Set Your DVRs: DragonBall Z Kai Makes its TV Premiere Tonight

Nicktoons scheduled to air the Dragon Ball Z remaster at 8PM EDT

If reader response to GodLen's recent editorial about continuing the Dragon Ball saga is any indication to how the community as a whole would react to yet more adventures of Goku and crew racking up healthy bad guy body counts then I have some good news and bad news. The bad news (if you're among those wishing well enough to be left alone, that is) is that Dragon Ball Z Kai will be premiering on Nicktoons tonight at 8PM EDT. The good news, though, is that technically it's not a "new" Dragon Ball Z series since Kai is actually more of a remastering of the original series that celebrated its twenty-year anniversary last year.

Twenty years...for humans we're still healthy as a spring chicken by then, but for media two decades means the title is either on its way to becoming a classic or a forgotten relic. Thankfully Dragon Ball Z is firmly in the the former category and a worthy recipient of this bit of tasteful cosmetic surgery. Kai premiered early last year in Japan to positive fan reaction, being among the top ten anime each week it was broadcast and helping a new generation dive into the franchise that's made such an enormous impact on Japanese pop culture. To create Kai Toei performed an extensive reedit of Dragon Ball Z complete with an updated opening and closing theme, rerecording of the script, altered episode pacing (thank you for this, Toei!) and remastered the whole thing in glorious HD. That's a lot of work for Toei to put into such an aged title, no matter how much of a cash cow it's been, but fans of the original series should be excited if for nothing else than to see the recut episodes that more closely follow original series creator Akira Toriyama's version of events in the manga. Whatever the case, tune in tonight to see what all the scuttlebutt's about.

Is it me or is it really weird that they released it out on Blu-Ray and DVD before it started on TV.

I have nothing else to do tonight so why not? I wonder if I get Nick in HD here...wait...no I don't because I have cable here (unlike at home where I do have a DVR).

Nice

@Rover: Honestly, that never sat well with me either. I feel like they didn't want to give viewers the chance to form an opinion one way or the other, rather they shoved it out onto the market and let fans' faith in the beloved franchise take their money where it will.

Yay? Not like I really care but at least for people who haven't seen it will have the chance to.

@TheSweetHartKid08: Yeah, HD remastering can really clean an image up. It reminds of back when the home video standard changed from VHS to DVD. Massive picture upgrade.
