Spice and Wolf Light Novels Get Original Cover Back

Well, sorta.

 The original cover
 The original cover

Spice and Wolf, the touching story that mixes feudal economies and a brilliant wolf god, has an interesting history in the US. While my description sounds strange, if you're in the mood for something touching, slice of life-y, and short... this is a wonderful story.

Apparently FUNimation and Yen Press agree with me, as they are bringing over the light novels and anime. Yen Press, you might remember, attached what some have called a "silly" book cover, instead of the original one. It seems that they heard our complaints, and have decided to include the original cover as a promotional dust jacket to website retailers at no additional charge. The cover will slip over the previous one, and everyone wins, right?

Now, I honestly didn't have that huge a problem with the new cover, it was very New York Bestsellers list, but if I had a choice... I'm going to take the original. What say ye consumers?

At least when YEN Press discovers they screw up they do "something". Unlike other companies that once they have dug themselves into a hole they keep going.....VIZ (may they crash and burn into the seas).

That's good.  The new cover just sucks.  Glad to see the original one is being used.

To be honest, I think the 'new' one they made was very well altered to appeal to typical general book worm audiences, and the fact that they released a version that kept the original cover SHOULD have appeased the fans...

The fact that it didn't and it came to this just tempts me to think of this as another example of how fans tend to be whiny little turds who insist on having everything their way or else, though at the same time, the 'new' cover does seem pretty ugly to me, as much as it does seem like a typical New York Bestseller cover.

Props to Yen Press on being able to work the crowd as conditions shifted though.

@HeeroYuy:

To be fair to the "whiny little turds," the cover Yen had included with the magazine was folded in thirds, like a letter or poster (I guess Yen didn't explain the situation to the printer), so those were useless as dust jackets.

That said, Yen has done everything they reasonably could.  True Spice and Wolf fans now ought to be praying that Yen's gambit worked, and that the book does reasonably well in mainstream bookstores.  Otherwise, they're not going to see any more light novels.  It's not a financially viable niche unless more mainstream readers come on board.
