Sentai Filmworks Loves Dubbing- Releasing Clannad, FotNS...

Say what now?

  domo arigato Sentai!
  domo arigato Sentai!
For whatever reason, I just imagine that the Sentai Filmworks' production offices look like the rebel hideout. With their fast, sub-only releases of many series, it often feels like they are smuggling the shows out of Japan. Of course, we profit, since several of them probably weren't big enough for a dub (Special A) or are just too much of a nightmare to localize (Maria+Holic). Not only have they put out some of my favorite releases this last year, but their announcements are usually on shelf's with a month or two, keeping my ADD at an all time high.

This, of course, is made possible by the more minimal expenses/production time, associated with simple, feature-less sub-only releases. Well, Sentai Filmworks just announced that the dubs are back. In a limited program aimed at polishing up some of their larger releases, Sentai has announced the following five titles will receive an English Dub.

But wait? What if I already own those DVDS?

Don't qq yet, you haven't been forsaken. The people over at Section23 (the parent company) have stated that they are looking into some sort of "Upgrade" where you'll be able to trade out and get the newer release, with the dub included. No news on how, as I'm sure they're still mulling it over themselves. But hey, I'm just tickled pink that they remember that we exist.

Oh well, who am I kidding, Fist of the North star is like, 900x better with over dramatic English dubs. Sign me up now.

I'm up for an upgrade program for Clannad since I got the subbed dvds. I wish they'd announce blu-ray too...

I am so glad I watched Clannad subbed, I bet it will just be ruined with english voices... ugh.

I think you mean sub only releases, here.

Anyway, I think I've mentioned before, that the inclusion of a dub isn't going to make me want to buy a series more or less than I would otherwise.  Basically, it doesn't affect my decision at all.  So, the news doesn't mean much to me.  However!  It's really awesome that they're planning some sort of upgrade program for people who bought into these series early.  WTG Sentai Filmworks!  That's how you treat customers.

I'm glad to see this.

Sounds good.  I was beginning to worry, it seemed like only two US anime companies were going to be doing dubs from now on.  I hope this is a portent of a bit if a turnaround, before this, the only Sentai releases with dubs were "rescues", shows that were already released before by another company and was already dubbed.  I enjoy anime and I do watch subs, my watching habits aren't always conducive to subs, particularly when I'm building models while I try to watch.   I'll probably trade up Blue Drop some way or another, sell it privately or maybe trade it up.  I don't think I've even opened Tears to Tiara or the first Clannad set, so I can probably resell it at a better price than whatever the trade-in offer might be.

I want to know if they'll dub Skull Man, and if so, would they include the live-action prologue and original opening missing from the initial release. I'd upgrade the heck out of my collection for those (don't care as much for a dub).

WOOOO!!!! I finally have a decent reason for me to actually legitimately buy Clannad! For the first time since they changed their name, I congratulate you Sentai Filmworks.

ugh dont they bloody dare plague clannad, one of the best animes around with shitty dubs, eww

If the trade-ins are free, it gives me a reason to see how Blue Drop sounds in English. If not, well, I'll be holding onto my sub-only DVD.

This is awesome news, hopefully Sentai will go back and eventually English Dub most of their other licenses :).

never looked at Clannad before but I can't wait!   copy and paste cast from Kanon?
Netstrykeon March 16, 2010 at 7:44 p.m.
Well......I guess I don't have an excuse anymore. I'm buying Clannad this weekend and trade up, baby.
I hope the other people who we're whining and complaining about not getting Clannad dubbed will follow my lead (To-LOVE-Ru amongst others gets dubbed in the future if the demand is there )

That is quite possible, since ADV did the dub on Kanon.

Well, we don't have details on the program yet, it might not be "entirely" free. It could be though, the MSRP on their box sets were pretty high for sub only was a little high, maybe that extra money is being shunted back.

I love this anime so much, hopefully it will be as good as the Kanon dub, and hopefully they'll dub After Story too!!
