So, we're going to have a full review up by Thursdayu, but it felt like something needed to bridge the gap between the chibi review and that. So, considering that Soul Eater is very character centric work, I thought a small introduction to the main ensemble might suffice. Without further ado, the "Characters" of Soul Eater:
Maka Albarn and Soul Eater Evans
Weapon Type: Scythe
Maka is an overachiever. The daughter of Shinigami's
personal weapon, Death Scythe (Spirit).
Maka seemingly despises her womanizing father. Like her mother before her, Maka is a Scythe expert. We haven't seen Maka's mother, though the sheer reference of her is enough to turn her father into a pile of quibbling tears. Additionally, Maka possesses the ability perceive soul types, a relatively rare power.
Soul is a cool dude wanna be. Entirely focused on living up to being a good man, he constantly references which actions are uncool, or unlike the character he wants to become. Though he argues with Maka, their performance under pressure and hard working nature make them a good team.
Black Star and Tsubaki
Meister: Black Star
Weapon Type: Multiple Shapes [sword, kunai, shuriken]
Black Star is an idiot savant. Bent on proving how he will one day ascend to godhood, Black Star has quite the ego. This ego actually makes him get along Soul incredibly well (they appreciate their mutual effort to be cool.) Beyond this, however, lies an incredibly gifted student. Despite this, he backs up his mouth with a devotion to his training. While attempting to study, he punished himself with 1,000 push ups for every missed question. In the end he was no stronger, yet he had done an inhuman workout routine.
Tsubaki is a pushover, but not necessarily in a bad way. Descendant of a rather infamous line of "weapons," Tsubaki
counters Black Stars ego with kindness. Her endless font of faith and forgiveness supports Black Star more than he knows. Also, her innate ability to match anyone's soul frequency allows her to work with anyone. This is great for Black Star, who seemingly is oblivious to the what teamwork is.
Death the Kid, Liz, and Patty Thompson
Meister: Death the Kid
Weapon(s): Liz and Patty Thompson
Weapons: 2 Hand Guns
Death the Kid is neurotic. The incredibly, incredibly powerful son of Shinigami-san. While some case show weapons powerful enough to not need a meisters , he has been shown to be the only meister capable of wielding two weapons effectively. He's easily the most powerful of the three teams, though his crippling OCD behavior gets the better of him. Anything out of place will either set him into a brutal rage, or cause him to over obsess, and lose all ability to continue combat. He prides himself on great symmetry, even though three white stripes in his hair only naturally occur on one side. Also, he fires his hand guns upside down, triggered with his pinkies... I have no idea why.
Liz and Patty are non-identical twins. This often leads to arguments with Kid, though its obvious that all three hold great respect for each other. Liz and Patty actually started life as "The Thompson Twins," criminals. Death was so inspired by their story and potential for symmetry that he took them in, an act of kindness they haven't forgotten. Kid's crippling attacks of OCD are pretty bad, but they've proven that, in a pinch, they can wield each other as weapons.
Shinigami, Frank N. Stein, and Death Scythe
meisters : Shinigami
or Frank N. Stein
Weapon: Death Scythe
Weapon Type: Scythe
Shinigami-sama is the founder of Death City. One of the first weapon meisters, Shinigami-sama is supposedly of an almost godly level of power. Though, these days he seems to prefer his life of solitude. Living inside some sort of magic mirror universe, he keeps a rather jovial face, and enjoys helping raise the next generation of defenders. He's also a very loving father.
Death Scythe, also know as Spirit, is Maka's father, and one of the rare "Death Scythe" level weapons. He has had a history of different meisters. First, his ex-wife (Maka's mother), then Frank N. Stein, and eventually he became the personal weapon of Death Scythe.
Frank N. Stein is an ex-reaper. Distancing himself for Death City and its needs to focus on his research. One common word associated with Stein is sadistic. Death Scythe painfully remembers being experimented on constantly, and begins the series with not so fond memories of his ex-partner.
Expect the full review of Part 1 Thursday, but feel free to check out the chibi-review
of the first 3 episodes first.
