So What Did JOJO'S BIZARRE ADVENTURE #9 Rip Off?

#9 -- Watch & Learn. Who here has read DRACULA?

OK, OK, OK… nitpicky question, but why wasn’t Jojo able to use his Ripple power when the entire deck of that ship is being pumped with hot steam from the engines? Doesn’t he get his power from air? And isn't Dio vulnerable to fire and warmth?

It’s a dumb question to ask, I know. This is an episode, after all, that opens with Mr. Speedwagon not realizing that Jojo and his bride were leaving to America until he read it in a newspaper article at the very moment they were setting sail. This is a show that throws logic over its shoulder.

Still… they make such a big deal about the Ripple’s qualities. It’s hard not to call out the inconsistencies when they arise.

Anyway, I’ve blown a lot of hot air about what JOJO has inspired, but it’s always funny to realize where the show itself is drawing its inspirations from. Much like how FIST OF THE NORTH STAR was obviously the end product of swapping Bruce Lee into MAD MAX, JOJO clearly seems to have been borne of Araki thinking that DRACULA would’ve been a hell of a lot better if Kenshiro played Jonathan Harker.

Given the timing, he was probably watching the Christopher Lee or Frank Langella movies. I can picture him squirming around, getting impatient during all the scenes of Renfield shipping the Count’s coffin across the Black Sea, wonder why there weren’t any kung fu fighting zombies on the ship.

And I won’t deny it - - Dio makes far more outrageous vampire than any Dracula I’ve seen. Here we are, only nine episodes in, and it feels like we’ve come to summit of this epic dynastic blood feud.

Watch "The Final Ripple" and decide for yourself, then read my comments about the previous episode.

Jonathan needs to breathe properly to produce Ripple energy. Hard to breathe when you've got 2 holes blown in your neck. But then again, he still managed to burn the last bit of it, and managed to talk to Erina.

No comment on the fact the series actually killed off its main character? Kind of makes it stand out, especially against other Shonen Jump series.

But now you get to move on to episode 10, which starts the next Part, and the glory of one of the best protagonists in anime/manga.

Dio's not weak to fire as much as it's just handy since it destroys things in general quickly and constantly, making it hard to regenerate. Heat doesn't really have an effect though, it's just fire, and I wouldn't even call that a weakness. Hamon/Ripple is the only weakness and that's because it has the same wavelength as sunlight, not because it's hot.

And yeah, it's not air that gives Jonathan power so much as he needs it to channel power. It doesn't matter what kind of air or how much as long as he can breath at all without restriction.

@rubberluffy: I think it loses a bit of it's impact since the whole series is built more on the bloodline than any single protagonist. Though at the time I bet it was pretty original before the series made that clear.

I was shocked that they killed off a main character.

There was one inconsistency if you get into Stardust Crusaders. I thought there was one coffin that Dio's Chinese servant brought. Erina use that coffin to escape the explosion with the baby she saved. Plus, she's supposedly pregnant with Jojo's child.

@YotaruVegeta:@rubberluffy:

I can name a lot of Shonen Jump titles that kill off the main character, they just don't stay dead LOL!

Yeah, it's kinda handwaved but not really. But this is literally what you deal with when enjoying JoJo. Araki either forgets, ignores or straight retcons things all the time. There's a character in part 6 who switches genders in between their first and second appearance, just because Araki changed his mind. You'll see "Because Araki" as the answer to a LOT of questions if you ever check any JoJo forums/threads.

Yeah, that one plot hole is startling, and I don't think there's any possible counter reasoning with that. Araki can get away with it, though simply cuz he's Araki and he's composing this great arc.

It's the breathing, Tom, not the air. Ripple is such a great idea for a power because it's weakness could easily come up rather than be forced - for example: kryptonite and Superman.

Killing off the character was bold to. Regardless of the inconsistencies in the plot, if it's enjoyable while I am watching it then it is enjoyable.
