Spice & Wolf Novel 2 Features Original Cover!

...And Gia does a happy little jig.

Remember that cover for Spice and Wolf novel volume 1 that a lot of people (including myself) didn't dig at all? And how Yen Press decided to release a jacket for the book so people could cover it up with the original cover if they wanted?

That jacket was clearly just a quick fix for volume 1 and I'm happy to report that for volume 2, they're doing the reverse: the book will come with a jacket with a 'westernized' cover, which you can remove to reveal an English version of the original Japanese cover, directly printed on the book.

Rock on, Yen Press! And it just goes to show that people listen when you talk...but uh, that doesn't mean you shouldn't occasionally talk with your wallet, and that you shouldn't be polite. Or at least mostly polite.

Clearly Yen Press listened. But I wonder if it's enough that if they ever go back to do a second printing of Volume One if they'd swap the graphics. But I'm not really familiar with how big the print runs on these sorts of things are, nor their ratio to the anticipated demand.

Thank you Yen. I can still understand the need for a westernized cover but I personalty favor the originals.

Ya I saw a couple months ago on the Chapters/Indigo listing for volume 2 (and 3 as well) that the image was the original art. The slip cover is new though.

They took it down fairly soon after putting the listing up though so I was curious to see if that was really going to be it. Nice to see it confirmed, although I didn't mind the other cover to much. It's not my thing but I cared more about the text than the cover.

This is great news though. I'm currently reading the first novel and loving every page of it. Glad to hear Yen Press heard the "howling" of their fans. :-)

This is what they should have done the first time.  Strange that they didn't.
And just as an extra note, that "new" cover is WAY better than the one they put together for the first volume.

I liked how they offered a jacket sleeve to the first volume......eventually. It's odd how this will be reversed now.

The original's cover change was kind of confusing. It was as if they were worried about some kind of stigma of being compared to an anime due to the cover having an anime-esque theme.

The fact that they have to now add two different covers shows one of the problems with over localization of a product. It just creates two different audiences that need to be to be placated when only one cover is needed. Still, it's only the cover. It's when you change the content on the inside that it too far.

IIRC, the ANN article said that the original cover difference was to placate the requests of their retail partners. I can see why their partners would want to widen the base, even though the novel is usually found smack dab in the middle of the manga section anyways. -_-;;

But this is awesome~ The new photo jacket actually looks much better than the first volume's and the actual cover is <3

@Whiskeyjack:
Hmm. Its questionable. Like, we obviously don't see any of the background business, but depending on sales and initial print size, they might not need/be interested in even doing a reprint. And if they did, I... well, I just don't think they'd feel it'd be worth the trouble... unless of course they thought it would get our attention and move more copies.

no joke... there was a reason fans were in a an uproar.

I wonder if they'll release the first volume again. I didn't buy it because of the cover (yes I do judge books by its covers...) but I wanted to own the official released light novel. If they do, I'll snatch both.

Wouldn't laying down lit torches be a bad thing?
