To sum it up in one word, NO!
Choice of viewing service/medium did cross my mind. Most of the anime I stream online has been thru Hulu, partly because it's free, and partly because the amount of subbed Anime available. The notion of censorship hadn't crossed my mind until I began checking out episodes of High School of the Dead and Deadman Wonderland, where scenes of violence were darkened in order to hide/muddy what was going on. It was most distracting in Deadman Wonderland because there were segments, for minutes at a time, the video screen would be barely visible. Using a different streaming service, I rewatched those same episodes and saw what I had missed.
There is even still some censorship in anime shown on Japanese TV. Fanservice shows often make use of rays of light to cover up things, I think Blood C had a ton of edits to the point that people said the TV version was like a parody. These are normally removed in blu-ray/DVD releases of the series.
Like you guys said we don't need to necessarily wait for shows to air on TV or released on DVD before we can watch them so I don't mind censorship when it does finally air on TV.
I don't like when it's obvious action sequences have been trimmed out though. It's really disorienting and messes up the pace. Not anime but the version of Commando (Awesome movie) I have suffers from a lot of cutaways and trims to the action sequences. It just looks bad.
short answer. No.
Well the whole One Piece 4KIDS Doboccle fits in nicely with this discussion....but maybe we are all tired with that particular example
No
Oh yeah! Thanks to Tom and Sam for addressing my topic!!
I'm going to be bit wishy washy here, but I'm against censorship of Japanese culture, drugs, and violence. Examples include replacing riceballs with sandwiches in Pokemon, changing folk's Japanese names into English, and erasing kanji.
Some Americans are very culturally sensitive, and censorship against like black face and the Swastika which was intended to be used as a sacred symbol of auspiciousness in Buddhism. Censorship will protect companies from getting off the wrong foot when people misunderstand their intentions.
There could be a censored version, yeah.
wow!, some one please send that uncut version of Samurai Pizza Cats' over here ASAP!
I mean come'on she had a freak'in bottle of sake!, Kawaii!.....
I don't want my anime censored...
No, no censoring, for crying out loud. We've gotten our share with 4Kids crap, and we don't need more of these.
No Censorship please, i'm tired of seeing black and grey blood or deleted scenes :(
