Silly Anime Titles! -- THE VICE PIT

We love anime but, let's be honest, a lot of shows' titles are needlessly complicated. Tom & Sam finally let loose a rant about excessive punctuation, silly pronunciation and the perils of too many sub-titles.

I didn't think this was going to be a big issue. But as for translation of title can be a problem when the end result sounds very off. I usually don't have problems with ways certain title are pronounce. If we really need to complain about anime titles it the ones that are overly long like Ore no Imōto ga Konna ni Kawaii Wake ga Nai (my little sister can't be this cute) and I only remember that because every makes fun of it.

Aaaaahhh the wobbly effect on the end card is freaking me out!

I ended up writing a long post so I'll split it into sections.

Pronunciation

Okay, here are the rules of thumb I go by:

  1. If it's a Japanese title, use the Japanese pronunciation
-- Kind of goes without saying
  2. If it's a translated/transliterated title, use the English/American/etc. pronunciation
-- It's "Dragon Ball Z" not "Doragon Bōru Zetto" and "Highschool of the Dead" not "Haisukūru obu za Deddo"

Beyond that it's kind of up in the air, that's why people argue about it.

The "x" is Silent?

From what I understand it's not actually the letter "x" it just looks like it. It's not "Hunter x Hunter" it's "Hunter × Hunter" (you should be able to see the difference) the × symbol is more like punctuation or decoration. It sometimes looks like it's being used in place of "V.S." or "V." but not always.

Title Using Japanese KanjiTitle Using English AlphabetJapanese PronunciationEnglish Pronunciation
ハンター×ハンターHunter × HunterHantā HantāHunter Hunter
ハイスクールD×DHigh School DxDHaisukūru Dī DīHigh School D D
ガン × ソードGUN×SWORDGan SōdoGun Sword

Admittedly I was saying "High School DxD" for a long time until I heard a Japanese person say "Haisukūru Dī Dī" and it got me curious enough to look this stuff up, so I completely understand the confusion around it. What we SHOULD do is take the × symbol out when the anime is released in English, that would probably help.

There are times when an actual X is used like in "Street Fighter X Tekken" where the "X" is pronounced "cross" which further complicates things, but I don't think this happens often.

Long-ass Names!

As for the ridiculously long names, I've always found them funny and oddly charming.

I think Crunchyroll usually handles it pretty well. They tend to use a shortened name, like "Oreimo" for "Ore no Imōto ga Konna ni Kawaii Wake ga Nai" (My Little Sister Can't Be This Cute) or "Yu-Sibu" for the ridiculously long "Yūsha ni Narenakatta Ore wa Shibushibu Shūshoku o Ketsui Shimashita." (I Couldn’t Become a Hero, So I Reluctantly Decided to Get a Job.)

@Daniel_Newton:

One exception:

Crunchyroll didn't use Nokome or Noucome for this series: My Mental Choices are Completely Interfering with my School Romantic Comedy.

For me a simple title is often preferred,

Folks have punctuation fetish. I don't know what kind of grammar fetish I have. Man-Ga and Man-GEH and other stuff are based on personal preferences. It's hard to tell folks to tell them to pronounce the other way because it's imprinted in them. It feels natural for them. I still pronounce it Ma-JI instead Ma-GEE. FUNimation translate Binbougami ga to Good Luck Girl! instead of poverty god. It's because the series revolve around Ichiko instead of Momiji, our poverty god. I guess it make sense, but it lost its charm. As for Kore wa Zombie Desu ka? to Is this a Zombie?, it's appropriate and the translation fits. Though, they use Magical Garment girls in the translation instead of Magical Girls (Masou Shojo). Translation of recent anime titles that were streamed from Japan must be marketable for audiences who will watch them in dub, and it should fit the anime series.

Long titles like My Mental Choices are Completely Interfering with my School Romantic Comedy (Nokome or NouCome) should be shorten to something sweet and easy to remember.
