Special Review: Bleach: The Diamond Dust Rebellion

A soul reaper with a boa?

I'm talking about that guy on the right.
I'm talking about that guy on the right.

Well, this was less accessible than MEMORIES OF NOBODY, but I’m not really going to fault it for that. This is the second movie for a series that’s been running for, what? 13 seasons? I’d feel gypped if I were a long-time viewer and this movie was simplistic enough for anybody to just dive into it. That being said, as was the case with MEMORIES OF NOBODY, there was enough of an emotional thread I could latch onto, even when I felt like I was missing out on a lot of good complexity. The whole theme about excessive individualism being a weakness in itself is actually a surprisingly-applicable one. Something I’ve seen play out in real life a few times, actually.

I was a bit surprised to see Ichigo take on a lesser role here. His presence in it is certainly smaller here than it was in the first movie. And who gets the spotlight, instead? The white-haired badass I called out last time - - Captain Hitsugaya! I wasn’t always able to wade through the greater political intrigue of the Soul Society and all their different divisions, but I could definitely get behind this guy’s conflicted feelings about the big bad. Why exactly were they forced to fight in the first place? I’m still confused about that. What’s that thing that only one Soul Reaper at a time has a right to? Educate me, BLEACH devotes!

The more I watch these shows, the savvier I get, I feel, about the expectations and criticisms of this genre. The climax of this, where they’re ascending that spontaneously-manifested crystal mountain certainly felt like they advancing through levels in a video game.  They even had a fight with the end boss! I was half-expecting there to be +XP counters popping up every time they took a bad guy out.

One criticism is the sometimes-confounding leaps in style and practically. Sure, a lot of the weapons might’ve look too cumbersome for anybody to actually wield but, seriously, what was up with the guy with the pink boa? His skeletal dragon even had a matching one!

Hitsugaya's zanpakutou situation seems to be quite unusual within Soul Society, in that he seems to wield a different soul rather than his own (as does that "friend" of his) and he is forced to fight for the right to continue partnering with that soul. It still isn't particularly clear, and its made more complicated, perhaps even non-canon, by Ichigo's dad appearing to have the same zanpakutou as him.

As for the "boa", Kubo enjoys flaunting his sense of style, and it isn't one that everyone necessarily agrees with :P Along with Bankai often comes a new fashion flair for the user. Ichigo dons a whole new costume, Hitsugaya gains ice wings, and Ikkaku loses his shirt all together. Seriously, Kubo would be one of the more interesting fashion designers in the world had he chosen that route. Note I didn't say "good", "bad", or "successful".

As for the "end boss feel", get used to it. It's a common occurrence in long-running manga adaption movies. Its often the main character and his buddies versus the new big bad guy and his cronies. Look at the first Bleach movie, or any of the Inuyasha films (which I am embarrassed admitting to having seen). And to be honest, for what is typically an hour-thirty run time, it works. It's not the most artistically sound strategy, but it does what it needs to do. These movies aren't meant for the academy awards (though I felt like Memories of Nobody broke the mold a little bit, even with the formula), in fact, they are meant to be little more than fanfic trailers for the full series, so the tower of terror method maximizes the action for the fans.

Question: Now that you have seen two movies, who from the recurring cast stands out to you? as an insider looking out, I assume that Hitsugaya has already drawn your eye, but who else? Are you more Kenpachi or Byakuya? Yoruichi or Soi Fon?

I never saw this movie. I had meant to get around to it, but eventually reached the level of not really caring about the series at all. Since it's a VIZ title, If I did want to watch it. I would only use fansubs for this.

@AgentJ: No, it's a canon rule that if two people share the same Zanpakuto spirit they have to fight for it. Ichigo and his father have similar swords but they are not the same.

We know that for sure? Because he did clearly say "Heaven Shocking Lunar Fang!" er, I mean, "Getsuga Tensho!" and I don't remember seeing or hearing the name of his sword.

@AgentJ:  I don't know any names, but the Fox reaper and the weird... mime/kabuki guy stuck out to me the most.

Bleach is dumb.  It eventually reached a point where I kept reading just to see a new sword get unleashed, with the conclusion of the fight being often anti-climatic.  It has a truly cool and unique style to illustrate of what the term "badass" means in ghost land, but it seems like have an endless supply of stupid ways to make dudes stronger for the sake of their next Deus Ex Machina plot device.  Seriously I've never seen another series with so many goddamn scenes of characters being revealed suddenly to change the tide of battle.  Heroics are fine but this series takes it to another level.  This kind of storytelling just does not interest me.

This is coming from someone with who reads the books and who has seen a hand full of cringe worthy episodes throughout the show.  Add some ill-conceived filler that provides extra characters who literally butt in on some of the original, more dramatic twists, to the aforementioned poor pacing and it becomes a show that I deem unwatchable.

Diamond Dust Rebellion has what is probably one of my favorite Kenpachi Zaraki moments ever, which also convinced me that despite all his violent posturing, he's still a little kid inside (hence Yachiru). Specifically...

The Gotei 13 (Minus Zaraki): Alright, here's the plan, we're going to...
Kenpachi Zaraki: OMG a giant Enemy to fight! :-D Leeroy Jenkins!
*Slash*
Kenpachi Zaraki: That's it? :-( Sadness.
*Boss Regnereates*
Kenpachi Zaraki: OMG, you regenerate! That is the coolest thing ever. We're going to have so much fun together!

In all seriousness, Kenpachi Zaraki is like a male LuFisto.

Dig Deeper into Bleach: The Diamond Dust Rebellion

The 2nd Bleach movie. A valuable artifact known as the Kings Seal was stolen while Hitsugaya was transporting it. The Ohter captains believe Hitsugaya stole it and order his execution. But he is really going after the thief who turns out to be a ghost from his past.
