, you should read on to find out, of course, but let’s just say it’s not the pretentious teen rom-com...

THE SEVERING CRIME EDGE

Wow. Just wow. THE SEVERING CRIME EDGE’s two leads are “the Queen of Hair”, a helpless little creature with magical hair that can’t be cut, and Haimura, a boy with an extreme hair fetish. He first encounters her by accident, and is so transfixed by her locks (which, to be fair, is incredibly sparkly) that he proceeds to stalk, stroke and fantasize about it for the entire episode.

(Haimura also carts around a pair of special scissors passed down by his family: a detail so strange it must be a plot point!)

This pilot also features two ominous girls “protecting” the Queen from a curse that prevents anyone from being able to cut her hair; though, that leaves her susceptible to some unknown evil doers with “Kill Goods.” And, as far as I can tell, Kill Goods are mystical objects passed down through generations of murderers with special powers...

Remember Haimura’s scissors? Definitely Kill Goods.

Though CRIME EDGE is gorgeous to look at, especially when the Queen’s hair is splayed out like a sea of serpents, Haimura’s hair fetish is more than a little... disconcerting.

To each their own, but watching him sniffing her hair and moaning at the sight of it made me feel like I was watching a porn clearly not meant for me. As a pilot, this episode seemed almost like a stand-alone piece. Though I’m not quite sure what direction it’s headed in, the ghostly murder mystery seems tantalizing enough to give a second look.

RATING: MIGHT WATCH SOME TIME, MAYBE [View it here and decide for yourself!]

SAMURAI BRIDE

As soon as Crunchyroll had me verify my age to watch this, I thought I was in store for a ton of naked cartoons. Turns out, I was right and I was wrong. The best part of SAMURAI BRIDE, honestly, is how it censors the naughty bits: rather than blot out boobs with a boring black bar, it splatters black ink all over them. Got to say, that's pretty creative.

Unfortunately, that’s about as good as it gets.

The pilot opens with the line, “This is the story of love, courage and kisses of the Samurai Girls!” Good grief. Amidst the upskirts and cleavage, there is a muddled story about a holy dojo that’s been turned into a maid cafe due to some samurai's financial struggles. Muneakira returns from his travels to discover that the dojo (and his harem of "samurai brides", more specifically) has traded slutty costumes for battle training.

A group of Dark Samurai girls show up and do some minor butt-kicking, cast a curse on Muneakira that prevents him from using his samurai powers and... to be honest, I sort of tuned out by then. SAMURAI BRIDE is way too cutesy for my taste, and its convoluted story leaves much to be desired.

RATING: WILL NOT WATCH AGAIN EVER [View it here and decide for yourself!]

MY TEEN ROMANTIC COMEDY SNAFU

I have only myself to blame for this one. Judging by the title, I knew this one wasn’t for me, but nevertheless, I was morbidly curious about what sort of romcom hijinks awaited in a show with such an expository name...

Well, SNAFU has two of the most insipid leads I’ve seen in an anime show so far (yes, even EMMA: A VICTORIAN ROMANCE!). Hachiman is an obnoxious, whiny teenage boy who hates everyone and everything because some girl he had a crush on rejected him. Yukino is an equally nauseating, holier-than-thou teenage girl whose life is just so hard because she’s too pretty.

These two vapid, would-be lovers spend most of the episode bickering back and forth, each seeming so proud of themselves for being honest and open. Yawn.

For teenagers, this show might provide characters who “get it” like they do; who feel unique for hating everyone and speaking their mind. Speaking as somebody who definitely once was a know-it-all, pessimistic teen, I have no desire to watch a show with those types of leads. No matter what lesson they'll eventually learn along the way, Hachiman and Yukino did not leave me wondering what type of SNAFU they’d get into.

RATING: WILL NOT WATCH AGAIN EVER [View it here and decide for yourself!]

DEVIL SURVIVOR

DEVIL SURVIVOR 2: THE ANIMATION might be the best pilot this anime novice has viewed so far. The plot intertwines your usual supernatural threat with modern technology, creating an intriguing mystery that only touches the surface of what’s to come.

It all begins with Nicaea, a website popular among students at best friends Daichi and Hibiki’s school. On the cusp of graduation, the two boys discover that the website shows you your “death face” - - a premonition, in full digital video, of your demise. When they witness and experience their own demise in a crowded subway station, Nicaea brings them back to life and introduces them to the Demon Summoning App. That app quickly comes in handy when a siege of demons wreaks havoc on the city just after their accident.

Daichi and Hibiki are introduced as buddies before the demon subplot even takes place, so when they band together (along with the fellow classmate and future love interest, Nitta), it not only makes sense for the show, it seems... right.

As the two dudes discover their demon avatars and delve deeper into what Nicaea is (yep, she's got a secret or two, as well), they must work together to figure out how to use this second chance to fight off the demons. This one episode of digital demonology has more meat to it than any of the others combined.

The design of DEVIL SURVIVOR 2: THE ANIMATION seems more modern than the others, as well, and the juxtaposition of intricate, horror-inspired creatures fuses seamlessly with the futuristic hacker undertones of the Demon Summoning App. By combining the supernatural with the technological, DEVIL SURVIVOR 2 introduces a story and characters that I finally am eager to follow.

RATING: WILL DEFINITELY WATCH [View it here and decide for yourself!]

From this batch of pilots, I learned a few things...

  1. Don't tempt fate with a silly-sounding title.
  2. I prefer the supernatural to slice-of-life (though, let’s face it, I already knew that).
  3. There's maybe a three-to-one ratio of "Eh" shows to ones I'd like to watch, this season.

With so many new pilots out this Spring, it seems you have to weed through more than a few MY TEEN ROMANTIC COMEDY SNAFU's to find a DEVIL SURVIVOR.

Crime Edge was actually a pleasant surprise. It becomes better later as the story progresses. And DS2 is not bad even though for some reason I am not liking this as much as I thought I would.

Devil survivor 2 anime does a pretty good job with the source materiel. So far it doing pretty well. However, it a bit telling that they are moving fast with the story telling due to being limited to 12 episodes.

DEVIL SURVIVOR is a bloody bit more adult demonic pokemon story. Not bad not great.Tho by being beside the bad it looks great.

MY TEEN ROMANTIC COMEDY SNAFU is high school harem anime by the numbers .With some characters you would have seen other places. At times its meh to almost average. Also seems to find adults abusing kids because of their opinions as ok.

THE SEVERING CRIME EDGE watched 3 episodes was not hooked at all.Maybe im seeing real life politics here of the item kills not the person who uese it bs.Or the sisters injection fetish thing was another bleh.

SAMURAI BRIDE 1st series was intresting design wise. Average story at best. Was hoping this was better story wise. Will wait til the season over to go back an look at it.

Alternate headline could well have been "Spring 2013 Anime How low can the bar go crapfest."But then again winter was week as well for my taste.Hope its at least more entertaining for others.

Hmm, Supernatural slice of life shows - I'm going through the Spring Anime 2013 Trailers Archive Blog that my teammates and I worked on. There is not much. The only thing that comes to my mind is Karneval. It's a supernatural Josei show. It looks colorful and innocent on the outside but it is a bit of a mystery and dark on the inside.

Karneval is available on FUNimation or HULU.

There are two main characters: Nai and Gareki. Nai is looking for a loved one with an abandoned bracelet for his only clue, and Gareki is a pickpocket. When the two meet each other in a mansion, they get set up as wanted criminals where they confront an organization called Circus.

  • Severing Crime Edge - I enjoyed the show. It's definitely not for people who cannot stand creepy fetishes. There is more than hair cutting fetish in this show because (if you watch the show up to three episodes) it explores the unique relationship between the person wielding the Killing Goods (author) and their partner who is their instead.
  • Samurai Bride - It's the 2nd sequel of Hyakka Ryouran Samurai Girls. I watched the first season's first few episodes and dropped it. I'm not a big fan of fan service, but I'm willing to watch an anime series if its characters and story are decent. It's boring than High School of the Dead.
  • Devil Survivor - I got into this show. It's not bad. I'm curious to see where the story leads on.
  • Oregairu - Like you, I couldn't stand the main characters.

I won't check out Devil Survivor 2 until I've played the games, although what I've heard about it that it's pretty generic. I haven't seen it, so I can't judge. I can, however, do that for Samurai Bride. I watched the first season years ago and I thought it was shit; one of the absolute worst anime I've seen in recent years. It's good you won't watch it ever again. I have no interest in Crime Edge whatsoever, and Rom-Com Snafu was surprisingly not terrible. But idk, that was the first episode alone, so...

For Spring this year, I'll stick to just Gargantia and The Demon King Works Part-Time At McDonalds. Spring has so much shit on its lineup that most of it isn't worth checking out at all.

@asian_pride:

Oh cool! I watch those two series. With my teammates, we have set up a Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet Discussion and The Devil is a Part Timer! Discussion threads. Hope to see you there.

Anime is not exempt from Sturgeon's Law: 90% of everything is shit, the remaining 10% might not be.

You chose some real clunkers. I think your ability to pick the wheat from the chaff. You say three of those sounded interesting but I get about a sentence deep in the description and red flags of quality are flying all over the place.
